Title: Nodewars wants YOU!
Post by: Ace on August 11, 2002, 01:13:27 pm
Nodewars has plenty of nations looking for leaders, plus a vast unexplored area of space.

Don't feel intimidated, join today, but watch out for the Shivans...

These threads are really getting annoying. If someone wants to join nodewar they can go to the forum. Stop trying to recruit people.

Bleh, I won't start NW as it's strange and takes a lot of time and have-to-read 1000 pages of general discussion to get started, well, almost. :p Or so I guess.

No you dont. Tiara, heretic, Icy, all settled in well without it taking loads of time up. You need to read the timeline, which tells you whats been going on.

Is... is that timeline the story thread? :eek2:

Actually, it does take a god-awful amount of time. I should know- that's why I quit twice in a row. It's fine if you have absolutely nothing else to do all day, every day, but if you even want to skim through and FIND the basic news you think you need to know, forget reading EVERYTHING, you've gotta be ready to spend two to five hours every day doing just that. And that's not even including

Getting background
Arguing
Posting new info
communicating with allies
picking fights (where applicable)
Figuring out who's allied to who (more of a weekly thing)
getting told "You can't do that" for a bajillion different reasons, particularly when actually trying to do something
Getting told "you can't do that, either"
Getting your tech stuff and OOB approved by every. frickin'. minor official. in the. frickin'. universe. again. and again.
Getting your most recent moves approved (see above, and don't miss anyone or they'll get upset and find an excuse to not allow it)
Alerting all interested parties as to what you just did, and making sure they won't ignore it.
Waging war, arguing over results.
untangling politics after some guy ignores everything and blunders his entire fleet straght through yours and colonizes you.
Writing storylines
Editing storylines, because you missed a hundred quadrillion things that happened recently, 'cos you didn't spend all day reading posts, you had to write your own and do all this stuff.
Getting told "you can't do that, either. Didn't I tell you that already?"

It's a ****load of time, and considering it really doesn't accomplish anything in the slightest, it's way too much in my opinion. If you have tons of time you can't pass actually doing something, great. But it's not much fun a good deal of the time (writing OOBs is fun, at least for me. But then again, I write OOBs for Rasta colonies and all-powerful smuggling cartels, and didn't really bother to get them edited into some stock empire just like everyones and then conditionally approved), and it really starts to feel more like work than work after a while. I have not exaggerated more than two lines in the above list, and each thing can take up to an hour. A long, dull hour.

And hell will pay if you miss a day, for some reason.

That sums it up for me.

Or actually, I'm not so sure after all... :nervous:

No Stryke, not at all. Just because you powergamed and quit cos we wouldnt tolerate it doesnt mean you can go around making things up!
Title: Nodewars wants YOU!
Post by: Stryke 9 on August 11, 2002, 03:17:35 pm
Making things up? Powergamed? I had basically quit when the Dogstars went out. That was the plan, in fact I had written a story post with all my dudes jumping out, only Ace asked me very nicely to hold the Tabral for a while. So I decided, since I was being told to stay, to see what I could get away with, and how bad you guys wanted me. Powergamed? Before that, the only "powergaming" that happened was that you all got in a fuss over my welding mining drills to jato rockets, and my introduction of electronic subterfuge into play for ALL PARTIES IN THE GAME.
Powergamed? The last complaint I got was because one of tow ships in my fleet- a force utterly without naything OTHER than these two ships- was a bit large as a megafreighter, never mind that it was a frail-ass civilian model. No, my friend, I did nothing of the sort. You simply have a game in which you either "play" in one very constrained, specific, utterly boring way, with a few attributes identical to everyone else's, or you're "powergaming"- meaning anything not fitting your stock model. I calls it as I sees it, and this isn't a game, it's all the annoyance and boredom of filling out tax forms, without the threat of prison for doing ot wrong and without the fulfillment of watching your hard-earned money get leeched into some defence contractor's pockets. What I said here was the absolute and utter truth, the REASON I quit, whether I left noisily or not, and the reason I will warn anyone who asks to stay away. If they wanna do it, they can. But I can and will express my opinion and impart what I know on the matter, and there's nothing you can do about it. BS away, I think they'll be able to sort out the truth at a glance on their own.

