So out of the previous shown examples (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=92265.msg1823757#msg1823757) it seemed the second and third were the most in favor, so here they are again.
Again, if you have comments or want to propose something else instead, go right ahead.

Reminder for those that don't care for avatars, you will be able to disable them.

I like the idea and prefer layout 1 but for ~reasons~ that can be best expressed as "because I want it" I'd prefer a square avatar. Accordingly, I picked option 4.
-
If we did do rectangular avatars I definitely like the look of layout 1, and they would fit with the page aspect ratios we already have, but they do seem a bit unusual as far as avatars go.
-
Finally a chance to use all the nameplates I've accumulated down the years.

I didn't include a square one because it didn't seem to get votes before.
So here, for completion sake, is sample 3.

So much prefer the rectangular because it fits so nicely under/above a row of five badges. It also takes up less vertical space and makes it feel as though the left side of a post is meant to fit together nicely rather than just being a jumble of profile attributes.
-
Avatar size isn't an issue if you include enough post content. And it'd be even less of an issue if that smattering of contact details was a userpage feature and not an every-post feature.
EDIT: remainder of post remanded to correct thread.

I do like Option 2 the most. I'd also like to think that if people wanted a more square one, they could upload a 60x60 one and bam, square.

Rectangular OR square? Now you're just being crazy...
-
My vote remains not having them.

It's worth pointing out that it's not certain we'll be able to choose between 1 and 2. We might be stuck with Avatars where they are now as it might require more messing about with SMF than we know how to do.
But it's still a good idea to figure out what people prefer. I agree with Axem on Option 2 personally.

Small design point:
Spoon is dimensioning the avatars according to the number of badges he has, which is 5. Problem is, the max number of badges you can have horizontally is 6, not 5. It will look bad under, say, MJN's badges.
I thus recommend you guys use 208 pixels horizontally as your avatar dimension. For the vertical, you could use an arbitrary number, or you can think some people might want to use squares in their avatars, by which I recommend either you use the dimension that 3 badges occupy on the horizontal (102 pixels) or 2 badges (67).
My negative 2 cents.

Err, wat?

The number of badges in a row actually depends on zoom level. It varies between 5 and 6, only going down to 4 with extreme zoom.
-
We could possibly just change the site's formatting to clamp it to 5.

But... I have 3 and not 5.

That's quite .... wat. My screen shows 6.
OOh nevermind. My browser showcases HLP with a 125% by default. Whenever I put it to 100% it goes back to 5. I see now, my bad (I also see others have realised this as well).
(and yes, it's ****ing impossible to read at 100% with my monitor).

The name of the pug must be Snuffalopagus! Else Snuffy isn't in the poll!

Speaking of useless traditions
-
Well, the results so far show a 80% in favor of avatar's in one form or another and 20% who don't, or don't care one way or another.
Pretty clear outcome.

Yeah, well, HLP isn't exactly a democracy.

Even if it isn't, you're not in charge of it. You are, however, absolutely free to leave the attitude elsewhere.

I can't help but feel that you're reading something I never wrote. I stated a simple fact, I didn't complain, ask for change, or call out anyone on anything.
