Uh... no, FRED has no other ways of placing ships without holding CTRL and clicking. Does your keyboard only have one CTRL key, or does it have two and you somehow broke both? You don't have any other keyboards anywhere you could use instead?

Is there any mission i can download that is purely a duel between two ships?
I've no intent to create missions, just want to see how ships fare in duels

Sucks man. I know the pain.
Speaking of which, allow me to ask a question or two.
1.) any way to rotate view in FRED without a numpad (laptop)
2.) trying to have a destroyer with scannable subsystems, but nothing is working. I know I did it before, and I looked into the "scan the Sathanas" mission and every combo of checkboxes I tried (scannable, cargo known, alternate subsystem scanning) fails me

Just download one of the missions from here and delete things until you're down to a couple of ships
Beginner's missions are a good bet since they have very few events.

1) Your laptop may have a way to emulate a numpad. On my Lenovo, it's Fn-ScrLk. You'll have to get used to toggling that on and off as needed (the number of times I've ended up with a De3ta wing is worryingly high), but it'll work.
2) I believe you just need to assign some cargo to the subsystem in the Initial Status window.
Also, you'll generally get better, or at least faster, advice with a more specific thread title - "Need a workaround for a busted Ctrl key in FRED". I'd likewise advice creating a separate thread for your issue instead of repurposing an existing one for the same reason.
