Title: Homeworld Trading Cards
Post by: Rampage on August 17, 2002, 04:31:56 pm
Hey,

This is Rampage on his break from writing that - short novel and making Derelict II missions (I think I'm on mission 4).  I'm now making - Homeworld Trading Cards!

It all started with this thing called Yu-Gi-Oh that my boy watches.  (He's 16 and watches a show for kids. [Moan])  I got him some of those cards and had this - wicked idea.  Why not make Homeworld cards?!

I have made about 20 some cards, almost completed with the Kushan deck, and just got started on the Taiidan deck.

I have a card here.  See if you like it.  Post comments!

I know about that copyright thingy from Relic.  I consider it to be fan-made material, like MODs.

Yes, the background is composed to two - bland colors.  No, I do not have problems with my aesthetic brain cells.  I just can't - Photoshop.  Neither am I a hedonist!  <- Just to let you know. :p

hehe, cool....

I wonder if you could do something like magic online with it, except have virtual money...

i.e...

regester, create player, get x amount of cash, play someone, get y% of their cash if you win, they get y% of your cash if you loose, regester for tournament, pay z amount of cash, get i amount of cash for winning. Spend j amount on a booster pack...etc...etc...etc...

ok...so I am allways trying to make an online game out of everything...bite me...

So the missile destroyer will look along the lines of:

When missile destroyer attacks, remove all opponents strike craft from the game.

Below is the link to some of the cards I've completed (In BMP format).

The Unfinished Kushan Deck (http://pages.prodigy.net/descent_fan/hwcard.zip)

The missile destroyer won't remove all enemy strike crafts from the field BUT it does remove your opponent's "swarm" card(s) from the field and forces him/her to return the card back into his/her deck.  Below is the Kushan Missile Destroyer card.

Coooooooooooooool!!!

*dls the Kushan deck*

*wishes he had a color ink cartridge for his printer*

*gives up and prints them in black and white*

This could be REALLY big with the HW fans...send the idea to Relic, or Sierra, or Barking Dog Studios(Cataclysm) maybe they'll like your idea!

Cor

(Still stuck on the "Sea of Lost Souls" mission in the original HomeWorld, any pointers?)

www.decipher.com

Send the idea to them, they'll ***** at Sierra and Relic about it and get the rights to make the cards.

*goes to find some card and the laminating machine*
*kicks the DOOM-Crew's ass at HW-CCG*

If it's the mission with the derelict and the "inactive ships" around it, then this is what you should do:

1.  Don't rush into your objectives.  Start to harvest nearby resources.
2.  Make sure that you have AT LEAST 20 salvage corvettes somewhere.
3.  When you're ready, send in waves upon waves of fighters on evasive tactic to attack the derelict.  It should draw fire away from the Missile Destroyer.
4.  When you're ready, send in your salvage corvettes and band-select the ships to salvage them.  Keep AT LEAST 5 repair corvettes on repair duty on the three salvage corvettes salvaging the Missile Destroyer.
5.  If you have salvaging problems, such as ships "stuck" there dead in space, spinning, just order the salvage corvettes to cancel salvaging the stubborn ship and order them to salvage it again.

HINT:  If you salvaged the Taiidan Carrier in [that mission where you first encounter a non-Turanic carrier], this mission would run a lot smoother.

hmm...shouldn't the destroyer and the ion frigate have different attack/armor stats, and I feel rather left out, but do you have the basic rules for this game?

Err... You cant salvage the Missile Destroyer, even with repair corvettes. The damn thing always targets incomming salvagers, and even if they latch on, it can still hit them and knock em off. I suggest just investing all of your resources into bombers and scouts. The scouts whirl around the missile destroyer while the bombers pound at the ghost. It eventually releases its field. The first time i did this mission i made the mistake of destroying the missile destroyer. I moved two of my own destroyers to the outter bounds of the field.. then slowly lured the MD towards my destroyers. Once it was in range, the ION Cannons ripped apart its pathetic missile system. But then the next mission those defenders annihilated me, even aftering capturing both destroyers and the heavy cruiser... damn that radiation.

On the contrary, you can!  I did!  I just reinforced about 8 salvage corvettes with 5 repair corvettes.  You got to be fast.  When the missiles punch one salvage corvette salvaging the MD, immediately order your repair corvettes (all of them) to repair that corvette.  Then shift back to another one and back and forth until the destroyer stops shooting.

Cards first, rules later.  I feel better doing it that way.  And plus, I get new ideas everytime I make new cards.  I just got this "movement" idea, which if I wrote the rule book, I would've rewritten pretty much the entire thing.

About the movement attribute, each unit in the game can move a certain "spaces" on the main game board per move by the player.
So the Ion Cannon Frigate has a MU (Movement Unit) of 3, a player with the card active can do two things:  attack an adjacent enemy unit with armor points less than the frigate's attack points or move the unit a maximum of 3 spaces on the field.

The field (right now) will be a board (paper or maybe plastic) divided into rows and columns 10x12 in game card size units.

Aye...  No.  What I mean is something similar to the proverb:  "An empty mind is the devil's workshop."

So what, the Devil doesn't need tools? Or a workbench? Or wood?

Okay, lets not diverge from the topic.  Below is the card of the first Republic Taiidan flagship "Kapella":

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Wait a minute!  I started this thread on August 17, ionfish started his on August 20.  So I HAD THE IDEA BEFORE HE (or SHE) did!  But nonetheless, unless I improve the overall look of my cards, ionfish would've be the REAL starter of this idea!

Or I could just keep this within the realm of the Freespace universe.

Forget this.  This comes straight from the Brady Guide.

Ignore the capital ships and go straight for the alien ship.  You can't destroy it and after a while you'll get a message that you're fire is disrupting the control field.  Keep firing and eventually you'll get half-a-dozen brand spanking new capships.  As a bonus if you haven't destroyed the MD you get Guided missile Tech.

Here's the Catch, you've got to send an absolute HORDE of strike craft in to do the job.  Figure about twenty of each class fighter and 30 of corvette.  Also expect to lose at least half of your attack forces.

A group of 30 scouts set on evaisve to harass the destoyer should be sufficient to distract them long enough...
20 or so heavy corvettes, and about 30 attack bombers should do the other half of the job...
