This might be a stupid topic (and might be in the wrong forum), but... meh.
Who do you think deserves a mention as a legendary status of the Freespace community?
Here's my list in no particular order:
- Setekh (Artwork)
- Thunder (Community)
- Shrike (News)
- Venom2506 (Modelling)
- Kazan (Tools)
- Zylonbane (Controversy)
- Woomeister
- Bobboau
- Aldo
Oh, by the way, I intentionally missed out Carl because, well... look at the subject header. He's a Shivan!!
-
Where the hell is steak man?? c'mon now (oh wait, int eh original post steaky isn't there, but now he is on the post reply.... wierd)
well i have much respect for Setekh.. and i am also partial to thunder although i think i might have had a crush on zylonbane ;)
-
Carl isn't the only Shivan around here. :)

hey I invented A1SBCA!. But then the source code came out and my unique way of making a beam shoot through a ship was no longer needed :(
-
Aww, thanks guys - you're to kind :)
And you've forgotten the majority of the VolitionWatch staff - IceFire, Remora and Orange in particular have done sterling work for the community in various forms.
Inquisitor was there at the beginning - and it's because of him that I'm on that list at all, since he got me into websites and all that gubbins. He should definitely be in the ranks.
WildWolf should also be up there. Whos he you ask? Well he was a member of the community back in the great days of the VBB, then he was recruited by Volition to be a part of their staff. So leaving him out is a no no!
I'm sure there are others - but they're the really high praise worthy ones that spring readily to mind.
-
Ive been around in the shadows a while and i do believe these extrordinary ppl believe to be commended for their commitment to the fs universe. But for other canidates i believe you should put on some regular pxo pilots that make that atmosphere more enjoyable and keep the fs2 multi alive
-
How about Hunter from the sector? despite of of his sites problems, he's still here. He should be on the list
Ot: hey vadar_1, I might be interested in that a1sbca of yours. drop me a pm.

Do I get mention for having the longest running FreeSpace website? :D
-
No
j/k:lol:
Yeah add him to the list!
-
Dark.... probably Styxx once MT is out.
What the hell am I doing on that list...I've only been here a year or so? Bleh

What has Dark done for us in the last 4 years?
Look at all the pretty models you keep churning out! You definately deserve that position.
-
Dark pioneered model making in the first place.
None of you were around to see the early days ya youngins! You know nothing about what happened before :D

Same here.

I think Lonestar deserves a mention for his work on FRED Zone. You gotta respect a guy who provides more support for Multiplayer FS2 than :v: does...
But then again, I'm biased. (see siggy)

I caught the tail end :p
Which reminds me - Put Plasma up there as well, for being Teh Funny™ of the community back in the old days (he also pioneered renders alongside Dark - Setekh and myself came later).
-
If only I hadn't left the community and forgotten all modding and FREDing skills for a year, I might be on that list. *sniff*
Camera fades as Assassin puts hands in pockets and shuffles down the rainy road in his trenchcoat and hat, dreary music following.
-
who's he? Points up Don't leave, come back and show us newer folk your old stuff, then maybe you can go on the list.
-
I don't have any of the old stuff. I went through a year long phase of not having FS on my HD. I wasn't a pioneer in anything either, I just helped run the old Freespace Watch and Ground Freespace. *sniff*
Don't cry for me.
-
Well, if you want to get back into it, I'm running a little ... wait, people may linch me if I mention it again. ;) Send me a PM. and look at the site in my sig

That's what scares me..... I've learnt all I know over the last year or so. He's had 4 times as long as me to get better.
-
That doesn't mean he's put it to good use - we've not seen much from him lately. Personally I only credit people for what I've seen them produce - Dark was a great model maker but until I see something more recent I'll consider him as an only "was", not an "is" :)
-
Whatever happened to Plasma, anyways? I missed him, he was funny! :D
Anyways, I think HLP should put up an archive of all of this stuff, so that future FS generations can know what happened before.
EDIT: I swear, Thor, if you do, I'll strangle you! :D ;)

What did I do?;7 :nervous:
Edit: Just wait until the unmentionable has its own forum.

Hmmm.... No saviour of Capella on the list :nervous:

You can't forget the following:
Xanadu - The source of much original VW scripting when it was the Descent Chronicles and, more importantly, started the original FS1 Mission Archives. Without Xanadu, there might not have been a cohesive FS community.
Heiko Hermann - Descent Network's FS Tools Programmer. No tools, no MODs. Heiko administered the FDL, which was where all the development action originally occurred.
Patel - On FDL, he came up with a lot of initial modding techniques and fixes for sexps. He also talked me into starting mission reviews, which led to me being contacted by Xanadu and eventually becoming part of the Descent Chronicles team.
Zarathud (me!) - Back when I had free time and didn't bill at huge hourly rates, I tried to create as many tutorials about modding and mission design as possible. Those tutorials are still up at VW under "Staff" (thankfully, as I can't respond to e-mail regularly anymore). I also started the mission reviews at the DC/VW and did various editorials (including the one about the Battle of Endor syndrome when people were running at 200 MHz).
Dark - He modeled back when everything had to be done the "hard way" and we were figuring things out. He produced some cool stuff that kept the MOD hope alive in the early days.
IceFire - In the community longer than anyone I can remember and took up actual development work while I worked on tutorials.
Sorry if I'm forgetting anyone. I've been out of community for a while, but I still do check these BBs occasionally.
-
most certainly the babylon project people. That is the only total conversion to date, that has actually gotten off to a playable result.

