This laptop is on sale near me for £500 secondhand.
M17x R4 alienware.
Now bearing in mind it looks to be a four year old model, would you say this is good deal?

Assuming this has the same specs as I've found on the internets for it (Core i7-3720QM, GeForce GT680M, 8GB of RAM), it seems like a pretty decent gaming machine. It's certainly going to be better for gaming than a new machine for the same price.
-
The windows signage said it's an i7-36gbm whatever that means.
But it's reassuring to hear positive feedback.
The most modern games going on it are home world 2 remastered and kerbs space program probably.
There will be much photo editing in light room and some after effects too.
-
Should be more than beefy enough then.
-
I will begin convincing the wife to let me spend my own money then.
I might even be able to play BP act three at this rate.
-
That does indeed sound like a pretty good deal at that price; let us know how it works out.
-
Well it's now in my bag. Weighs nine pounds and the charger is 2 pounds all in all 11 pounds. Still, If I take random incoming small arms fire then I can take shelter behind it.
7 day grace period of full refund so I intend to "run it into the ground" in five. If it survives I shall keep it.

Funnily enough that's almost exactly the same machine I have now. I can run Witcher 3 quite easily on medium settings and could probably run it higher with some tweaks, so it should be capable of running anything you planned to throw at it.

Thank you kindly for all the insight.
I'll post some proper specs later tonight.
edit-
Hopefully it'll prove to be slightly upgradeable in the future.
-
It should be very upgradeable. You have a second 2'5 inch hard drive bay, an mSATA port and if you have 8GB of RAM you most likely have two memory slots still unused.
-
Forged alliance. Runs no issues.
Homeworld remastered. Runs flawlessly.
Fallout 3. Absolutely splendid.
will try X 3 tonight too.
only been benchmarking at this time but so far it's a definite keeper.
and so pretty in black and red. The wife would like the lights turned pink......
