It seems that all of a sudden, the veterans of the FreeSpace community are begining to drop off. Many FS fans have left, ready to leave or thinking of leaving. I know FS is about 5 years old now, but I thought the Freespace community was strong. We now have the source code project, but even that can't hold us together.
Could it be because all of the user campaigns take so long to make, due to RL interferance?
The Freespace community is slowly shedding away. Unless we get the dreaded FS3, there will only be Shrike and Venom left in two years time...
I know that I will leave the day I buy Freelancer.
The reason I'm writing this is that I've noticed that the forums (particularly the General Freespace and Freespace Modding forums) are drying up. It seems like hardly anyone is talking anymore. Raise your hand if you have an active involvement with Freespace.
[I raise my hand]
-
A couple ideas I've had...
One, have another project going along at the same time as the FSSCP (Or just have a team as part of the project) that redoes all the FS2 media that is not available for free and releases it on the web. This would mainly be for the 'base' FS2 elements, ie the interface and allow the user campaigns to make the meat of the game.
Two, the Babylon project does the above, since it's already done a lot of interface-replacement and has a number of high-quality ship designs planned, and is the most well-known campaign in the FS community
-
Well, heres my theory...
When Freespace 1 and 2 came out, the majority of people that bought these were young, you know...maybe 10-20 range. Now that we've gone five years in, the younger players are getting older, thus having more advanced things todo to complicate their past ways of computer-RL balance. This usually means having to adujust to it by cutting the gaming/online factor down.
I am currently thirteen years of age, I have about another perhaps 2-4 years before real life really starts to interfere with my being online. This is basically a way of life...usually people around 16-26 are really busy at some point, may it be school, college, going for their first job, going out on their own, etc.
It really isnt because of the game itself in most factors, its the age group that is entering an important time.

You, sir, suck!
I know that there's a good chance I'll ride the community down in flames.... or leave for other things.

Don't leave me with that image. Please :sigh:

sorry to disapoint you, but I might follow the trend too some day...
Things are dead on my campaign for now, I know it's hollydays, my PC still isn't back at 100% ( no internet, no 3dsmax ), but still, I begin to be fed up with how things are going, this might not end as I wished...
That said, it doesn't mean i'll leave the community anyway, coz even if freespace dies ( it is bond to die anyway ), HLP will most likely go on with something else.
-
I'm probably gonna stick around to very end, and speak to myself, laugh at my own jokes, argue, post pictures, ban myself and then get angry and toss my computer out of the window and discover the wonders of the outside world (IE my kitchen and livingroom)! :D
-
HLP will go on much longer than the FS Series...none of us would really be able to abandon the forums since we've been here so long :(
-
Surely you'll have no need to abandon HLP when Freelancer comes out - HLP is covering it, after all. Plus there's Homeworld 2 and all the other lovely space-based shenanigans we could want.
-
Yep, I'm damned if I'm actually leaving this totally. The truth is that when FS and FS2 came out I had so much more time on my hands than I do now, things change and as people grow up their situations change. It's sad but it's true - but I'm not leaving yet ;)
-
This brings a quote I made up from another game.
We are warriors of the battlefield, fighting a war that ended long ago, yet we do not believe that the war has ended, so we keep on fighting![/i]
It was something like that
-
I know that if I leave FS, there's no way I'll leave the HLP boards. Especially since HLP will be involving Freelancer as well.
Another thing I was trying to bring up is whether people should still create campaigns that won't be released until next year. By then, everyone would have probably uninstalled any FS related content.
The light is coming! :nervous: The end is in sight! :shaking:

YEAH! HLP Will rise again like a Phoenix out of its ashes!!!

I wasn't referring to the HLP community - I think it's still strong. Just the FS community.

Nah, you got it wrong. The career is bondage model, not streaker.
Get it right next time.
-
_bondage model_??? eh... should I ask, why? or is that a really bad question to ask?

*shakes head*
Shrike, Shrike, Shrike.... *sigh*

Why? Why not?
-
i dunno. if you're going to go for that type of thing, aren't there better ... career... er, thingies? whatever the word is. i can't think of it at the moment.
-
mmh, wasn't the new avatar system supposed to have been created to take less space? :p
-
Things are too bad yet. But rest assured when the community sinks I'm going down with the ship! *plays little bugle*
Now stop moaning about 'cos that'll just make things worse. Go code/fred/texture/model/lie/mock/titilate/ or whatever else you do. :D

And even if the HLP dies a bit, the NodeWars community will still live! :ha:

Hey, that'd be a fun career
*hides his latex bondage outfit*
-
I can' t even think of leaving this community.. too much fun stuff to read :D
-
Two words: The Babylon Project
They have some pretty amazing stuff coming up, and it definitely won't be finished for a while. I'm certain that I will play it even if it comes out in 5 years.
The original Doom still has a lively community.

