Like the "what's your worst movie" thread, but opposite. What's your favorite movie (s) and why?
This Thread may contain Spoilers. Be advised
So... fire away :) It doesn't have to be a 'hollywood' movie either, and it has no requirements like black and white, color, old movie, new movie, etc. just fire away :) This should be interesting, and since a lot of us share the same opinions on movies, if you recommend a movie it's very probable that i'll go rent it and watch it! :)
let's do this:
(i can't think of any offhand :D )
-
Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 is pretty good...
I can't think of any others off the top of my head...
-
I remembered some :D
Some good movies:
- Sphere
- Behind Enemy Lines (I just liked this movie... :D )
- Blade of Fury (it's an Asian movie, you probably haven't heard of it)
- TombstoneWith Val Kilmer and Kurt Russel... one of my favorites)
- The Mummy/The Mummy Returns (even though some parts were incredibly cheesy and totally non-scary, i liked them)
- X-Men (great)
- Bad Company (pretty new movie, but incredibly cool)
- Mission: Impossible (1 and 2) (lol ;7)
- Spiderman
can't think of any others offhand. How about some of yours? :)
-
Star Wars Trilogy
The Matrix
All Bond Movies
Minority Report
A Beautiful Mind
LOTR: Fellowship of the Rings
Road to Perdition
EDIT: Annnnnnd
More Bruce Willis movies than you can shake a stick at.
A crap load of Arnold S. (I can't be bothered to spell his name out!) movies.
-
Well, besides the SW Trilogy, my favorite movie is definitely Memento, by Christopher Nolan. Rent it. It's gooood.
-
Memento... cool.
haven't heard of it, but if they have it at blockbuster, then it's as good as rented on Sunday night
The One with Jet Li was actually a pretty good movie...
-
sorry, double post
-
Gladiator
matrix

Star Gate

Jet.....Li.......kicks........ass!
And besides the film could've been made from old StarTrek outakes and photos of Joan Collins the final scene would still make it s kick-ass movie.
"No. You are my *****. You are all my *****es."
*gets mobbed by like 400 people and kicks all their asses*
-
Jet Li may kick ass (as a matter of fact he does), but that doesn't mean the movie does.
-
ah hem. Escape from New York! Escape from L.A.!
thats the good stuff.
Resident Evil, and Final Fantasy are also incredibly good. oh yeah.
-
Also Dumn and Dumber
Sorry for posting so many times, these just pop up in my mind as i sit here.
-
All Star Wars Movies
All James Bond
Aladin
Austin Powers 1, 2, and 3
Black Hawk Down
Bad Company was cool too, anthony hopkins was a pimp
Newer Jackie Chan Movies rule
MIB
Star Trek First Contact
All i can think of... i think...
And Waynes World!!
Don't Forget Terminator 1 and 2
oooo and Resident Evil, jus saw that one. Some bad effects (the hunters sucked , claymation looks better) but good movie.
And Blue Crush looks to be a nice one ;7
-
Princess Mononoke
Lion King :p
Matrix
Dragonheart
Final Fantasy - TSW
Resident Evil
The Mummy/Mymmy Returns (I liked these... they had good humour)
Taxi1/Taxi
Rush Hour
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
For Example...
-
Fight Club was all right, it was highly entertaining bull****. Hmm... Ghost Dog was pretty good (Come on, who saw Ghost Dog and didn't like it?)... Dr. Strangelove even more so (that shot with the pilot riding the nuke down to the Russian missile silo was, in my opinion, the greatest scene that ever was or will be made)... I don't know.
-
My favourite movies are:
Star Wars Trilogy including the prequels
Starship Troopers
All the Star Trek movies so far...still waiting for Nemesis. (Looks like it will be a great movie too!)
Matrix
Die Hard series
Spiderman
...and some others movies which hI have forgotten the title to.
I'm looking forward to some other movies too. Shanghai Knights (because a very pretty Singaporean actress will be acting in it), Terminator 3, The Incredible Hulk, and some other rumors like Batman VS Superman.
-
Best movies I've ever seen... Hmmm...
1. Shawshank Redemption (Awesome. Exelent.)
2. Braveheart (FREEEEeedom! *whack* :()
3. The Great Escape (Steve McQueen kicks ass)
4. Star Wars Saga (all of em. Its one big movie after all)
5. Indiana Jones Trilogy (oh come on, need I explain?)
6. Blues Brothers (We're on a mission from god...)
7. Gladiator (Sweeet...)
8. Black Hawk Down (Sweeet...)
9. Casino (Who can beat Joe Pesci stabbing some one with a pen?)
10. Army of Darkness (This is my BOOMSTICK!)
This is my Top 10. And I've seen HUNDREDS going on a thousand movies. :D

Probably Star Wars episodes 5 and 6.

