So I wanted to try my hand at making a videogame. I spent the last couple of weeks hunkered down learning Game Maker Studio and here is what came of it. It's a basic Freespace 2 themed side scrolling shooter with the majority of visual and audio assets adapted and edited from Freespace 2 and FSU MediaVPs. It's a proof of concept level with some of the mechanics/features I'd like to further develop.
If I end up continuing this, I'd hope to include more objective oriented gameplay, more dynamic AI, weapons, advanced targeting, wingman commands, RPG elements, etc.
You can download and play it on Windows here. (default resolution is 1920x1080)

Or, watch my playthrough.

Please let me know if there are any bugs!

Works good

Awesome! This is really good looking! If you choose to take this further, we would love to see what you come up with next.

looks cool, any chance of exporting a Linux version from Game Maker: Studio?

In the future, if I decide to invest in the pro-version of GMS, it can do multiplatform export. It's a drop in the bucket in terms of dev costs, but still a bit much for me as a hobby right now.

ah right, didn't realise that was a pro option only, c'est la vie

Awesome. No detectable bugs. Moar! :)
Gets REALLY hectic the further you get. I was really feeling overwhelmed toward the end. Still, the GTVA forces arriving at the end was a real "aw yeah" moment.
One thing: it's a bit hard to line up your shots exactly when a Shivan fighter is rushing toward you. Maybe have a button that, when held, switches between fast movement and slower/more precise movement?

That's pretty cool. I didn't know command had that many lines for the Rampart.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, level/difficulty design is something I'm not so familiar with. Have to look into practices for making things challenging without being hard for hard's sake.

The Rampart was secretly the real star of FS2

Seconded.
And holy crap this is awesome. I could not take my eyes off the play through. All 12 some minutes of it.
Great work man, we want more!

Highlight worthy.