I never played FreeSpace all that much. I'm in for the modding. This community falls apart, I'm not gonna stick around for the hell of it- I've already done that with one community, and it's not exactly a rewarding experience. However, should the FS user sequels ever come out, you KNOW I'm gonna be on them like nothin'... Mostly, I think it depends on what happens when Earth 2160 comes out. But that's in a while, and it's highly unlikely that enough is gonna happen to draw me away from here.
-
Well, even though I'm not really checking the FS related forums, I'm still working on MT and doing my damned best to get that thing done. Then I might get into something else, but always here at HLP...
-
Please, don't let this community die. Please. It's one of the best I've ever been in (and I have been in a lot). I don't want this one to go away. Please
It's too early to say much anyways. If we all stick together, we'll be able to ride through these troubled times.:sigh:
-
I don't think that HLP will die, at least not yet. You see, evenas the older guys drop out, we are still getting new members, like my self (I've only been here a month or so). Freespace and its community may die and vanish, but I will still make ITHOV (although it would be less than it could be) and enjoy it myself. I consider myself lucky to be part of a family like HLP, and we should stay together. We can allways change what games we play. The move to Freelancer may just be the first of many after FS. But I like this place to much to leave it, and I'll be here for quite awhile (I hope;) )
-
That's right. HLP won't die, as long as we're all still here. It's sort of a curse, you know. This same thing happened at the RBB. bluvorlorn (I got my inspiration from him) wrote the RBB Movie, and, as soon as he did, the community started to fall apart. Is it some sort of curse? I wonder...
Just, please, keep this community alive. I never thought this would happen, but I'm actually depressed and sad because of this topic. I really want to keep this place.
-
Thats right!
Don't worry, be happy!

Nodewars will NEVER die. Just take a month long vacation to create another 3 years worth of storyline...
EDIT: This place had better stay arround long enough for my kids(ugh...i hate kids, but how else am I gonna increase my sphere of influence and take over the world[kinda like the bush family did]) to hang out and play stuff like freelancer4 and ask people where they can download "Setekh's Rendering Toolbox"...If it dosen't, i'm coming after every one of your :headz: (hint hint:mad2: )

My 5-year old knows the difference between a Perseus and a Pegasus, even if he can't pronounce them very well. He made a reasonable Orion out of Legos. There's hope for the next generation :)
-
so the conclusion is...
FREESPACE LIVES!!!
(I like big words....)
-
Don't you agree that the forums are beginning to dry up unfortunately? I sit waiting for responses to my topics and various others and I'd be lucky to see one reply per forum every hour or two. Compare this with SWG (www.starwarsgalaxies.com)'s forums: 10 replies to the one topic in 5 minutes. But I suppose they're all just Star Wars fans mainly anyway... I'm going nowhere with this reply. Just ignore me.
-
diversification. people worry more about their own forums/topics, so they spend more time hanging around them, so they spend less time hanging around other people's forums/topics.

Though I've only been here a relatively short time, compared to the First Ones, I don't think that I've seen the forum die down in that time. The community is small compared to a couple of other places I inhabit, however this is when I can pull out the cliche "size doesn't matter". It's rather uncommon for me to come across threads that don't have any replies (in the non-hosted forums at least) - if you stick around you will get a response. In other forums with more traffic and users, there remain plenty of unanswered questions and unchallenged comments. And most of the time, I'd rather receive one or two responses in this forum, than a dozen in another, because the quality of posts here is quite high in my experience. Even the nonsence replies are of good quality.
Of course, as a community moves on, the First Ones will begin to move away, called onto other things. While it's not always a joyous occasion, it does happen. However it doesn't mean that they're dying or dead. New people comtinue to find out about the game, play it, enjoy it, wish to discuss it, find HLP, and become part of a happy community. To use another cliche, the forums are what you make of it. I for one don't plan on leaving, although I don't actually contribute to any projects (though I wouldn't object if there's a niche I can fit into somewhere), which I think was the focus of the original question being asked - I've forgotten after only 5min.... looks like time's up.... have to stop writing before this turns into an aimless ramble....
-
I must disagree with Pegasus V's gloomy view, or at least put myself forward as a contradiction of it. I am 23, and joined the FS community last year. I'll be starting my graduate studies this September, but have no intention of dropping out of the community.
Moreover, the number of members here on HLP is growing, and many are active. If some of the admins have happened to retire around the same time, that is no reason to think the community is in trouble. Do not let your vision be clouded: two raindrops don't make a monsoon.

Let me tell you guys´one thing about why community members drop out. My guess is that some us get involved in to mutch projects. That itslef takes up most of our time. And then there is the real life. Those who get involved in big projects get soon tired of it and drop out.
I have been around the FS community since fs2 has been released. And thats a long time. And like thunder siad i'll be damnd if leave this community now.
-
To me HLP's fate is now in the hands of Digital Anvil, Microsoft(gasp!) and Freelancer. Hell, the whole space-sim genre is riding on it.
-
in other words, we're screwed?
(j/k)
most of microsoft's games haven't been too bad...and freelancer looks verrry interesting...
-
I will of course be here to the very end even if I am the last one around. I have been with this community too long to abandon it now. ;) I do not have any doubts about the survival of HLP; it is Freespace that I am more worried about. It will probably live out this year, but I am not so sure about the next.

whoever made that is a genius. :D

How can I have more posts than an admin? Wheeeee!

Im second only to Venom in terms of non-admin post counts :D.

its very sad that FS ha to fade out like this, alot of this is in my guess is the fall of the VBB:sigh:

Now our only hope is for interplay to release it's rights for FS and for volition (or us) to be able to buy them...
But meanwhile I'm sure this community will live on.... there are plenty of younger members anyway... (and some older people, like, past college)