oh yeah, and modelview!
btw, texturing-wise, I think bobboau still ownz me big time, same for Aldo. And as their models are as good as mines, well...
Anyway, dark still keeps the first place for me: look at the Gorgon, for exemple... so, thunder, even if for now it's rather "was" than "is", well... so what? legends usually belong to the past.

i don't owz you texture wise...... I owe you for teaching me about Max & mirroring, et al.
Unless you mean ownz, and that's wrong as well.

Don't think we are anymore. HLP was taking a little too long, so we're going to keep our current host, and put in a new forum.

FINALLY!
Uh, no, Terran Imperium was never finished. It was more HeX's project than mine though.
-
very nice. those people all deserve recognition, but Setekh deserves recognition for "community" because, well, it was him and Thunder (from what i heard) that STARTED hard light productions, and he was as involved in the community IF NOT MORE than Thunder.
I think Thunder and Setekh deserve 'community' recognition!
Thunder (or Shrike, or whoever)... what costs were originally incurred in HLP and have been since it opened? like the vB license...

well Thunder and Setekh saved the comunity with HLP, but they wern't the founders, before HLP there was planet freespace (later named freespace watch) and Decent Cronicles (later merged with FSW to form VW)
all those mentioned by Zarathud are the founders

Dark, Bobboau, Thunder, Shrike, Setekh, Venom, Aldo, IceFire, Kazan. Possibly Eternal One, Tomcat, Max Sterling, and Rampage. These would be my nominations.

Ahh, the days when the VBB was up and full of new and usefull freespace stuff.
-
Definately Plasma belongs up on that list. James Moores (IceWolf I think was the callsign he went by) though deserves a bit for being one of the first major pieces of Fan Fiction despite my not being a fan of his portrayal of the Shivans.
Wildwolf of course should be up there as someone who "ascended" ;)
-
So far as I know, John Hanton was the first non-V modder ever. Back before the tables were even decoded, he was tweaking the performance of ships.
I forget was his nickname was, though, so maybe he's already been mentioned. ^_^
-
Just thinking about my contribution to the community, that's all. Certainly not up to the likes of Dark or Aldo, but just a badly needed piece of work that's influenced nearly every campaign that has come along since its completion. Yes, the Freespace Port, undisputedly the pinnacle of...
*is smothered*

Infamous: Stryke 9 and Zylonbane. :D two of my favorite people.
You can't not have an0n on there though.
amd just exactly how does someone become "infamous" ?

ahem, I was in the VBB since... since... before a lot of you :p
Missing people: I think all fan fiction writers should be mentioned - they gave FS a great deal more character detail. I don't remember who wrote Beyond Laramis, but I enjoyed that fan fic and think he should be on there :p
Also, all the diligent Squadwar supporters :)
-
But I can guarantee that people like WildWolf, Plasma, and Dark beat you to it. Especially since we registered on the board before it was public :D
Ahhh the good old days. When the user count was under 100 :) (didn't last long tho!) and I was still in High School! :)
Yeah....there's alot of people who were responsible for things that still exist in a manner of speaking today.
Xanadu created the most successful FS Mission Database (today its the VW Archives, pretty much derivative but enhanced from before). The whole Review system that was so popular for a while was created by a guy called Dravis Covel. That same system encouraged a certain mission reviewer/designer to get into Derelict and create a very memorable campaign (yes, thats Kellan...with Agatheron's help). Ground FreeSpace, Ross 128, and countless other sites died...but on their ashes stands HLP and FreeSpace Watch (FSW was once Planet FreeSpace/Descent Chronicals, and previous to that, FreeSpace Command/GTA Command). Plasma wrote one of the best FS inspired stories around...and IceWolf put together the largest volume of FS stories around. WildWolf now works for Volition, I'm still here. Dark pioneered (as I said) the model creation thing...putting togehter the first fully functional fighter MOD (the ship that Venom so loves). Ace created some very short but very intense and high quality campaigns.
Dang...there' so many to mention. Can't possibly remember all of it :)
It was a good run...it continues to be. With many of the same people still here. Years later!
-
by golly Ice, you are that old? :D :D :D
-
In community terms...yes :)
In real life terms...I'm still a yougin...trying to find his way around to the next class in a life induced stupor.

so like not Rolling Stones old, but AC/DC old?

Blah, BL's hideous dialogue and rediculous plot points (some of them, anyway), will keep it off any list of good things. Thx anyway though ;)
