April's theme is old school. Whether your educational term wraps up this month (next month?) or not, now is as good a time as any for a throwback! Degauss your CRT monitors and have a think: what does "classic" means to you in a Freespace context? Have FUN or ELSE :D
The rules are:
1: No HUD! (Jump nodes are ok though!)
2: Images must be presented as they would be as seen with only the FSO engine rendering the image. Remember that these entries help to show off what the engine can do for new players! So that means no after the fact photoshopping (except for cropping), and no external shader programs (reshade and the like). No lens flares, contrast shifts, colorizers, etc.
3: Max 3 entries per person!
4: Again, these screenshots are a way to promote Freespace and the FSO Engine - let's keep it in good taste.
Use the screencap script to help you take that perfect shot!
Scoreboard for this year:
Nightmare: 1
Colt: 1
MitoPL: 1

Nope. :D

Nope. :D
I'd wonder why you hadn't questioned that there before since it's been there for a while now. ;)
-
Because it would cost me the January win? :warp:
BTW, can't we drop the 3 entries rule?
-
Would you want people dumping the entire contents of their screenshot collections here all at once? :P
-
As long as there's no HUD I would be fine with that. :D
The Celebration of FS thread has sadly been dead for a while, so why not show of tons of screens?
-
Then why not empty your folders there, but take the best parts to here? Besides, look at this from the jury's viewpoint, how would you choose a winner out of dozens of screenshots?
-
Nah, I was just hoping that more screens is = more interest. :nervous:
Also, as long as there's a theme you probably won't get a deluge of entries.
-
April's theme is old school.
Looks like I chose the right week to "do stuff" - this month's release will be quite old school. :D
BTW, can't we drop the 3 entries rule?
It would certainly help to be able to post more entries - esspecially when the theme is quite broad.
EDIT: April Fools Prank removed.
-
Software renderer FTW!
Edit: To clarify, it's not FSO but vanilla FS1 and I have not even taken the screenshot myself (taken from :v:'s old webpage IIRC). So don't take it as a serious entry.

Thanks, guys - 3 screenshot rule is there for good reasons, as some mentioned above. As much as people might have lots of great ideas, realistic judging requires a limit. A flood of entries from prolific creators (unintentionally! but) sways the proportion of attention I can pay to everyone's entries.

Well well, here we go.

Pulling out from a CAS attack. If you look closely, you can see one of the still-standing tanks.
I know HUD shots are not allowed but this one just looked so cool to me that I wanted to post it regardless. Obviously not as an entry, just something I found cool.

Old school?
Yes, this should do nicely:

And without HUD:

Really highlights those beautiful retail Arcadia textures

Man, I just took a good long look at that one, then looked back at the other shots. Utterly amazing how far this game has come along.
Cool shots also!

Sticking with the sub-theme "what you first encounter is old school"

The PVF Anubis (here in Hammer of Light-colors, from Light of Antares) is the most old school enemy I can think of - shooting them down since the day I first had to protect the GTC Orff.

Thanks, man! I can only hope I get an upvote from HLP_Prophecy, too! ;7

Sorry guys, need a bit longer to judge entries! Great work all around
-
When we finally get a high-detail Demon, the current design is gonna look real outdated, real fast.
-
I asked about it recently on the FSU board... chances that it happens are VERY tiny... :(
-
Reminder that I'm looking for someone to take over screencap contest management/judging! Would immensly appreciate applications. Contact Axem for permission first!
And the winner is... Colt!
This shot is the classic of classic matchups - the two OG heavyweights, Orion and Typhon, duking it out. The relative sparsity of the scene makes it feel like something you'd see in an FS1 mission - but with the added bonus of showing off some of the slick new hi-def textures that the community has produced over the years.
Probably the hardest contest I've judged, so many great entries. Some of them would have been sure winners under a wide range of other themes. :)
-
Woohoo!
I asked about it recently on the FSU board... chances that it happens are VERY tiny... :(
An updated Demon for me is my #1 wish, and tied with the Myrm getting a modeled cockpit.
-

Let's make more campaigns featuring the Demon, doing cool stuff (https://youtu.be/0ZF7lSBJ2Hg) - create some urgency and motivate those modelers!
-
I, for one really like featuring the Demon.
- It's got missile launchers, which can be reconfigured to launch all sort of stuff (also a reason I like Vasudan destroyers)
- Thanks to its large health pool, it's naturally quite resilient and can get involved in longer fights without needing to break out special hitpoints and/or extra tough armor types
- Related to that, its big beams are among the toughest turrets in the game
- It's not overkill-powerful compared to the Ravana due to how its beams are set up (although since it pack LReds, it's still kill-powerful, but hey at least you've got more than 15 seconds to deal with it)
- It's got a pretty good turret coverage, so buffing up its AAA capabilities is fairly easy and effective, compared to Orions, Hecates and Typhons
-
It's not like the Demon wasn't a good ship, just... it is cursed... :shaking:
Often, the poor modders that tried to HTL this ship disappeared, either for a long time or entirely.
