Title: Two new fighter things
Post by: Jabu on July 14, 2001, 01:34:00 pm
In the last few hours I've managed to make two fighters, one stealthy and one interceptor. Need textures, though, and I REALLY suck at texturing    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

They're not very detailed, either.

Stealth, top isometric, 77 polys (   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)) (//"http://koti.mbnet.fi/jabu/stealth.jpg")
Stealth, bottom isometric (//"http://koti.mbnet.fi/jabu/stealth2.jpg")

Interceptor/Recon, 197 polys (//"http://koti.mbnet.fi/jabu/fighter007.jpg")

Sorry for the image quality on the interceptor pic, seems 3D Exploration doesn't like red    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Pic: fixored. Raytrace works so much better  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

The stealth one looks like some kind of paper plane.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Excellent work, though. Good luck with the textures...

Talk about low poly counts. Well, look on the bright side... at least they won't take up much memory.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Okay, any suggestions on how I could make them more detailed? I really can't think of anything  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

If there was a way that you could rounden the edges, that could help.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I think that by putting a big gaping hole in the wings, it would be cooler.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

I was actually going to do that, but I figured it would be possible via textures.

But what the heck, I have loads of spare polys  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Oh, right. I made another fighter/bomber ("http://koti.mbnet.fi/jabu/hfighter001.jpg"), haven't decided which (leaning towards heavy fighter), but it WILL have a rear turret  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Oh?

Yay!

Double Yay!

Hmm... I've run into some unexpected difficulties... it seems I had made such a mess of the model (about 200 unneccessary edges  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)) that I had to model the whole bloody thing again. Or most of it, the bottom bit stayed as it was  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Needs some work ("http://koti.mbnet.fi/jabu/stealthsw.jpg")   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Poly count: 84. I think I'll change it's designation from 'stealth' to 'thing that you throw at enemy in great numbers' (aka Anubis)   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Oh yeah, you're free to tell me if it sucks. I don't want to release a crappy fighter  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I really think you should put some more detail work into it. I personally don't think its really worth the effort of texturing and converting a model that you haven't really put much time into. Even for a simple shape I like to shoot for at least 200 or 300 polys to make it shaped realistcally. With only 70 polys it looks like a refugee from Wing Commander 1 =P

Guess that means I have to get back to the ol' drawing board  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I think I'll add more curves to that thing. It's annoyingly blocky...

Looks like a Pegasus. Make it uglier, that's always good for spaceships (like the Ares- looks like a Thanksgiving turkey the day after, but cool as hell.)
