Let's open this thread, despite having no marketing yet available for it.
This will be, I predict, the very first consensual flop that Disney produces with the Star Wars' brand.
Or, I might be wrong and it will be the best Cowboys in Space movie since Guardians 2. Wait, I'm repeating myself here.
-
I really liked Rogue One, whilst first being rather skeptical of Disney's attempt to
milk the SW franchise turn Star Wars into something similar to the MCU. I'm very, very skeptical about a Han Solo movie, and all of the reasons are in the words "Han Solo".
-
My worry is ANH basically has his arc in it. So this new movie is either going to have him a dick the entire time, or he has an arc here... becomes a jerk again and has a new arc? Weird.
-
I'm dissapointed Disney didn't choose a period in the Star Wars timeline where they could make this canon.
:nervous:

Financially, there's no way a Star Wars film is going to be a flop. Even Revenge of the Sith was the 2nd highest grossing film of the year and it had to deal with the fact that the two films preceding it were complete and utter ****e. There's too much of the "You must see it on the big screen" for even people like me who think it's likely to be rubbish to not go to see it.
Disney face some massive problems with this film. Han Solo is a hugely popular character who has to enter ANH as a self-serving dick. The only character that it's possible to see him giving a **** about before ANH is Chewbacca, and trying to make a film where only Han seems to understand the character in peril would be pretty difficult.
So I don't see how they can avoid betraying Han's character unless they make the film about why he became a self-serving dick. If they make the film about some event in Han's early life that made him only care about himself and we actually see why he ended up the way he did, that might work. It might even make for a good film.

I believe Star Wars: The Clone wars was a flop, granted that should've been direct to video.

As long as Han shoots first at some point in the movie I'm sure nerds will love it.
-
let's all see the grandiose story of how amazingly and epically Han single handedly made a kessel run in less than some ****ing parsecs, oh boy that will be so awesome and original i can't wait to see it oooohboy oooohman, and they have to show how he got his ship from lando of course man that will be glorious everything we know about this character will finally be rendered on screen aint that marvelous holy****

I actually know only this guy:

I'll just join the chorus and say that I have no idea how they are going to manage a movie that is both interesting and doesn't mess with how the character in introduced in ANH. I doubt I'll be seeing this in theater, baring glowing reviews from my friends & relatives.

Cheap but effective quick gag, I wouldn't be surprised if it made it in ^^.

I miss Stargate...

Just as a bit of an aside, I work for Wal-Mart and I used to work in the Electronics department. Back when Disney Infinity was big, we had a section for all of the characters, and I remember that whoever assigned the name in our system to the Han Solo character must have not had any contact with Star Wars whatsoever, because in our system is was labelled as "Hans Solo".
-
Oh that's just crying out for a photoshop.
EDIT: Nevermind, I forgot I was dealing with Star Wars for a sec and there was no way someone hadn't gotten there first.

Awesome!

pretty much exactly this

I think a reasonable fear is that throughout the movie, shooting first will be some kind of running gag, or worse, actually made into part of Han's character arc.
-
Agreed. Can't wait for the scene where he doesn't shoot first and gets hurt, the evil gunman telling him "you should'a have shot first, Solo" cue wink wink.

There's still some room for being clever here. He technically said that

so they might as well have someone else flying it.
Not expecting too much, but they can still make it decent.
-
Well the Pod Race was one of the better scenes in Episode I AFAIR.
After the release of this movie, maybe the Kessel Run Time Race is exactly that, what we will love about this movie?
-
(Ahem)

Well the Pod Race was one of the better scenes in Episode I AFAIR.
It was until Lucas re-edited it and screwed it up.
There's a point in the race where someone in front of Anakin crashes and in the theatrical release, he simply ducks as the debris flies over and then Shmee on the ipad looks away in an "I can't watch" moment. Then later on Lucas, thought oh hey instead of just having him duck, let's have debris smash into his pod and disconnect one of his engines so Anakin needs to get out a grabby stick and pull the engine back in or re-connect a hose or whatnot. Meanwhile his cockpit I think is spinning around uncontrollably.
Basically Lucas forgets what pacing and building tension is, and puts a moment in the middle of the race that is far more tense and dangerous than its climactic confrontation with sebulba.

It's the Kessel Run! And there's Chewbacca! Look, there's Lando omg omg
etc.

