Title: Starlancer
Post by: Thor on August 13, 2002, 12:27:07 pm
I have the opportunity to buy Starlancer really cheaply.  I was wondering if it was worth buying and playing or not.  If anyone has played it, let me know what you thought of it.

Edit:  dam I forgot a poll.  Put a 1 if you liked, 2 if you didn't and 3 if you aren't sure

(1) it rocked

Alright - its not FreeSpace, but nothing ever really has been better. The graphics is superb, and I can remember some very cool moments involving me, a cloaking device and a big-ass-thing which I won't tell u about incase u actually buy the game.

Hmm... Freelancer.

Freespace
Starlancer

Since Starlancer was a rip-off of FS anyway, this is evil!

How did you work that out? The story is totally different...the style is totally different...

yeah, freespace style is good, starlancer style is not. this game can be resumed by "shoot down the torpedoes before they destroy your capship which is anyway useless coz it can't defend itself, can't kill other capships, can't do crap but annoying you by being target"

In my own opinion, I think Starlancer is a so-so game with average graphics if you compare to FreeSpace. Some of the missions are almost difficult complete unless you died  a few times then you will know the sequence of events in the mission. Your fighter can't do anything to big capital ships. Not like FreeSpace where you have bad ass torpedoes like the Cyclops and the Helios.

So, I give it a "buy-it-if-you-are-loaded".

You can so do stuff to capships... you have to knock out the shields first....

And you do get to fly bombers for a couple of the missions IIRC.

Also, the games got good graphics (although the backgrounds leave something to be desired the rest of it rawks).

I thought the game was decent. The control scheme and way the ships handled I did not appreciate however. (It doesn't handle like WC/FS)

Missions I felt were a little dry, on average it was the same three mission types repeated over and over: Destroy enemies, defend target from torpedo, destroy subsystem. Though FS is limited to this type of gameplay, for some reason it seems less blunt about it then Starlancer.

However there are some memorable missions. The first with a wormhole, the unloading torpedoes into a Ruskie capship, and the flying inside of a hollowed-out asteroid are fun missions. Sadly it needed more missions like this IMHO.

yeah, the wormhole one was very nice.
other bad point: you criticize FS2 AI? try and play Starlancer and oh! magic! after that, you'll think the :v: AI programmers are gods :p
to sum up: you can't do more stupid than Starlancer AI...

The only good thing about Starlancer is that the demo was really the full game! If you used the level skip cheat, you could paly any mission, evn those not included as part of the demo! You could also enter a cheat which allowed any ship and any weapon!

Sorry to dig this up.... but has anyone confirmed this?

Actually that isn't possible. The demo is about 60MB and it can't have it all. Besides why would they put all those missions and data and graphics to  demo version?

You are right actually, I've been speaking to this mate of mine and it turns out that for this to work you need to download "some extra files". Probably the missions.

Well when the source-coders start releasing stuff, FS will encompass starlancer, anyway.

Has anyone here ever played the Germany version?
If you understand german buy it and you will laugh about the sincro of the voices. Everyone has its own dialect. English (Texan maybe), Japanis and so one. Even the germans have there dialect...can't remember that I ever had such one ^___^
Its just funy...ok most people don't like it, but I think it makes much of the atmosphere in the game...since all members of your wing are from different countries its realistic that they don't speak a perfect german.
Don't know about the english version, is it the same there?

About the problem that fighters can destroy caps...have you seen how big this Tropedos are? Show me a fighter that can carrie them! OK you could say the designers should make them smaller, but with this bomber protection becomes a realy importent part of the game..in Freespace you can use you fighter or leave it to a cap ship.
Beside that the weapon tech in StarLancer is not that far as in Freespace2.

Hmmm, yes. The accent/dialect thing is very similar to The Darkening. Many's the time i've heard a russian say, "Where I go, death follows."

I think I'm going to pick it up.  It also comes with Crimson Skies (I already have that:mad: )  and Metal Gear Solid (:D )  Thanks for the help.
