www.gog.com has it on the front page being given away for the next 48 hours.
I know you guys already have it, but it's still worth mentioning.
-
Highlight please~ :)
E. Just for 48 hours? Meh...

If I understand it correctly, anyone who gets it within these 48 hours can keep it forever

Posted a Knossos attract thread (https://www.gog.com/forum/freespace_series/youve_got_fs2now_get_20_years_of_updates_with_one_click) to hopefully get some conversions. Bump it, post memes, whatever you got.

Snagged it! I finally have a legit digital backup to my original CDs.
-
My original CDs of european release lies carefully sealed and secured from high temperatures, humidity or any other risk of CD degrading. It will happen one day, so it's good to have reliable backup when that day finally come.
It reminds me that my current installation has about 15 years o__O, only cloned one or two times when I moved to new HD.
-
...Godamn it, I had to pay almost 10 bucks for this.

...Godamn it, I had to pay almost 10 bucks for this.
Psh, a lot of us paid $50. :p
-
30-40 quid when it released
-
Still better than to have paid for ST. :(
-
I paid for that too. No regrets 👍👍
-
I regret every cent of it, even though it was like 5 bugs. If I handed the money directly to DaveB I wouldn't mind, but I doubt he or anybody else from :v-old: benefitted.
-
People benefit by the fact it's easily available and has an active community. How are newbies supposed to get it otherwise?
-
Well that only helps if newbies know they don't have to pay and can have an enhanced version of it~
-
Let me say it another way. For many years the only way to get FS was for exorbitant amounts on eBay, or via Home of the Underdogs, or via sketchier methods. Having it for just $5 on GOG is ideal. And this free giveaway is even sweeter.
-
But there's no way we can just hoard a million licenses, or? :(
-
Correct. If they don't get it for free now, they will need to pay for it.
-
Too bad. :o
-
Too bad. :o
I mean, like- I wouldn't say that a sale for the game that this forum is dedicated to is like, a bad thing. . . .
I got FS2 from GoG after my dad saw me play SSZ and he suddenly remembered that Freespace was a thing and he looked it up and found FS2 on GoG.
-
Sure, but saying "OK, get this 20 y/o game you probably never heard of, then come back to use the cool stuff we made here" isn't as exciting as providing the entire overhauled game files for free, so instead of FS2 base + MVP + FSPort you'd some FSComplete that you can get with 1 click.
-
Isn't that exactly what Knossos is? (Aside from the main game of course)
-
Well it is the 2nd best solution.
-

Back when we used to *ahem* acquire FS2, hip63 made the FreeSpace SCP DVD, as well as The Babylon Project DVD (as TBP was pretty large in its own right). It was a one-click installer with a legit spalsh screen and the works, just like any AAA game from back then. 'twas schweet!
-
Unfortunately that's only possible with TBP these days. :(
-

Nah, you could do it with FreeSpace as well, you'd just have Knossos do its thing from the DVD and ask for the retail data. It's completely possible should the coders decide to do so, though I'm not sure why they would (perhaps for those with no Interwebs access or dial-up?).
-
Oh, was the SCP DVD w/o the original game files then?
-
I can't imagine a world where the game only being available from a relatively-obscure fan site or barely-alive torrents is preferable to it being available from multiple mainstream digital game retailers, one of which is literally giving it away right now. I remember those dark days. None of us want to go anywhere near them again.
Also I'm not sure when the thread of this conversation switched from "regretting spending money on Silent Threat" to "regretting spending money on FS2."
-
Heh I just said that it's more difficult to promote mods for a 20 y/o game when you have to go somewhere else to buy it first.
-
I'd say the exact opposite is true: how can we promote mods if people don't know that the game exists in the first place?
-
Making them standalone?
-
GOG has far larger reach than anything our community does, so this is probably on net better than being able to give the game away for free. They, after all, have a marketing budget.
-
Yeah that's probably another factor. At least it seems that this distribution for free brought some people to discord.

...in regards to a popular site (GOG in this case) having this giveaway. Freespace family growing is always good.
On that matter, I got a few friends to get it too.
-

No, it had the files as we were ok with distributing it back then. I was saying we could make a DVD now with no problem; just ue the same verification process Knossos currently uses.
-
Ah, OK I thought it had. Making a DVD would make everything more complicated without any gain.

The singular case where it might make sense (no Internet / dial-up) would be better served by incorporating something like a "Download for later" function into Knossos' setup routing to put it into a portable mode where it downloaded all necessary files into its setup directory for later offline use.
-
Sounds reasonable to me, but isn't it already possible to DL as much as you want and play later?
-
For example, your desktop is at home with no or dial-up connection. You are at the library or an Internet cafe with a USB stick. How would you get Knossos to install FreeSpace SCP + mods onto your home desktop currently? Let's also say that installing new programs on the computer is administratively disabled.
So, you'd need a portable download-only mode.
-
Making Knossos completely portable has been on my TODO list for ages. However, you can already copy&paste the Knossos library (the folder where the mods are installed into) to another computer, install Knossos there and select that folder. It should recognize the folder and allow you to launch any mod installed there.
A bit late but this is what the giveaway did to Knossos' download servers:

Keep in mind that that's only one of the three servers and downloads are distributed randomly... so take that times three and you can figure out how much traffic we got. For those curious what the (un)cache bandwidth means: The graph is from https://cf.fsnebula.org which goes through CloudFlare. The cached traffic was served from CF's servers and the uncached traffic came from my server.
And yes, we had a peak of 1.32 TiB in a single day there. A total of 4 TiB across all servers. I guess the preparation for a second coming of the Steam release paid off? I haven't seen anyone complain about broken downloads or download speeds.
-
Cool!
-
Yeah, this definitely looks really cool. Also we've got to notice that lately quite a few new community members showed up on HLP Discord, too.
-
Another thing that could have bumped that a bit was that I posted about The Babylon Project and 400 or so people liked the post. I included the link to Knossos to get the game.

If my calculations are right, that would be the equivalent of almost 600 MediaVP downloads! I think those preparations definitely paid off.

Awesome!

That's pretty nice too! :)
