Title: Graphics Phantoms...
Post by: Fineus on August 17, 2002, 04:15:46 am
Ok, so here's the weird thing.

I recently recieved my brand shiny new GF4Ti4600 from MSI, and it's everything I hoped it would be, and a little more... here's why.

When setting it up for my installed games (Freespace, Descent 3, UT and a couple of others) I ran the "detect available graphics platforms" thing as normal... D3D, Check. OGL, Check. 3DFX... Check.

3DFX? Ok, since when did the nVidia line start running in 3DFX as well? Of course I try to run Freespace and UT in 3DFX to see what happens and both games crash so I switch back to D3D and all is good again, but why would 3DFX show up on that list?

Could Voodoo be returning to haunt me? Even after removing the hardware and formatting the drive...

Calling a card 'Voodoo' just has to be asking for bad juju....

:wtf: Hmm, I have no idea. NVidia cards do not support Glide, though. Maybe it's something, but it shouldn't matter too much. Have you deleted all the registers or formatted the computer after Voodoo?

Edit: Hmm, you did format... :wtf: Strange. :p

I said I had :)

That's what's so weird, there should be no trace of the device on the system, and yet it picks up my card as supporting 3DFX Glide... I'm scared. I think perhaps the only possible reason is that the latest detonator drivers are preparing for the next line of nVidia cards which (IIRC) do support 3DFX...

Probably just a detection bug.

To get to the question at hand, have you check to see if there are any glide**.dll files on your computer, which might've found their way there after a format? Emulators for example?

Looking through the latest detonators I acquired (30.30's), I wasn't able to find any support for the NV30 in them, nor any extra files that would spark off an alert to a program looking for 3Dfx support. With the 3Dfx thing, I think that some people are getting confused between former 3dfx employees working on the NV30 and having influence on the design, and 3Dfx technologies bring incorporated directly.

Long live 3DFX! The Voodoo 2 was probably the best card ever made for the PC.

Actually... V3 was quite a good card too.

It worked at least well with all games and programs. It propably wasn't the most powerfull one but at least the compatibility was top notch :)

I miss that card...
