stealth is the new keeper of the tester list, please e-mail him after reading the instructions in this post.
----
If the freespace exe is to be successful and have all the things you guys want for your mods the comunity must help us.
We need testers. I would like to setup a web page that has a list of people willing to be testers (when they are not busy). All you need to be a tester is have a working copy of freespace 2.
Then coders and perhaps even modders can look over the list and choose the person with the specs they need to test on.
E-mail the following information to the tester list keeper (see above)
With the following fields filled in:
HL name: The name you use on the Hardlight Forum
ICQ number: If you dont have ICQ use the next row
Alt com details: State which system, ie messenger and your id
Os: Operating system ie 95,98,ME,2000,XP
CPU: Type and speed of CPU
Memory: Amount of memory
Gfx card: Name and make
Sound card: Name and make
Country: Need this to get an idea of when you will be online
Please help, graphics issues in particular can have many strange problems on different cards. For example if I sat down and upgraded directX to version 8 and added bumpmapping and got it all working perfectly on my GF4 the chances are it wont look right on a voodoo card. But I dont have a voodoo card, so the only way to fix it is to run tests.
If testing is an interactive thing, ie the tester follows instructions from the coder then the time taken to fix bugs is a fraction of what it would be if your looking at a report someone has posted without all the details.
Ideally we need a list of people containing all major graphics cards and operating systems.
Please help

Stickified.
And people, before you even start to ask why this is here and not in the Source Code forum, remember we're trying to get as many people as possible - especially you MODders out there - to test the product people are working hard on. Remember, the end result will be both for your benefit as well as for the community for which you make all these MODs.
But please, only sign up for testing if you are serious about it - don't say "Yeah, I'll do it..." and then ignore the whole thing. And if you are simply too busy, that's fine, but we don't need this thread turning into a whole slew of "I would, but I can't" posts.
"Ask not what the community can do for you, but what you can do for the community." :D

What exactly does your Exe file do?
I think I have heard about it, but my brain is like a sieve.
-
The whole point of the list is that it exists through the entire process of all developements. Different coders would contact you with different exe's when they needed to.
Its irrelevent what my exe does. Though read my sig for a clue.
Testers cant pick exe's, coders must pick testers based on their system specs or its pointless.

He's talking about the Source Code Project, if that's what you're asking. It's basically a under development FS2.exe, called fs2_open, with various programmers adding in virtually whatever they want - we've already got code for fighter-mounted beams, beam texturing, and DivX cutscene playing, to name a few improvements.
And if that was not what you were asking, I'll just go and hide. :)

Really we are adding what 'you' want.
Checkout my poll:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,9510.0.html
Our changes are only going to be properly put to use if modders use them. So its in our interest to do what *you* want. So you are helping yourselves by getting involved in this.
I challange each mod in developement to nominate a tester for the list. ;)
-
I somehow was never able to open your last exe, the one with the Geforce fix... (or rather, the rar file containing the exe)
-
I have signed in to test exes under The Babylon Project. :)
-
RandomTiger, check your Email.
-
IMHO, all the coders/testers should be on a testing mailing list...a coder releases and EXE, and the testers test it and post their responses on the mailing list.
-
Im checking mail and stuff right now people!

My system will hopefully be more selective.
I dont think its realistic to expect everybody to test everything.
Not unless we start paying them :)
Someone would have to go through all those test details as well.
Perhaps for major things.
The list is for when you have XP and GF4 and it works OK but you know people with a voodoo card experience bugs. You go through the list and try and find a person with a voodoo card whos not busy to help you lock down that bug.
-
yer i will help in anyway i can just email me @
[email protected]
-
OK. Now we are making progress.
Could do with another Voodoo 2 owner.
Although Im am sad about the fact that 2 people consider themself too stupid to help. Only basic computer knowledge is needed for this.

Alright, I'll nominate myslef I guess.
I'll send a mail soon.
-
But Im the only one working on mine! Ah now your gonna make me look bad! Agian!:( :blah:
-
hey guys, I'm new here, and I'd really like to help out on this project, freespace is one of my favorite games. I'd sign up for testing, but before I do I just have to ask since I might be changing my vid card sometime soon, but all is very uncertain... would it still be okay?
Currently with a geforce 2 gts, but thinking about a geforce 4, in case you wondered...
My only regret is that I can't help you with the programming, I really wish I could but my knowledge doesn't go over the basics of VB and C. :(
cheers
-
Welcome Wamingo
Sign up for the testing (use e-mail please) and just give me a shout when you change your card.
How basic is 'basic'?
Freespace is in C++ but its not really object orientated so its really just in C with some features of C++.
Perhaps if any simple jobs arrise you could be of help, if not there are many things to be done. Im sure you will be able to make yourself useful.
-
Fire the welcome cannon...
*order echoes down line*
Fire the cannon!
Fire, the cannon!
Fire cannon!
Sir, we've lost the cannon!
I've seen it fire once, and never again so I built my own:

