Hey all!
I'm trying to replace the default opening cutscene with my own intro. Problem is, I'm not sure how to get it into .ogg format. Can someone who's done this before tell me what software they used? Does it even need to be .ogg to work?
Thanks!

Here's a list of software to look at that might help, not sure which is the best, but while you're waiting for an answer, you could take a look see:

Thanks!
I think I've succeeded in converting it to a .ogg, however it won't play in game. I've named it intro.ogg and put it in the data/movies folder, but when I launch my mod, it goes straight to the pilot login screen without showing any cutscene.
I know other mods like Blue Planet and BtA have done this, it's got to be posssible.
Help?
EDIT: Also, when I try to open my intro.ogg in Windows Media Player, it doesn't show any video. I can only hear the music. However when I extract the intro.ogg from BtA, Windows Media Player does play the video as well as the audio.
Really I should probably just ask mjn.mixael what he did for BtA.

The problem with the applications that are offered on that list is that they convert to .ogv format, which is different from .ogg. I can't get .ogv to work with Freespace, every other mod seems to use .ogg.
Thanks anyway!

Sounds like you may have accidentally created an OGG Vorbis (audio) file instead?

.ogv and .ogg are both valid file extensions for OGG Theora; FSO only looks for the latter, so if you get a working video with the .ogv extension, you should be able to just rename it.

I think that I could have created an audio file, yeah.
I converted my video to .ogv and renamed it intro.ogg. The default cutscene plays, FSO just ignores the file.
EDIT: So when FSO sees the file, I think what it sees is "intro.ogg.ogv"
EDIT: As a matter of fact, looking at my mod in VPView, that's exactly what it is - intro.ogg.ogv.

SOLVED
Sorry for the text-heavy post above. I followed this tutorial: http://www.mediacollege.com/microsoft/windows/extension-change.html
...and renamed the .ogv file extension to .ogg. It works now, my cutscene plays! :D Thanks a ton!

Having that option enabled by default is the most pants-on-head stupid decision that Microsoft has ever made.

Not just Windows; Macs do it too.

On the other side of things... can you just imagine how many calls people like us would get asking for help when all our grandmothers and uncles start renaming files without any regard to the file extension? No thanks.
Let's leave the status quo for another 15 years and then we can start to un-stupid some computer related functions.
