Two low priority ships have been released to the public. These ships are unpainted but are uv mapped and supplied with template textures and reference material. The hope is that someone from outside the Babylon Project's normal team can step up to the plate and paint up these ships. This can be done by editting the template textures using some graphics package such as Paint Shop Pro and viewing the results using some 3D viewer program such as 3D Exploration. No truespace work is required.
The first ship is the Raider Battlewagon:

As featured in Thirdspace. The Raiders' secret weapon, intended to give the Raiders enough firepower to hold their own against a cruiser. Although as evident in the movie, not against a sizable portion of the White Star fleet. It's generally accepted to be a converted Narn Bulk Freighter.

The second ship is the Raider CNC Transport / League Base
(http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/babylon/Screens_Misc/Screens_IPAndrews/raidercnctransport.jpg)
As featured in the first regular episode of Babylon 5, season 1's Midnight on the Firing Line. A base of operations for the Raiders found hiding (somewhat stupidly) in the middle of a fast moving asteroid field. Despite the name it doesn't look like it would be able to move very far under it's own power. More like a stationary star base. It appears to have Narn/Drazi markings on it so it's probably an older League of Non Aligned Worlds base. It's cute anyway.

We're looking to the public for help painting these ships because all our regular texture artists are busy with other higher priority projects. These ships are quite low on the list and aren't going to appear in the mod any time soon without extra help. On the other hand, if someone steps up to the plate they'll be in the next release. Which would mean the Raiders are fully kitted out as a fighting force.
As a side note: keep an eye on The Babylon Project at the moment. The team have made lots of progress in the last few weeks with many projects being completed. Look out for some awesome pictures of the Vorchan, Sentri, G'Quan, and Frazi's facing off over (what I believe is) Centauri Prime. Also, bear this in mind. They've got more done than they're letting on ;)

I'll give it a shot, but I'll have to watch those episodes first. (I have all of bab5 on my computer)
I am gonna watch it from the begining to the end (s1-s5)... So it might take some time. I'll let you know when I get started..

battle wagon is in thirdspace and the transport umm i donno :/
-
If someone finds Ashrak's brain, please mail it to him. Postal charges will be very small.
-
well here's the transport, its not finished yet (just the turrets to do). What do you think, do i need to add more detail and "noise" to the textures? Having only ever seen B5 when i was bout 5 years old, i have no idea what it should look like except for the reference pic. So r there any pics of the turrets?

That's not at all bad for a first attempt. Here's the reference pic for those who haven't seen it.

Because there's so little reference there's a degree of creatively educated guesswork needed here to make the thing look nice. In answer to your question, there are no turrets on the original. We added them to make the model more useful to mission designer. So just use your imagination.
I am wondering how some kind of light circluar panel effect would look on that ring under the main pattern. Also, perhaps 2 floors worth of window lights on the middle side of the arms and maybe, just maybe, around the outside edges of the ring and bridge disc.
Hopefully some of the Babylon Project team will be around shortly and come up with some other ideas. Without any doubt, good first shot though. Not at all shabby.

ok finnished (unless u think anything needs altering).
Any better? i made it look a bit more worn.

Wow! An awesome start! Nice to know we can count on you people around here, it helps us out alot!
My suggestion would be to overlay some sort of metallic panneling texture on the hull. Use the generic B5 stuff to make it really fit in...I think if you do it very lightly, it will preserve the overall colors but give it that detail at closer range and that variety at longer range.
Keep it up! And since its seen only once, be a bit creative. Make it look like it works...and use other B5 ships as reference.
-
ok, good ideas:yes: . I impressed myself with how it came out because this is the first texture job i hav ever tried!
-
How did you do it? With a UV mapper no doubt...
-
it was all uv mapped 4 me, i just used photoshop.
-
Oh....
-
We're making this rediculously easy for people with texture skills to do these. All UV mapped and ready to go :D
-
great job
-
ok, new pic. I added a pannelled texture and added even more ware and tear. What now?

