Interesting read here, an editorial on the Jerusalem Post. Has absolutely nothing to do with politics or Israel, don't worry! :) It's actually right up CP's alley.... :drevil:

CP, have you seen the indie movie "Pi"?
-
I don't know whether to laugh or cry........
-
503 error? That's a new one...
EDIT: There we go...and...well...I don't know what to make of it really... Er...yay for geeks?
-
Hmm...
You talk a lot about CP, sandwich. :p And you also do a lots of threads (OT, of course)...

Hmm... you're right, on both counts. Imagine that. ;)

Yeah Pi was very good.
Interesting but somewhat hard to watch. Not my cup of tea but I admired the approach the director took.
On a related note have you saeen 'Requiem for a dream'? Same director. That film was downright depressing.
-
Best indie film I have seen in years was Memento.

Haven't yet, although the same friend who introduced me to Pi is just dying ti get his hands on 'Requiem'. :)
While we're on the subject of bizzare movies, I just watched 'Vanilla Sky' for the first time tonight. Wow - incredible.

"snd-wich"?? Have I impacted your life that much? ;)
-
*Gets idea; starts writing again.
"Don't get logical with me, you misbegotten mathematician!"*
:drevi:
No, no, it's just- well, you'll see.
Incidentally, is anyone interested in a position as Dark Lord of the Sith? Not only does it have excellent health benefits, but the position also entails special employee benefits at Kuat Drive Yards, including a special discount on Super Star Destroyers :D
-
i am, what does it entail? :D
i just noticed sandwich, you post a lot of threads, and unlike me, yours seem pretty popular, they all sit at the top of the topics list :)

Looks like the nerds are taking over the world; good... :D
One thing I really don't like about the movies that they mentioned there is that, at least from what I have heard, they make almost no mention of the actual math that these people discovered. I do not care much about their lives; I want to know of their work! :D

No I have not, but I have seen less than five movies in my life. :D what is an indie movie?

Figures, I guess... Unfortunately for you, other people don't share the fascination - and in many cases, the mere ability - to understand all these mathematical geniuses. IIRC, the guy in A Beautiful Mind came up with Game Theory, which is economics. But people are more interested in his emotions and so on being emotional themselves.
Oh, and an Indie film is a film that is either produced and/or distributed by those outside the mainstream film-publishing world - ie. not through Sony, 20th Century Fox. Usually these films have a lower budget than big releases, but this means they must sacrifice special effects for storytelling (*ahem* Attack of the Clones *ahem*). They also sometimes take on themes and ideas that major publishers will not because they are not highly profitable, straightforward blockbusters.
However, this also means that some of the time you get muddy, dull-as-death foreign-language films about the hardships of an Iranian goatherd boy, or something. :p
-
Ah I see; I first thought it was an Indian hindi movie. :D (which by the way I think are even worse than American movies; the rest of my family watches them quite a bit at home and they are riddled with emotions and are generally stupid as hell)
But people are more interested in his emotions and so on being emotional themselves.
well they're all messed up; screw them and make an actual good movie! :D Some nice ideas might be to just record several university math lectures or maybe a compilation of Hitler's speeches, or how about a movie detailing the political events in 1917 Russia or 1930s Germany from a historical view... ;7

Hm, ever heard of the Discovery Channel? Or National Geographic?

Those are called Bollywood movies. Don't ask me why. :p
And yes, documentaries have their place. But so do cinemas. These places do not coexist. People want to watch movies for emotional engagement of some sort or another. Right or wrong, that's what they're there for.

Probably because they all come from Bombay/Mumbai. :D

ah come on; one could even argue that suicide bombing is a form of "emotional disengagement" from the world... :D

Yes, but those aren't really movies in that sense... :p

Well, I'd imagine that people don't usually want such... permanent disengagement. :D

Yes, they are - there's even an Oscar for those things. :D :p

Honestly? I believe that it's because I post about various topics that have potential to stir up discussion/argument. :D
Or maybe it's just that the forumites 'round here tend to focus on my topics in the same manner that the media tends to focus on Israel-related stuff, oftentimes to the exclusion of all else. :doubt:

Probably because many of them are politics topics, and those catch on fire easily on any forum. As for the rest, well, you have been posting some rather...uh...unusual topics lately. :D

Hmmm... I guess that's exactly why I like bringing CP into my discussions - he can be counted on to keep things lively! :p :D
