So, I've just installed FreeSpace Open 3.7.4 RC 1 SSE 2 on my new pc. And I have a problem.
When starting the game, it goes to a black screen, with lowered resolution. The intro does not play and sometimes I get menu sounds but nothing else. Running on Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit. Retail works flawlessly.
Can someone please help me out here?
-
Please post your fs2_open.log file. Instructions on how to do this can be found in this post.
-
It doesn't want to generate the log, I've tried everything from the linked thread.
-
What exactly happens when you try to start the debug executable?
-
Same as with the regular one, it goes to a black screen, doesn't play the intro, and I can hear the menu sounds sometimes.
-
And you're really sure that there's no log being written? Please check both possible locations (there's a guide in the FAQ)
-
I have checked all possible locations multiple times, there are no logs anywhere.
-
Please set the game's resolution to something smaller than your screen resolution and try running it in a window. In addition, please set the -debug_window commandline flag, then try running the game again.
-
I have checked all possible locations multiple times, there are no logs anywhere.
Install Everything (https://www.voidtools.com/). Open it up, let it index your drive (takes maybe 10 seconds), then type in fs2_open.log and you will see wherever it is, if it exists on your drive. If you have multiple drives, be sure Everything is configured to search the drive freespace is in as well as the system drive.

All that did is change the screen from black to white.

That did it, strangely, it was in a random place on my drive, it's attached.

This is a massive problem. This tells me that the game is using the graphics chip of your motherboard, which is doesn't offer many of the features FSO requires. Do you have a dedicated GPU in the system?
-
I've got the Intel G33 Express Chipset family, it is better than the one I had in my old pc that ran FSO somewhat properly.
-
Yes, but it is still a 7 year old chipset that was made during a time where Intel didn't actually care about game-capable drivers. Literally any GPU, even a used 50 USD one off of ebay made by AMD or nvidia beats it handily.
-
Try "Disable GLSL (shader) support" in launcher. Maybe it'll help.

Did nothing unfortunately.

Well, I paid the whole PC 55 euros, and it took me several years just to collect that money, so there's no way I can get any upgrade at all.
-
:(
Try software mode? It's drastic, but who knows!
Edit: Also make sure everything shiny is disabled.
Way to go Intel.....
-
Even on FS2 default settings it does not work.
-
Try software mode?
Hasn't worked for years; the command-line option is planned to be removed.

Do you have an expansion slot open? What kind (AGP, PCI, PCI-E)? What's your system specs and what PSU is it using?

Strange, I remember having to use it a year or two back. Is this confirmed?
-
Yes, it absolutely is. There's noone on the team willing to support it, and even if there was, its usefulness is strictly limited. wardog here is the only person out of the FSO userbase that actually meets the conditions (as in, absolutely zero budget for anything that could qualify as a gaming PC). That makes it an eminently cuttable feature, and given that it's likely broken by now, cutting it is the logical choice.

No expansion slots open, PCI, Intel 2 Duo E4500 2.2GHz.
-
I meant confirmed that it was broken, not whether it was being cut.

It takes less than a minute to confirm it. I haven't done an exhaustive check to see which version it broke in, but it definitely hasn't worked since I joined the SCP. You get the HUD (not terribly surprising that 2D drawing works fine), but behind the HUD you just get a black screen.
If somebody wanted to do an exhaustive binary search to find the exact commit that broke it, it might possibly lead to the feature being restored. Otherwise, nobody has the time or inclination to work on it.

Nuts.

Would a GMA 4500 run FSO?

Do you have any expansion slots at all, occupied or not? If so, what cards are plugged into them? And are you actually using all those cards?