then count me in :) email on its way...
oh and "basic" as in... printf ("hello world");
well, dos prompt stuff only and mainly nothing fancier than string-manipulation (or whatever it's called)... the fs2 code is definately beyond me.
-
I'd sign up except that I really dont have the time right now, I _can_ offer suggestions and maybe propose some solutions to certain problems.
-
Thanks people, we're now got about 17 people which is a workable number. Always room for more though! Keep it coming.
-
[email protected] or
ICQ#5256653
I'll have to get more room made on my drive... I won't make the same mistake twice! I tried the new open source thing in my eXpenrimental folder. I'll make a NEW Folder just for the EXE... That will make ummm 8 copies of FS2 on my Computer
-
Could people who want to sign up please read the instructions, in the first post of the thread and contact me by e-mail.
-
So what were all those polls I anwsered about my CPU and video card, lol ok I guess I'll do it again. L8TR! too tired you think I spend more than 8 hours a night on boards (ok maybe 12 but I can't be late for work!)...
-
The polls are there to get a cross section of the community. Not just the helpful section like us :)
-
I care about the source code project... if you need any help with it let me know... i'm interested!!!
-
Please read first post of thread.

Welcome aboard.
-
E-mail sent. I'm fairly busy, so I might not always have immediate time, but I can find some. Maybe late at night...;-) It would be cool to see some form of multithread capability... Maybe allow software TnL emulation the function of a second CPU. I don't know how plausable that would be, but I would like it...
-
I said I would help, but I'm really too busy, sorry.
-
JudgeMental:
Thanks for joining up.
This thread is about testing. Make source code request to the source code forum or the chances are I'll be the only coder who reads it. :)
Im not sure I get what your saying about multithreading. As far as T&L goes, why would we want to emulate when we could simply make it use hardware T&L on your card?
I have done some work on this and discovered it to be a VERY difficult task, so dont hold your breath.
-
Thanks to the new testers who have just joined. Not much going on at the moment but hopefully at some point you guys will get to test fs2_open DX8. Theres a lot to do yet but its getting there.
-
sent the email a day ago i believe and im chomping at the bit to help out wiht this:P:P but i will wait :D:D ready ta help whever i can
-
DX8 is on its way, we need more testers!
I hope you people already on the tester list are ready to put some time into it.

Ready and willing

Ok Email Sent.
One thing that could be done on FS2, though I'm not certain how easy it would be, is Smart Targetting (i.e., the guns have a certain amount of 'tracking' on them)? I'm pretty sure it would take some major coding though :(
Flipside
-
Wouldnt that take the skill out of it? :doubt:
In future I suggest you make any code suggestions in the source code forum. Im may be the only coder that reads this thread and Im too busy to pick up random jobs. :)
-
Fair enough about the posts, to be honest, I got confused about which forum I was in, I'd had trouble with the Poll on the Source Code page, and must have clicked back onto this one :(
As for the too easy bit, well, it depends on what you are shooting at, and how many weapons can actually do it ;)
Flipside
-
have you replied to my email yet?? its been a week or so...or is ya really busy mate??
-
Sorry, I am very busy actually :)
You are, and have been on the tester list for a while.
Im not sure anyone uses it but me at the moment.
But if we can just crack off a directX release in the next month you will be getting something to do.
Basically the tester list will make or break the DX8 upgrade.
All the DX8 coders are using Geforce cards.
However a test exe I released to someone confirmed my fears.
His non geforce card had problems, and so will a lot of others I gather.
Just for the record this is a fairly standard problem for games developement on the PC, theres so many different combinations of specs. Make you wonder why anyone bothers really.
Anyway so if you guys help us through this then it will be DX8 for all, otherwise GF users only. We cant fix bugs we cant recreate on our system unless we have testers like you.
If you want to prepare yourself have a look at the site you will be using to register the bugs: http://fs2source.warpcore.org/bugzilla/
Thanks Azrael for your continued support and interest.
-
np's man..i just didnt know if you were swamped with the code or not...im jsut esstatic that im actually getting feeback from a developer :D
-
Need a tester with a TNT2, even if it is just this one time to help me out.
-
E-mail sent. Do you know when there will be stuff to test?
-
We are slowly finishing off the DX8 stuff, a few people have been given stuff to do already but for most people they will have to wait for an offical release.
-
DX8 needs testing, we need more testers!
-
Oups, I totally missed this thread...

RandomTiger, you said you wanted another Voodoo 2 owner.
Would a Voodoo 3 do instead?;7
BTW, want was the e-mail address again? I can't find it anywhere in the thread.
Or did you mean use the link thingy in stealth's profile:nervous:
-
Yer, e-mail stealth, hes the new keeper
-
Raptor, you'll be added to the list as soon as i get write-access to the site.
Also for the record, if anyone would like to sign up for the tester list, or have any information changed or removed that's already up, please contact me at either:

Who is currently on the tester list?

Hey, I'd love to help....
