Is it just me or does the Terran dropship from starcraft bear more than an uncanny resemblance to the GTB Athena from FS1? They both have a similar shaped hull, have the same anhedral tailplanes, it's frightening.
-
as long as we are on this subject....did anyone else notice that the new star wars has a ship that bears an almost exact resemblance to a Union class dropship from battletech?
-
Yes, the bog spherical one?
BTW, this chat room you pm'd me about, how do I get to it.
-
just copy and paste the link into your address bar

no u twit that was the ball section of a Droid control ship, look at the top of it. and the dropship thing? comon SC was made before FS1, or FS2 so theres no point to this post.

SHHH!!!! if you don't want to partake in this discussion or don't believe in it, then go away please!
he didn't make the topic "The GTB Athena copied the Starwars Dropship!!!" this topic is to discuss resemblances between Freespace and other games (well it's evolved to that now :) lol)
and besides, Starcraft was released in 1998 wasn't it? wasn't FS1 released that same year?
-
Great minds think alike.
-
any chance of some pics for anlysis?
-
Yes, the Athena and the dropship look quite similar. The Dropship just adds two fat compartments on the side for cargo.

Not really.
I thought Starcraft was 1999, anyway.
BTW, the music in Starcraft doesn't suit it at all, it sounds more like SimCity 3000.
-
 So true, so true... Not to mention it's bad quality. The Protoss music was most annoying. Most people could've used the music as relaxing symphony music
-
ok does anyone remember seeing a few of these on the ground in episode 2, attack of the clones?

Yes, in fact I do. Are those the huge ships that start trying to escape, and then they get shot down by huge missiles?

isn't that a shot from MW2:Mercs?
-
and there's the clincher ;)
-
heh, give em a few more years, and they'll all look the same, becuase their all copying eachother...
-
That's a droid control ship.
-
I li_ked the starcraft musics, they're cool, they're different. nobody complained about the homeworld "relaxing" musics, that's strange, no?

no it's not... that round thing that got shot down with those missile batteries at the end of Episode 2 was a STARSHIP...
a droid control ship is like a three quarters of a circle with a ball in the middle.
looks like this:
they are Trade Federation Warships:

Oh... and did anyone notice that that star wars creature (green, made a screeching noise in the arena that was after Obi-Wan) was an exact copy of the Zerg Lurker?
don't believe me? check this out:
http://www.blizzard.com/broodwar/units/lurker.shtml
-
Starcraft Also uses a few direct, yet not too important lines from StarWars ANH. I think its like Terran Mission Four in the installation. Enemy Marines "Let's Blast em'" and civilians' "You Rebel Scum".
Not to mention some of the protoss units responses :D

Yup, it was a starship. More specifically, a transport ship, not a warship
-
whataya' talkin' bout' stealthy? The Ball/Spheres/Cicles like starships were the Tradefederation Command Module thingies that would fly into space and connect with the other part of the ship, at least from my understanding. Someone head-over there (http://www.starwars.com) and find out
-
too late, did it myself
enjoy (http://www.starwars.com/databank/starship/tfed_battleship/index.html)
edit: Just realized this doesn't really help us... hmmmmm

are you talking about this?
That's definately a warship. call it what you will: warship, battleship, whatever... it's still not a transport!
EDIT: if you're talking about those things that tried to get back into space but Yoda ordered them shot down (those big sphere looking things) then yes, they were transports
-
ok the pic i posted is not a droid control ship. It's not even from the star wars universe. So, for the infantile egomaniac who likes to call people twits....that my friend, is a union class dropship....battletech, 1984. The shot is indeed taken from mechwarrior 2 mercenaries.

i already said it wasn't a droid control ship...
that picture you posted (http://www.denofwolves.org/aship.html) looks really similar to those starships that were taking off at the end battle in the movie. remember when they attacked it with their missile batteries?

don't roll your eyes at me punk! :) lol
yeah, i thought you were talking about those ships that were orbiting Naboo in the beginning of Episode 1
-
If you follow this link within the Starwars Data base.
http://www.starwars.com/databank/starship/tfed_droidcontrolship/index.html
It does indeed say that the center section of the droid control ship is detachable from the main section meaning that the ships at the end of Episode two could have been the central section, though it does not actually say.
And as far as them looking like dropships from Mechwarrior, a famous artist, i belive it was Leanardo DeVinchi but i'm not sure, once stated that good artist copy, great artists steal.
And i think Starcraft and Freespace were both released in 98 because i remeber talking about them with my buddy george in biology sophomore year, and i graduated in 2000 putting sophomre year around 97-98.
-
While on the subject of battletech.
Has anyone played aquitaine.wav at double speed? It sounds a hell of a lot like mechwarrior!
-
k the trade federation warships were converted Transports. The "Ball" in the middle, from what i understand is the "Command Bridge". This "Command Bridge" was added on by Lucas. The original design was a sacer with engines on one side.
The best comparision i can think of is The Saucer Section of the Enterprise - D from Star Trek The Next Generation
-
Look, I have the cross sections book for EP1, the big ball in the middle is the reactor core, the droid control ships have many antennae, the war freighters are exactly the same but without antennae.
-
k, but they are more than just a giant reactor, i mean they were basically full blown starships in EP. II and on Starwarsdotcom, Lucas also calls them a "Command section"

Actually in the movie you can see the droid control ships and the "balls" joining back together as dark-lord-whatever's sail ship leaves orbit, so it is star wars canon. And yes, there are a lot of similarities between differend sci-fi art.
-
Odd don't you think? We started with a thread about FS2 and StarCraft and we came out with Star Wars. :wtf:

This is indeed a :wtf: situation, thus(http://grahambeverley.freewebspace.com/bigwtf.gif)
