OK...seeing that I still can't get the hang of texturing. I mean, I can't stick anything on a ship correctly, I don't know how to do the "heirarchy," and I can't do anything else to get a ship into FS, I'm about ready to give up :sigh: I can still model, sure, but I can't do anything else, which renders the models useless, colorless pieces of junk. I think I'll stick with FREDding, something I can do moderately well, unless someone can help me :o. If anyone wants my DXF of my Battlecruiser, just PM me or post here. You can do whatever you want with it, but atleast give me a bit of credit for actually making the model. :blah:

What modelling package do you use?

Well...if what you mean is the programs I use, I use Blender and Truespace 6. Since, I haven't got farther than that, I haven't gotten to using the other programs necessary :blah:

Ooh! You've got one version of TS better than me! :D:D
But the hierarchy in TS is so easy to do. :)
The easiest way is to do it is to initially follow Rampage's post-modding manual. :)
-
But, alas, all the tutorials out there are designed for the older versions of TS. Even though it's a newer version, it doesn't make it much easier to use. It just has a lot more confusing buttons
-
Well, I managed to follow that tutorial with TS5...
-
Does TS6 come with trueview? If so you don`t need to worry about all the confusing heirarchy stuff. Just drag and drop the turrets lods etc into place in the trueview window.
-
Not just about heirarchy, I still can't even UV map the ship :sigh:
-
It's easy to UV map - just select 'cubic UV' from the buttons at the bottom. As for texturing - you're on your own I'm afraid, I can't texture, but I can model. :)
-
AS, don't feel bad about not being able to texture. I'm practically in the same situation. Personally I'm at the point where I have UV maps and is ready to draw the map. Only I suck rather badly at anything 2d (3D?), but I try...
If the model is good enough, someone will find a home for it and somebody to finish it. :)
It's a community thing. :)

Well, I guess texture has come upon different definitions, and it seems I've been using the wrong one :nervous: I can't even get a single texture map onto a side of my ship correctly. The model is still up for grabs if anyone wants it :blah:
-
*Buries face in hands*
You mean you can't even get a texture of any description onto the ship?
-
Yes, that's how utterly pathetic it is, but alas, I can't do jack :wtf:
-
There should be a 'paint' button at the bottom. (You may need to press and hold to select the right part) and it's fairly easy to get used to.:)
-
i don't know bout newer truspace versions, but in 5 you can click the trash bin in the bottom left corner and a huge slab of buttons will appear. every button ts has as far as i can tell. then you have a tiny description of what it does/it's name in a dialogue box (which for me is on the bottom)
from that you should be able to find the material editor.
get your .bmp textures into the truespace texture folder with explorer and then add all of them to the texture library by opening the the library and selecting the very first default texture (for me it was a "caligari" texture) and click on the preview in the "colour" extention window from material editor.
a new window opens with previews of all the textures in the texture folder. right click any texture and click "add all to library". this will add all the textures found in that folder to the library. you can then use them by opening the library and selecting one.
to set a uv map for a model, look for a button that has a blue and white checked pattern on some type of object (a cube for cubic mapping) it in the slab of buttons. click it and you will then be able to apply textures.
hope this helps, but in my opinion, the best learning method is fiddling untill it works. :)
-
Fiddling around? How the hell do you think half of us learnt trueSpace, or indeed modding? :D:D
-
well, that's true. :D
someone (experienced) should really make an updated tute for freespace watch. that's what put me onto modding, i think a lot of other people will have the same tale. :)
-
Or even better, someone should make a trueSpace based fighter creation tutorial, complete with how to UV map WITHOUT something like lithunwrap.:)
-
AND, not only a Fighter tutorial, but a larger ship tutorial, that is complete with instructions on turrets, heirarchy, converting, and tabling. :D
-
Somebody get Bobboau or Dark in here!;7

And that someone is ME!!!! Well, when I get my Truespace copy...
-
my TS uvmapping is all screwed up. I make a map in lith, and I load it into TS, and its not aligned at all...wah...

Does that mean you'll take my Battlecruiser and make it into a full-fledged ship? That is, after you get your TS copy...;)
-
Ooh! Who else saw that coming a mile off? :D:D

Why not??? It will take some time until I get TS (damn "friends" that say they get me everything and then I wait a century for it...), but sure why not?? :)
But I must warn you, I can only UV map, specially capships (I still have to practice a lot on fighters...), I can't make textures... yet... ;)
