Since I've heard numerous and wildly differring opinions about Pearl Harbor, I wanted to take a poll and find out what you all think. So please, don't just look at this thread and move on if you've seen the movie, it only takes a second to vote.
Also, if you haven't seen the movie, don't vote! :)
I'm not including options such as "Hated 1st half, liked 2nd" simply because I want to know what your overall opinion is, not what parts you liked/didn't like. :D
-
Plot-wise it sucked monkey-balls.
SFX wise it f00kin 0wned.
-
I voted even though I haven't watched it. Just because you didn't want me to. :p
-
Well thought out, slaps An0n, has enough lovey dovey stuff to keep the females interested and enough action to keep they terminator freaks interested. Good acting as well. However it is kinda long for a lovey dovey/ action movie.
Overall I give it a total of 3 1/2 stars out of 5.
-
I'd give it 5 stars. All Ninja. Right in it's intangible face.
-
I liked the attempt at making a love element, but would rather have had a REAL story told in the baground of the battle. Instead of just showing how real people fought and died, why not also show us how they lived? Unless that triangle was actually based on a real event... then it was an awesome movie!
-
Never seen it, but from all that I have heard, it appears to be a crap movie in the same manner that all the others are. Tora! Tora! Tora! is the definitive movie on the pearl harbor event; this probably sucks compared to that one. :p
-
Yea I liked Tora! Tora! Tora! better...but the little boy and the dude that screwed his friends girl!!!! It makes me want to cry!!!!
-
10 minutes action.. 2 hours chick flick...

CP, Tora! Tora! Tora! got hammered by the critics. It did poorly exactly because it had no story. Yeah, it was a close-to-exact rendidtion of what actually happened at Pearl Harbor, but it wasn't an entertaining story. People were expecting to be entertained and what they got was a not-so-interesting documentary.
At least, so I'm told. I never saw Tora! Tora! Tora!
But I did see Pearl Harbor and I did enjoy it.

well, my suggestion for how to make pearl harbor a good movie:
A) if in theatre, walk out for the first hour, then go back it ;)
B) if on tape, fast forward to the bombing scene
The first half is a chickflick, middle is the good part, and end is just...poorly done.

Yes, that is what I have heard about it, which translates to "it's crap." :D

Actually, I found it quite interesting; it is true that they could have added in a bit more on the political situation (especially on the Japanese side), but there was still enough of it to put it well above the other movies out there today. One thing that this one really got right was to not focus on some insignificant individuals (only the ones at the top), but rather on the movements of the society as a whole. This is the thing that I have heard of any other movie getting correct. Anyway, it was far, far more interesting than any stupid love story could ever have been. :p
-
I dunno about you guys, but i found the PH bombing scene quite entertaining...though the rest was downhill from there
-
I liked it, so did my wife.. Like the titantic the movie consisted of 2 VHS tapes that lasted about 3 hours... Id see it again to, can`t speak for anyone else but I think it is a must see:)
-
PH was the only movie ever I walked out on when I was watching it in the theatre... :nervous:

Such wise words....
Yeah, overall, Pearl Harbor was gawdawful. It was cool when the planes flew over and blew everything up, but that didn't offset the fact that Josh Hartnett and Ben Affleck were in it together. Basically, if you're a girl who's out to watch those two get killed, then see the movie. Otherwise, save your money and go watch Goldmember or something funny. ;)(Of course, maybe in a sick perverted way, watching those two get killed is funny.)

The only movie I ever walked out on was Tim Buron's A Nightmare Before Christmas.
I HATE MUSICALS!
I know that Josh Hartnett dies in PH; does he die or live in Black Hawk Down? I wanna see that movie, but I haven't had the chance yet.
-
Why, from canvassing opinions to revealing the plot twists in just a few easy steps. :p

No, not in BHD.
I found Tora! Tora! Tora! interesting, but yet again I find much of history interesting.
-
Ok, cool results, actually. It reveals more than you know... ;7
Now for the next public opinion question (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,9610.0.html)...
-
Pearl Harbor was OK. It wasn't a fantastic movie, but it wasn't piss poor either. Some parts were pretty damn funny, like when Raif was asking that chick out. :D Then he opens the bottle and hits his nose...again! (I winced BIG time when I saw that! :p) Then there was the dude with the eyedrops trying to help his buddies get laid. :D
It got a little boring after that till the bombing scene at the harbor...then it got downhill from there. It leveled out at the bombing of Tokyo, and went downhill again at the end.
I give it a 2 out of 5.

An appaling piece of cinema, one badly contrived scene of melodrama to the next stilted peformance by actors giving of thier best "what the feck am i doing in this POS movie" skill.
The director (Bay) does the action scene well but the non-action scenes are dire. As a budding historian and a British person i find a lot of the uber-patriotic flag waving to be grating and the few scenes that the British are in or mentioned we are made to look like were inept and that we couldnt have won the Battle of Britain without one ace pilot!
The scenes i did like however were those shot from the Japense side, fairly giving us an understanding of why they attacked and are tension building with great cinematography.
So overall its a crap 2 hours of condescending bollocks with a good 40 minute fight then a completely pointless addition of the Dolittle raid. Oh and the ending narration (by a British actor no less) makes me grind my teeth down.

Ending narration? I don't remember this. What was the ending narration and who was the British actor who did it?
-
The only narration I recall is by Ben Aflec talking about his son....

Not to derail this topic, but this reminds me of a quote I once heard:
[q]"My greatest fear is that no one will remember me after I die."
- Some dead guy[/q]

i loved it!
it's not the kind of movie you can watch over-and-over, like other movies (i.e. X-men, Behind Enemy Lines, etc.)
but i mean, sure, maybe they did focus a little too much on the 'love' aspect of it, but if you watch the 'bonus material' on the DVD, you'll see that it took them MONTHS to do like 2 minutes of the action sequence. If they did more action, it would've taken years and years and a massive budget to make :)

look at Titanic... didn't it win like more awards than any other movie? and i'll bet most people here think it sucked!
lol

I meant actress, Cate Blanchet's "America grew stronger" thing at the end it makes me want to put a bullet in my head.

You mean Kate Beckinsale. Cate Blanchett was a different actress. (Wow, Kate Beckinsale is British? I knew she used a British accent in "Serendipity" but I thought it was just affected for the movie...)
Yeah, the PH speech at the end was pretty cheesy, but it seemed to fit.
Actually, alot of stuff from the '40s were really cheesy: the music, the clothes, my father... ;)
-
Arse damnit i have trouble with those 2, Beckinsale is English Blanchette is 1/2 Canuk.
