So there I was, installing my new Atlon 900..
I have it all set up. I press the power button, and away it goes, 10 seconds later.. it hangs....
I turn it off, then back on with the intent to change some bios settings. Before I can do this though, a huge bolt of electricity shoots out of my hard drive, hitting my leg, numbing it....
The hard drive is completely fried, everything on it gone, all my renders/scene files, everything for TAP that I had, among other things.....
So, for those of you who I was doing things for, its gonna be a while...
-
:jaw: ****! Ouch, man!
-
You alright? That is a [edited out for language].:(
-
Well, look on the bright side. At least your leg's ok. :)
-
Aww, crap..
-
I don't usually swear, but... Damn! :(
-
You should have heard me cursing....
I think I just said every curse in the english language, twice, and a few other languages as well.. plus a few I made up...
Oh yeah.. if you have me on your ICQ list, msg me so I can get you back on mine.. thats if you want me there anyway...
-
hahaha.... I guess next time you'll
a) read the manual
b) ground yourself first

a) read my goddamn post
b) think about what you just read
First... I wasnt touching the computer... in fact, I was pretty far away from it.... what hit me was electrical.. not static... something blew...
Second... I know my way around the inside of a computer.... everything was connected properly...
Third... shut the hell up...

You forgot #4: develop a sense of tact.

...note to self...when installing new processor this winter...back...up...hard drive..
-
note to self...back...up...hard drive...NOW!
-
actualy if you are grounded it will make you more of an atractive target for such an electrical arc
-
true, electrical arcs seak to grounded things, percisely because the ground is where it wants to end up...sorry to hear about your hard drive man, that sucks the big one.
-
Sounds to me like you nudged a power cord out of place or if the processor is a ZIF style(i think thay all are nowadays) you might have not locked down the lever. I'll ask my tech teacher about it tomarrow, she should have an answer...but that is the damnedest thing though...
And you didn't even touch the power supply box, right?
-
power cord was in good... so was the processor
-
That sucks so bad :( im sorry to hear that :(
-
Oh dear that sucks big time :( :shaking:
-
wasn't that HD a IBM by any (bad) luck?
-
Holy sh**! *stares at Thorn's leg*
half life barney voice: I bet that stings a bit?
-
That's... extremely bad. Lucky nothing happened to you. Was that IBM 75GXP drive?
And also, you weren't touching the computer, but still a bolt of electricity hit you... :wtf:
-
*Counts Thorn's Avatars*
Wow - a lot of people are going to be pissed.
(Not at you of course, nothing you could have done, just at circumstances in general). You didn't lose anything important did you? Non FS I mean, like a thesis or whatever, coz that would be the ultimate piss off.
-
Nope... not in school right now luckily.... did lose a resume though.. thats just irritating..
It was a Quantum Fireball Plus. 20 gig.
-
It would seem to me that something was seriously wrong for it to shoot a bolt of electricity and hit your leg...wow...I didn't think there was enough power in your computer to arc like that.
-
I'm thinking power surge.. but that would have damaged everything else too, which it didnt....
I'm clueless... all I know is I'm missing some hair on my leg and I have a 20 gig paperweight...
-
And this people is why Surge Protectors are 1337.
-
Which is why I have one...
hmm.. thats still under warranty too...
hmmmm!!
-
I bloody well hope that some other Tappers have the files, cos I lost those icons I made a few months back.
-
I'm pretty sure Pera does...
-
Good job, too.
-
damn, dont give my HD any ideas now, I alredy gave it 2 sectors of brain damage, it might attack as I put it in my new comp, so what about your numb leg

1: it's Gordon Freeman
2: Do you play online?
3: I'm DeathBringer(TFC\FA)

This looks pretty bad. My computer also messed up a week ago and has been down since then, but the problem has been localized to the graphics card and the hard drive is probably safe. I am waiting on a warranty replacement, which should be here later today or tomorrow.
-
Ouch man.
And I was just about to pm about those pics you had offered to do when I saw this thread.
Get some salve on your leg and check the box for the surge protector. (My roomie bought one and noticed it had a $5,000 warantee on it!)

I cant play online, HL got messed up and I need the CD key to get to work, and Iv tried key generators, but I need the CD
-
wow, i'm still trying to picture the arc.. heh damn that blows... yeah, live long and may you prosper off that warranty :D
-
It might be possible that the data isn't completely lost... some specialists with their stuff can maybe read fried HD's... I don't know about it but it's so. :)
Also when hard drive blows it might help to put it to the freezer, I've not tried but some have and it has made it to work again for a while. I have no idea if it would help in your case or not...

Yeah, I've actually heard of that working a number of times. Just make sure it's in a sealed container so it doesn't get all wet from condensation or anything like that.

It rattles....

You still need to be very careful if you want to do that for any length of time. The humidity inside the sealed box may still be enough to cause serious damage.
