Patrick Stewart will be returning to the role of Jean-Luc Picard in an as-yet untitled Star Trek series being produced for CBS.
My nostalgia goggles are finely tuned for TNG, so I'm looking forward to this.

The Orville proved that there was an audience for this kind of Trek show. Discovery, on the other hand, attempts to mine our nostalgia for Trek while failing miserably at giving us any of the things that actually made us like Trek.

Deadline reports that Star Trek Discovery showrunner Alex Kurtzman will "oversee development" of the new Picard series, assisted by existing Discovery producers/writers James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, and Kirsten Beyer—along with author Michael Chabon, a Trek series newcomer who also wrote the script for one of four Short Trek mini-episodes coming to CBS All Access this fall.
Well, I have no idea about Chabon, but the rest of them obviously don't have a clue how to make a Trek show.

Interesting. Knowing he will be involved as Picard alone makes me more interested than anything I ever heard about discovery. I haven't even watched it, it sounds like garbage. The man is 78 but is still razor sharp with plenty of vitality.

Discovery was overcomplicated (it's whole "long twilight struggle for your better angels" didn't need all the stuff they put into it, you cut out at least a third of show and get the same, maybe a better result) and for a streaming show too much made for the Twitter-buzz, but it was not all that bad ...
The problem might still be the show-runners ... Kurtzmann esspecially is a figure who likes his "clever complication" of storylines; but there is also the questions just how much CBS will rely on what metrics to measure their ROI...
And who is betting with me that this project is "Starfleet Academy"-project they were talking about in the after-release buzz to Discovery?

Discovery isn't that bad, and I'm quite skeptical at this too-on-the-nose nostalgia cash-grab.
I'd love it to be some sort of reformed-captain detective-noir stories with Picard as a Poirot in the 24th century, filled with Jean-Luc narration-speak throughout the show. That would be as amazing as it would be universally panned by everyone. Except me.

If it's actually good I don't mind how much nostalgia or cash they grab.
I'm wondering what Picard will actually be doing though. He turned down the Admiral stripes at least once that I can remember so idk maybe he's a grumpy old man growing wine in France. Which I would pay money to watch. And the ****ing studios know this. They know Trekkies would gladly pay to have Sir Patrick take a dump in their hand and call it ice cream. I certainly would.

Should probably keep him as a background character, don't think he should be center stage. I'd actually be more excited if Janeway or Sisko returned

I'm wondering what Picard will actually be doing though.
They could be following the common fanterpretation of Picard being a parental figure (which would make Insurrection and Nemesis stories about his midlife crisis, explains there more actiony bits :D ) and go on to have him now be grandfatherly mentor to a new crew... A bit like Kirk in the Wrath of Khan, but in a more appropriate way of grandfathering for Picard...

I don't know if there is reasonable room for Sisko to return - I like the character and how Avery Brooks protrait him.
However What you leave behind and the rest of the final season of DS9 made it pretty clear that his story is done: While during the final goodbye Sisko is talking about the plan the Prophets still have for him, part of his character arc already sets up that he would be settling down on Bajor with his new wife and kid; his roles in the story as mentor to the junior officers of Deep Space Nine is furfilled, Jake is long an independent person who can continue on his own, the conflict about his postion as Emissary is resolved, and his struggle against Duhkat brought to an end. Actually the only meaningful story that would be left to telll is for him to return from where-/whenever he is with the Prophets and get the retirement he had planned - but even the way his depature is set up is so as to say that if that happens there will be little complication to it.

Picard enters a worm hole that transports him back in time and he switches bodies with Kirk. Picard as Kirk for the remake of origional Star Trek ftw..

Yes, he is credited as writer on the first two Kelvin-timeline movies

I just personally never wondered what Picard (and gang?) were doing 15 years later. TNG wasn't my favorite but still. I know everyone likes to crap on Discovery but I'm like "Tell me new stories. I don't need to hear from these same two time periods over and over"
