Title: I recognise those sounds...
Post by: Iain Baker on February 04, 2020, 11:33:43 am
I was trying to get my head around how kindle e-mail works and saw this video. As soon as it started I thought 'Hang on, I know where those sound effects come from'  ;)

Why does the countermeasure sound always resembles to me something like low quality toilet flush sound made for some sort of early computer game product?

1: Freespace sort of IS an early computer game product
2: Sound libraries, my friend

Nice, but who in their right mind used a space toilet flush sound for a countermeasure launch in FS?

...unless...  :nervous:

I still hear certain mechanical-type sounds from Myst and Riven all over the place.

I thought it was just me that thought it sounded like a flush.  But, if I am launching countermeasures, I may also be crapping myself because there is a missile locked onto me, so...

O rly?  From what I remember, the Myst and Riven sounds were mostly created in-house?

Huh...well if that's the case, then Cyan definitely must have licensed out some of their effects, or else they only did some in-house and got others from available sound banks.

This happens all the time. I think most game sounds are taken from libraries of generic sounds that are used by many companies in different products. Even in that video, the second sound is the repair bot in Deus Ex as well as the hovercrafts in Total Annihilation. I also just heard the FS menu sound when you select a weapon in your loadout in some fairly recent game I played (can't remember which one).

Take a look at this video, at 7:33...

This is the extent of the information I have on the sounds.  So the clock bong and the bubbles were made in-house, but no sweeping generalizations are stated.  Mongoose's two theories are both plausible.

Which, of course, is exactly the proper reaction to have. And to be honest, the countermeasure sound doesn't sound like a toilet flush to me, it sounds more like an explosive fart with no small amount of force behind it. That also seems eerily apropos as well.
