Title: OT - That that that....
Post by: Sandwich on August 05, 2002, 08:10:43 am
Brain teaser! Give me a grammatically correct sentence using the word "that" as many times in a row as you can!

Be sure to put your entries in black text so you don't spoil it for anyone else!

Nope! No comas, and no commas, either. ;) But close... :)

It should be easy for you, Venom - after all, you've mastered the "poum poum poum"... :p

One day there was a man, he had a stutter. He was walking down the road and saw a UFO - he pointed at the remarkable craft and said: "that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- that- looks just like a huge pecker!". The End.

Runs...

Is it even possible to put more than 2 'that's next to each other?

meh

Easy to make a sentence with 2 in a row, but with 3 I can't think of anything.

Hmmm... someone serious! :)

Yes, it's possible to have a COMPLETE SENTENCE with a decent number of 'that's - above 3. :)

I can think of one with two but not three:

The statement x=y implies that that which equals x also equals y.
Title: OT - That that that....
Post by: DragonClaw on August 05, 2002, 10:52:07 am
w00t I'm the first to figure it out(with 3, any more requires commas)

Its just that that that, and that are different

Of course this is using the old english type grammar, the 'new' requires commas with any more than 2 objects... so it would be "Its just that that, that, and that are different"

meh, this isn't right though is it?
Title: OT - That that that....
Post by: CP5670 on August 05, 2002, 10:54:29 am
I thought of one with three, but it has a comma...ah well, I'm getting close:

The last statement implies, in addition to that, that that which equals 2x also equals 2y.

Ok, to summarize: full, gramatically correct sentence - in English - with the word "that" repeating consecutively (one after the other with no other words in between) as many times as possible. :)

Zeronet: How the heck is "That: that: that:..." etc etc correct English and a full sentence?

That instructions comment was aimed at Vadar, btw.

So far, CP's in the lead, with 2 whole "that"s repeating with no commas or words in between! :)

That car is very comfortable.

Fool! That that that you said shouldn't be a that! You should say this instead of that, because we are inside the car.

But then again, I'm no native speaker, I'm probably wrong.

OK even if it isn't 100% viable (need ' at the start and end of the italicised 'that') I think you should get kudos for imagination.

Ever notice if you look at the same word a lot of times, in this case "that", that that cuases you to think it looks strange and to begin to question if that is the corret spelling for "that".

Ok, I posted that last sentence really fast because I was in a hurry not to be beaten! (I actually got back up after going to bed because I thought of this while I was falling asleep!)

I mean it like this:

I said that that that that that other guy said shouldn't be a that, but a this instead.

The only difference is that I'm talking about 'that other guy' instead of 'the other guy', so that adds one extra 'that', to a total of five 'that's'!

I actually started wondering if I hadn't misspelled it, because it seemed like 'hat' with a T before it. Strange feeling, even if you know it's correct it just looks wrong.

Ok, now I can go back to sleep again.

It's possible, and it makes a sense if you take into account that you've already referred to an object/thing called/named 'that' once, so you can do it again. :)

I might have a sentence with more thats, but I'm way too much beyond confused to be sure if it's correct or not.

[COLOR-black]I said that that that that that that that that guy said was referring to shouldn't be a that, but a this instead.[/COLOR]

It obviously needs some explanation, so I'll try my best to explain it. For that, we'll need to take a look at the whole dialogue, while numbering the important thats to keep track of where they are in the other sentences.

Guy inside the car: That(1) car is very comfortable.
Other Guy: Hmm,  that(2) that(1) that you said sounded funny. Do you have an accent?

By this dialogue, we can understand that:
- That(2) was referring to that(1).
- That(2) was said by that(3) other guy.
- That(1) shouldn't be a that, but a this instead.

Putting together, it starts to get confusing:

- The that(1) that the that(2) the guy said was referring to shouldn't be a that.

It continues:

Me: That that(1) that that that(2) that that(3) other guy said was referring to shouldn't be a that, but a this instead.
Me, later: I said that that that(1) that that that(2) that that other guy said was referring to shouldn't be a that, but a this instead.

If this whole think doesn't make sense, this other sentence might be right with just six thats:

I said that that that(1) that that that(2) was referring to shouldn't be a that, but a this instead.

*brain melts*

I feel like I typed way too much for a thing that's most likely completely uncorrect and illogical.

No, you can't do that. Look at it like this: replace the word 'that' with 'which' where they have the same approximate meaning, and replace the reference 'that', the one in italics, with something else - anything. Wallet, for example.

So you have:
I said that that wallet which that wallet which that wallet which that wallet... referred to was supposed to be a this.

As you can see, it doesn't work. Only the first time can the threesome of 'that's be repeated.

Dang it, I did it again! Now 'wallet' doesn't look like it's spelled right! Arrrrghhh..... :doubt:

Yes we can! Goddammnit sandwich we're not going to take this lightly, not at all! Actually I can do one of two things I can ban you now for your sublime presumption or I can give him the title.

Now, now, how many times have I told you that God's last name is not dammnit?

Look at the version I "translated" again: you're missing a verb/action in between every set of repetitions beyond the 2nd.

No need, just sit him down in front of that movie "Pi" and he'll come running out, screaming to you not to allow him to be a genuis. :)

It's getting a little late, which puts me in the right mood for doing something like this, but also means I could've messed up something along the way.

If you structure it so that that that that that that followed isn't actually necessary for a proper grammatical construct, but is merely included to increase the number of "that's" in a row to 6, then I think that's that.

I know for certain that it can be done, and I know where each that sits in relation to the overall sentence, but it's the rest of the sentence that's the trick

You won't see me half a mile away from any screen that's displaying a movie called "Pi", no thankyou. :D

what this all about anyways?
putting that word "that" in grammatically correct sentence ?
common seriously........

example :
slide that card over the counter for me jack
slide that apple over there
did that car slide over the hill and get into a wreck?

no offense but how dumb can you be?

what a brain teaser lol:eek:

You really are high or drunk or something, aren't you? It's to put it in a sentence as many times in a row as possible.

Now go stick your head in a bucket of ice water or something...

Ah yes but to me(maybe not to you) it works because there's an 'understood' verb there.
When you say a command to someone, you don't have a subject in the sentence, but its still gramatically correct because there is an 'understood you' in the front.
I just think its right because there's an 'understood referred to' between all the sets of thats.

Too bad those eight thats were wrong. I felt like I had pushed it way too much. I am still wondering, though, if this one is correct or not:

I said that that that that that [/i]that[/i] that was mentioned earlier was referring to shouldn't be a that, but a this instead.

But now I promise I'll never use the word 'that' ever again. And it starts right now.

Yep, I'm pretty sure about that. :D

My only consolation for having been subjected to your brain-killing sentences is that, in a month or two, you will grow to hate your new title.:D

That's good, same concept as Levyathan's prize-winner - the only way it can work, actually. :p

Well, I can see what you mean, sort of like one's neibours dog's previous owners' ex-wife's sisters' mother's etc etc, but in our case it's not correct grammar. :)

Nope - can't be done. The next to the last "that" is missing an action. :)