Oh, man.... I made the mistake of watching Sphere back-to-back with Event Horizon during a very boring weekend in the army... like seeing the same movie twice. Kinda spoiled both of them for me.
And dude: Mission Impossible 1 & 2?!? Pardon me, but I grew up with Mission Impossible (the series), and those 2 movies were just bad and worse... in the first one they suddenly have everyone become traitors, so Cruise has to do "it" alone. Teamwork was always a major part of M:I. And the second one was a half-hour movie with alot of special effect stunts and slow-motion scenes that made it qualify as a full-blown movie. Oh, yeah - no team-work there, either. They both get a thumbs-down from me.
Now Ocean's 11 was a movie with a true Mission: Impossible feel to it - centered around teamwork, with a lot of plot twists and an incredible payoff. The only main difference was that in Ocean's 11, the team were "bad guys" in a sense. But that didn't really matter much. :D

First Contact was VIII; just remember that all the better Star Trek movies are the even-numbered ones. :) Insurrection wasn't so good that I'd put it on my top-ten, but it was pretty fun - kinda like a long, good episode. :)
Oh, and... The Phantom Menace and AotC?? Huh?

Pretty many like AotC, but that I don't understand how can TPM be favorite... :wtf::D

I liked the Phantom Menace. I mean yeah, sure its not all dark and murky like the first trilogy, but it wasn't supposed to be. My stand point on the whole thing is, that it's Lucas's baby, so if he wihshes to throw in the Teletubies in EPIII to join up with Jar Jar who discovers he has force powers, SO BE IT! It will be part of Star Wars, and not me, or anyone can change it otherwise.
Concerning Star Wars, Lucas is its god. And he can do what he wants. If he will drag it through the mud, we can't get angry at him for it. Its not ours. No matter how many times we've watched it to escape from the harsh horrors of reality in our past. No matter how many countless hours we've played with the toys when we were kids. No matter how much we've grown up with the film, we can't get angry at him for it. Yeah, ok, if the films don't live up to our expectations, its not our fault. Like I said before, we grw up with it, its almost a part of our lives, and to see new movies bring in new things is scary and HUMANS in general are xenophobes.
Damn... I gotta take it easy... :p *Still pissed off about remember Moulin Rouge...*

Who hates it because of Jar Jar? Everyone I know hates it because it's a bad movie.

Dude, you reeeaaallly gotta lay off of the snuff.... ;)
But while we're on Star Wars, RotJ is my favorite. Yub Yub, NeoHunter! :D
And if Lucas does 7,8 and 9, I certainly hope he uses Timothy Zahn's Thrwan trilogy as the basis. Those rocked!
-
Black Hawk Down
Saving Private Ryan
NOTHING beats a realistic war/action movie. These show true justice to combat.
I shudder in revulsion at the thought of cheesy crap where the hero magically avoids a trillion bullets flying at him just by diving in random directions, meanwhile hitting every single person shooting at him with pinpoint accuracy from his unlimited ammo pistol. And don't even get me started about that vile abomination known as "Rambo." Those movies made me wanna puke.
-
I don't hate TPM, but Jar-Jar makes it much worse. Even without Jar-Jar it wouldn't be too good, though, but a lot better at least.

I sure hope he would, but it seemed to end at the episode 6. At least Yoda is dead, and so is Darth Vader and the emperor...

Which is why he should, IMHO, base it off Zahn's trilogy - Awe-inspiring baddies, very good plot w/ plenty of cliffhangers/twists, etc. Have you never read them?
Cannakin: Welcome the the HLPBB!!!

Ack, don't hurt me! Actually I'm not new to the FS community. I hung around the VBB a lot since June 2000, but it went kinda down the drain so now I was just lurking in the shadows till now.
Oh and you're the 3247674867828498586th person to spell my name like that. Must be a conspiracy. Btw, my name has NOTHING to do with "Anakin" and has been in existance loooong before Star Wars popped into Lucas' mind. I'll give $0.00000000000001 to anyone who figures out exactly where it came from.

That's why I thought your name sounded familiar. :) I remember you from VBB. But hey, you might not be new to FS community, but new to HLPBB, unless you're a lurker (:mad2::mad2: ).
j/k, I also used to browse HLP before registering... :)

Like an0n said... he likes The One because Jet Li kicks ass :D It may be lame, but Jet Li makes up for it! :D
Because Austin Powers and Men in Black are comedies, not really 'favorite' movies... they're funny, but you can't watch them like 3 or 4 times

I'll bet no one in this forum can guess what two styles were used in that movie. Both were unique in a hollywood movie, and were hardly used in any Asian movies too. Anyone?
Ocean's 11 was good, but because it was so confusing, I only understood how it worked like 2 days after i saw the movie!
Gladiator and the Matrix are awesome...

