But even then the Freespace Open Installer often fails to download the MediaVP_2014 files. Are there STILL problems with the Installer?

It seems so. We need to get to the bottom of this.

A friend of mine tried it himself, and it worked for him - However he used his original FS2 CD's, I use the GOG.com installer. That might be a hint.

I have three questions for Regeaj...
1) What directory do you select on the first page of the FSO Installer?
2) What directory did you install GOG FreeSpace 2 to?
3) Can you upload a zip of the logs folder generated by the installer? (It should be in the same folder as the installer jar.)

If you needed to rerun installation for installed mods to get the executable to show up, that hints towards an already-existing properties file listing the executables as already having been installed; did you perhaps make an abortive installation attempt first, possibly to a different folder?

Based on the information in the logs, and on a new understanding of an old bug, this appears to be caused by a combination of impatience and pushing the Cancel button over and over.
The Installer can only download so many files at once. When the MediaVPs entries display "Waiting..." for minutes on end, it doesn't mean they can't be downloaded. It means that the Installer is waiting for other files to finish downloading first. If you hit Cancel and then restart the Installer, it will have to restart the downloads of all files it wasn't able to download last time.
The old bug (which I was finally able to squash this weekend) was in the failure of the Installer to properly cancel some downloads in some circumstances. A side effect of this bug was that it caused cancelled downloads to be reported as failed. That would result in status messages on the last page.
The next release of the Installer should fix the cancellation issue. The impatience issue is something you'll have to solve yourself. :p