How 'bout a deal- I'll stop telling the new recruits what to expect when NodeWar stops encroaching on the other forums. I'm tired of being reminded of it- it's like hearing Eminem infinitely looped on a speaker turned down really low. And it really is spam. All the people there already can play it if they want, and if anyone else wants to join- hell, we've had what- TWO newbies in the past six months? Everyone knows it's here. Everyone knew it was here last time a recruitment was posted here. Everyone knew- [shuts up, conditionally]

Virtu: Yeah, but everyone knows it's here. People still go to the hospital for saltwater enemas (or wherever the hell you'd go for that), even though the (wherever) doesn't advertise. People still get recruited when the Army runs out of absolute, blatant lies to televise temporarily. People will join as they see fit.

As a general reply to the overall topic it comes down to this:

First off, not everyone knows about Nodewars, even HLP frequenters. Some people however may be irritated about these recruitment posts, those who are ignore them in the future. If you have nothing nice to say, do not say it. If you have any complaints about myself or any other moderator contact them in private as opposed to on a public forum.

On those intimidated by general discussion and the other forums, we've had many people join in the last month and they've all managed to get onto the bandwagon.

There's an awful lot of byzantine politics going on in some areas of space, while others are being ravaged by the Shivans. However there is a vast unknown that can be explored and may yet have new empires to find.

Also as game events continue, the face of a lot of the old areas of space are being changed, so we definately would like to see new people there.

NW is meant to be easy to use. We have an IRC channel which you can log onto to ask for a reader's digest of events that effect you from the moderators if you don't feel like checking up constantly on the main forums. We try to keep at least one moderator on and available at the channel during any time of day.

The biggest thing about Nodewars is nothing is ever what it seems. The good guys could be the most vile villains, and vice versa. Watch out. ;)

*raises hand to point out flaw in above statement*

The DNA are exactly what they seem. Evil, power hungry and infinitely resourceful. Also, very good to their allies *hint hint*.

*cough*Ally with the DNA and help conquer known space*cough*

People are also irritated by trolling posts about penis length. Shall I call in a handful of spammers so that you can practice ignoring the irritating threads all over the place?

So... people who had bad experiences in the game shouldn't warn anyone else about such. Good thing you're not a game developer or any kind of commercial sales person. If you can harp on how good it is, I can reveal the downside. Simple. As. That.

IF you have IRC, and are on at just the right time. And it's meant to be easy to use, but it's basically pen-and-paper Master of Orion without the computer doing any work (so you have to sort it yourself, which is what causes the previously mentioned infinite hours of paperwork, since we aren't as fast as computers, or as easily entertained), and wild guesses taking the place of most calculations.

:wtf: IRC logs every chat in txt files... Missed something look it up. And ppl are in the chatroom almost all day... I'm chatting as we speak. You can also ASK for help... If everything was as easy that you never needed help it would be a different thing (And more boring).

And maybe 2 have left. One left cause he had no time (Dark_4ce) But he liked the game. And the other left for reasons beyond me...

Who said anything about that? Remember, I played this game for at least a couple months at the beginning. I know exactly what it takes. And with the dearth of information, odds are extremely high that nobody'll know, or you'll hear it wrong. And when someone has the current state of whatever right once in a while, it's usually changed already. There's simply too much information to have to deal with, which is why MOO and the hundreds of games like it aren't pen-and-paper. Having to deal with every piddling little issue is just plain no fun, a good deal of the time.

I am. So people can't choose for themselves when more than one opinion on the matter is expressed? Am I providing such a compelling dissection of the matter that nobody can help but agree with me? Hah. I think you have it backwards. Freedom of choice is at best minimal when all there is is the propoganda.