The first thought that popped into my mind bout' your name was machaly coulkin. Maybe i'm high, maybe its the oatmeal, but it just sounds right

But that's the whole point... Thrawn is even more powerful, because he's got a whole species that will die for him, and they're the best hand-to-hand combat fighters in the world!
...unti Leia unveils the conspiracy and they start hating him :D
-
That would make a kick ass star wars trilogy. or even one or two movies. one of my favorites of the books
-
because thrawn's awesome!
I don't remember what book this was... could have been part of the Thrawn trilogy but i doubt it... it was where Luke has to go fight this guy called Kueller, who's actually a young teenager, but the force is so powerful it's corrupted him, and he's more powerful than "master" luke skywalker now. He wears a mask to hide his identity and he's uber-evil :D
Now back ON TOPIC :D

who's memorizing star wars fanfic? I read the book and i remembered some stuff which i'm telling Knight Templar

Don't argue with me, I'm twitching and being disturbed by all of you evidently being obsessed with wierd stuff.
I'm going to go measure the refractive spline patterns of the caustics of that third heirarcy of polys on the Vasudan CB anim #23602 now.

2001: A Space Odyssey
Aliens
Blade Runner
The Exorcist
The Seven Samurai
Could be one of those.
-

anyone? :D
-
*Finnishes punching, a sweaty...*
Phew. Ok, I'm back to normal.
OOOOoooh, how can I forget the Seven Samurai?!! Damn that was a good movie! Akira Kurosawa's second greatest films is ofcourse Yojimbo, which was later on americanized into "A fist full of Dollars" With Clint Eastwood and "Last Man Standing" With Bruce Willis. But nothing, compares to the original. :D
-
In order of absolute favorite to least favorite.
We Were Soldiers
Black Hawk Down
Full Metal Jacket
Men In Black
Behind Enemy Lines
Saving Private Ryan
StarWars Ep V: The Empire Strikes Back
StarWars Ep VI: Return of the Jedi
-
Star Wars(all of em)
Full Metal Jacket
Final Fantasy:TSW
More prolly but i gtg offline.
-
I like The Fifth Element. :p Fun sort of movie.
Is it just me, or does it seem that to much of Episodes I and II are digital. Parts of them just look down right fake. And when you compare it to LOTR (which used lots of models and real sets) or even the original trilogy, it just seems visually lacking. There are some great scenes, but alot of them look added-in-later. Heck, even the Special Editions look better. Any comments?
-
The Fifth Element? that movie freaked me out!
-
There, there Stealth, it will be okay.
Are you sure you're thinking of the right movie. Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich:) , Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker.... comedy:confused:
-
no... i'm thinking of another movie... sorry :D
-
Event Horizon was scary. Scared the crap out of a freind. :shaking: :nervous:
-
Diamonds Are Forever (best bond movie, best Bond actor)
Unbreakable (unusually good character development for a hollywood movie, IMO)
Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels (cool/funny as hell, fantastic soundtrack)
Austin Powers (1 - not seen goldmember yet, tho)
There was also another film I saw a while back - really thought provoking & farily clever- but god knows if I can remeber the name or even the story of it. I've a feeling it was British, though....

You're all pathetic... i'll answer my own question:
Question: What two styles were demonstrated in "Jet Li - The One" that weren't displayed as much in any Hollywood movie yet? (they were displayed in a few Asian movies, but not much)
Answer: The styles of Bagua and Hsing-I. The "good" Jet Li (Gabe) practiced Bagua (circular movements) and the "bad" Jet Li (Yulaw) practiced Hsing-I (straight, direct movements)... Ultimately, Bagua beat Hsing-I (in the movie and in real life)

Hilarious... I wasn't sure if BW, MJ etc. in a Scifi comedy would work but it did... like a dream :)
Luc Besson is a great director (and now venom comes and says... ... ...)

It did actually. I never said that it didn't freak me out either, i just neglected to mention it. :blah: Stealth, that's way to technical for us people. We know nothing.

My top 10.
10. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, still the best.
9. Die Hard II, always good for a laugh.
8. Event Horrizon, yes, it was a bit scary :shaking:
7. Sphere, takes a bit of thinking.
6. The Sixth Sense, very clever, has Samuel L Jackson in it.
5. Gattaca, just nice to watch.
4. The Matrix, good effects.
3. Fifth Element, very colourful.
2. Fight Club, has style, very clever plot.
1. Shaw Shank Redemtion, nice twist to it, great directing.
