Title: Spam email
Post by: NegspectahDek on August 11, 2002, 11:00:03 pm
I have been getting spam from my what appears to be my own hotmail address.  I checked the routing and it looks genuine except for the fact then name displays the addy and not my name.  Has this ever happened to any of you?

When you send mail using a cgi, php, asp, etc program, you specify the senders address. Most mail programs, such as hotmail or yahoo!, obviously use the senders address as your own. However, if your using an external program, such as a bot, you can field the script to specify the reciepients email to match the outgoing address. Running a traceroute program on your own email addr isn't going to do anything. You need to look at the extended header information. Though, that can be changed too.

however you can always tell even when the header is changed by researching any HELO commands

Meh, thats normal, its a new spam mail thing they use to make sure you cant reply to them and spam them to hell basically :) And to hide their real e-mail.