Just downloaded the battlewagon and it came up with multipul errors on trying to extract the files. It says:
CRC Error: File ... Could not be extracted correctly.
Any chance this could be fixed so i could start texturing?
-
that need to be improved ..contact me on ICQ ASAP 14798797

erm...i have mIRC and i dont really know how to use it, can any1 emliten me as to where to put the number?
-
It's compressed using the new version of WinRAR. It's not quite compatable with the old one. Someone in the Babylon Project team (give everyone a wave Haderak) upgraded to the new version so I had to upgrade to read his rar files, so you have to upgrade to read mine :).
Seriously, the new version of WinRAR will uncompress it fine, and it's probably worth having.

ok, i was using winace anyway. It can read the old rar format but apparently not the new one.

www.icq.com download it and register as user. the u will look for Add /Look User and place that number

Is there any way to make that panel effect under the cammo pattern on the ring and bridge saucer circular. Going around the ring and around the saucer. They look a little odd square. Like they're going at angles they shouldn't be going at. Perhaps make the effect a little lighter. Although the addition of the effect does add greatly to the detail and B5-ness of the model.

Yeah, i know it looks a bit off, i'll attempt making it circular later but it'll take a while.
As for ICQ i keep gettin random people contactin me askin if i wana see thier site. so im gona stick with good ol' msn messenger. if u need to contact me it's [email protected]

There may possible be a circular sweep effect hidden somewhere. Paint Shop Pro has something along those lines. Then again Paint Shop Pro is a bit bonkers.

Very nice! For the "what now" part, put some panelling/detail on the arms and central metal parts (the outside looks fine - if a little light).
Great job though :)
-
Ok, here it is with circular panelling on the ring. I think the top saucer looks ok without doing it on that. Also i think the centeral metal parts look quite good without the panelling, it makes it look less generic. It may be a while before i get round to the battle wagon because i have GCSE course work to do before the new term starts:shaking:.

what is your Msn id..:))?

The circular panelling on the ring is much better.

Can you mail the textures to [email protected] in their present form? Although bits could possibly be touched up here and there they're 90% of the way there and I'd like copies of them in this state. You'll get some in game screen shots for your trouble. I could even be persuaded to send you the .pof, so long as IceFire isn't looking ;).
-
okay dokey, they are sent. Do i get a small mention in the credits?
I've started work on the Raider Wagon, but that one is a bit more difficult. I'll keep you updated.
-
Not too sure about this, is the camo scheme ok? If not then how do i need to change it?

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the battlewagon a tad more weathered? I mean I thought they were rickety old things, not clean at all... it might just be me though :)
-
well ..that is a start..:)Of course u will Have credit..All our model had a small list like
Battlewagon
Modeled:Ian
Textured:Riven
Converted:Shark
Tables: Icefire
-
is this weathered enough for you?

This is a tough ship. More so than the League base. The geometry isn't particularly interesting. It looks like a pencil with various bits and pieces stuck on it as an afterthough. Which is probably the idea. This means the textures need to work really hard to make this ship look nice. Good luck with this one.
Okay, a few little things. I'd appreciate some thoughts from other members of TBP team if they're around on this because I may be way off here.
The textures on this model are too regular and too generic. The different parts of the ship need different bits of individual detail on them make them stand apart.
The main hull "tin can" texture needs to vary a little along the length of the ship. Check out the AOG model pictures. The fuel tank things need fuel tank details. The ... erm... barrels, need barrel details. In both cases I'm talking subtle details. Rather than slapping on a rusty barrel texture :). The beam cannon nose is a pain. There are supposed to be 3 rings and a load of mechanics underneath. Check out the IFH and Jump Point reference pics. I notice the beam cannon nose has a glow on it. You don't need to worry about that. FS2 does a great job of muzzle glows when beams fire. Best just leave a black hole with a nice gun muzzle detail around it.
Colour wise I think the grey panels are too dark, and I think classic Narn red would probably work better than the brown. Thunder's comment about the ship needing to look more weathered is a good one, although I wouldn't know how to do that. Is there anyone who does?
-
hmm no progress since then?
-
im a busy boy, my NW nation needed lookin after, Combat Federation Trailer needed tweeking, GCA missions needed beta testing, own renders and projects to do, GCSE art work to do. Maybe a week before another update :sigh: sorry

Edwin has improved his Raider CNC Transport textures and Simon has contributed a new set of textures. Check them out here:

I pull my hat out of the ring cause it was gonna be my first attemp and I can tell you now that I couldn't even come close to what's already been done!
