Title: OT : Set0i@home 3.07 screwage
Post by: daveb on August 10, 2002, 05:26:14 pm
This is off topic, but this forum tends to be pretty active so I figure I can get verification of this quickly :

I just tried updating to seti@home 3.07 off the seti website. I tried both mirrors they had available. In _both_ cases running the install exe resulted in  -> Grokster <- getting installed. This warrants one huge WTF.  I posted on the seti forums but no one has responded yet.

Any brave souls wanna try downloading/installing just to verify that I'm not losing my mind?

Its one of the mutant versions of Kazaa, as far as I can tell. So yes, spyware among other things.

According to a Seti guy :

Quote

No, actually it is a known problem. It results from a 'dangling' setup file
from a previous install. The cure is to:

Delete old file in the \windows\temp folder
Put the S@H install file in an empty folder
Run the install from a clean, empty folder.

Thing is, I don't recall every installing Grokster, but... oh well.

Yeah, my friends sister installed a AOHell CD. Why is beyond both of us, I think she was trying to circumvent the pretty poor protection we added to his internet connection (we left the save password tickbox blank ;) ) by setting up her own connection.