There's also this

I liked the shot of the Star Destroyer in the nebula.
Not sure why I'd want to see this movie though.
-
I expect I'll get a ticket from my sister for this flick. I am curious as to how awkward everything is.
-
I know this movie has a negative rumor mill going... and perhaps it really will be terrible. I certainly never wanted this movie.
But it just reminds me how much the new Star Wars movies just haven't grabbed me. They all feel like fan-pandering until Rian Johnson made his movie and denied me the one thing I really wanted to see. (Jedi Master Luke Skywalker being a badass Jedi and not just projecting his mind off somewhere just so we can get a double sunset death scene).
I hated the prequels... except that they showed us new parts of the galaxy. Disney has a whole galaxy to play with and we keep ending up with the same damn characters, species, and desert planets. Personally, I would have much preferred if the Rebellion had actually won and the new conflict/story was not about Empire Redux vs Rebellion Redux. But instead we get an OT rehash (kinda) and spinoffs about OT events and OT characters like Han Solo.
-
Is it just me or does the name "Solo" just sounds dumb by itself? Like "Han Solo" sounds decent but "Solo" just feels off.
-
All I hear is Jabba the Hut from that extended scene in New Hope.
Solo! Du noppa noya, Solo! (https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/28b5f262-fb66-4e45-a02e-aafd6c119a0e#HyuXH0zLUM.copy)
Solo! A sah wen booogeee! (Solo: A star wars story)
-
Trailer looks pretty cool. I'm optimistic about the SW movies after Rogue One and Last Jedi. TFA was hot trash but glad to see they're moving away from that.

Rian Johnson is getting his own trilogy that's in a new part of the galaxy and separate from the main story so, there you go.
Not sure what you mean by "being a badass jedi" either, seems a contradiction in terms.

Well it was "Lincoln" not "Abraham Lincoln", "Patton" not "George S. Patton", "Churchill" not "Winston Churchill" . . . I think it's common for bio-pics, even fictional sci-fi ones to have only one or the other name.
-
Well, I think the teaser made it seem awful, like a fanfilm with a big budget.
-

In Italian "Solo" is literally the word "alone" and "Han Solo" sounds like "they have only" (in the OT dub they changed his name to "Ian" because of it) so here it would be slightly weird regardless, at least together with the subtitle it doesn't sound like it's a half-translated sentence with a column in the middle (at least not as blatantly).
-
...(in the OT dub they changed his name to "Ian" because of it)...
Seen "LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace"?

Nope, why?

Set during Clone Wars era, an orphan ends up slipping in with a group of youngling jedi creating a nametag that says Ian, but at the end of it all he reveals that he stuck the "I" sideways, and that it's actually and "H", and he identifies himself as Han Solo.

Ah, though I have to be more precise about something:
"Ian" is how would be phonetically pronounced, officially it was spelled "Jan" because in Italian the "J" is an old signifier of a certain way of pronouncing "I", still present in some Italian names like "Jacopo".
Funny thing is that because of it Jan Ors in the Italin dubbing of Dark Forces (CTO was on a localization binge at the time, most PC games at the time were untranslated or subs only) was pronounced "Ian" because of this and the fact that the people that did the localization and dubbing didn't know much about Star Wars to the point that instead of using the official Italian name "Fener" they used "Vader" pronounced according to Italian spelling rules which was quite hilarious in hindsight.

So let's see if I've got this....slightly younger Han Solo is part of a group smuggling mind-altering substances or some other such illegal goods through a region controlled by imperious forces of law and order. There's a cargo vehicle of some kind, some other people who'll help out in various ways throughout the arduous journey, a love interest, a non-human sidekick who rides shotgun, and there probably has to be an antagonist character who will be the nemesis to our "hero" throughout the entire story. And somehow somebody will throw in some occasional comic-relief antics and/or dialogue. OH! and an integral part of the origin is somehow making a harrowing smuggling trip--in an unexpectedly short amount of time.
I just don't want to hear the song Eastbound and Down...except in a trailer remix. That's a perfectly acceptable level of humor for me.

I always thought he was an officer fully fledged until he broke chewie out of a brig during the construction of the first death star.
This looks like GoTG.

The death star bit doesn't make sense since he didn't know there were structures that big in ANH.
