Title: How big can it be?
Post by: gevatter Lars on August 12, 2002, 12:16:25 pm
How long can the longest ship be?
What can the FS2 engine support?

I am just asking because for the WC Saga mod we need to know it.
Is the Kilrathi DN possible with its 22km or must we reduce its lenght?

The Apocalypse from Machina Terra is about 20km long with no problems.  You shouldn't have to worry.

In my opinion, anything over about 15 is stupidly huge. But, my ideas on large ships differ to everyone else's, so ignore me! :)

158th is working on a vessel we're expecting to end up weighing in at 120-240 klicks in diameter, we may have to make some engine modifications to get it to work though.

Well, the Super Star Destroyers (Executor, Eclipse etc...) are about 12-15k so, that's why I accept them. :)

there's no size limit, I have real life sized planet models, they work fine.

:wtf:
I tried this. Its a pain to get them look good once they're textured, even with the reg. fix

P.S. Its not the size that matters, it what you do with it that counts ;)

well, when you do good, if it's big, it's an additional bonus ;)

But planets and a fully armed dreadnought are two different matters.

The Kilrathi Dreadnought is supposed to be a massive  behemoth of a warship.  It was the second ultra big ship ever in a WC game (the first being the Behemoth itself - a big gun! :D).

I had a working 20+ km Shivan superjuggenaut, although I never got round to actually LODing and fully turreting it.

I got a 120km long ship with a few turrets, works fine too, btw.

Amazing...

I actually am stunned and relieved that there is someone more silly than me concerning modding...

So how do those planets work. Do you crash into them? Are you supposed to look for ships hiding in the polar magnetic fields?

BTW you're on the RT mod team right? EZ board is not letting me register for now, so with the mod basically on vacation can I use you as a point of contact? I have almost 1 gig of voice capture and have some missions done. I am getting back to writting more soon. (If the Borg let me). I can burn them all on CD or ICQ them (Kazaa?)

1) they work fine for what I want to do with them, but I've never tried to crash into them ( would be a bit silly anyway ). Mostly they're background stuff, nothing more. My earth model is quite cool, it uses four 512*512 maps, so I can use it on different agles, for different missions, etc.
2) well, for now, I'm not at home, but you can try with Gortef, he's around at HLP too.

I got it! Remember the space station/Ring around Earth in Starship Troopers? How about making that? I mean it is "stupidly huge" but justified in that MANY cap ships (orions in equiv I would think) dock with the sucker at once... Plus many turrents along the ring to destroy the planet bombs (was that from Klendathu or Gamilon? Hehe was that supposed to be a rip off (inspiration) of starblazers?

IF I see Gortef around I'll give him a holler (thanks). I saw the "ship of light" model from BSG. I wonder how big it is?

Not exactly a ship but an idea for a background perchance? Larry Niven's RINGWORLD. (inspired HALO I believe. Also Inspired the Star Trek episode about the Dyson Sphere. A HUGE sphere that encompassed the sun and the outer edge was at Earth orbit so you had ALL that space around the sun 360 Degress to build/live on. Great idea until the sun goes bad [BOOM!])

Oooo! Tangent idea! Make a Dyson Sphere and when you get inside you find out that it is really a base! You get sucked in to exploring the insides and soon as you are a certain distance from the entrance you get ambushed! :p
