Title: MVE files - here we go again!
Post by: RandomTiger on August 27, 2002, 12:19:25 pm
Sorry guys, here we go again, the video code is just about finalised (works on GF4 and Voodoo 3 anyway). If you want to be sure it works on your gfx card join my test list (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,9658.0.html). Otherwise dont come crying to me later.

Has anyone got a contact at V that they could use to ask if they would redistribute the mve files as mpg or divx?

If not would it be horribly illegal to record the movies onto video (which I have done) and then re-encoded them (which I might be able to do) and then distrubute them?

Yeah, it would be nice to have some way of still viewing the original cutscenes ingame. Unfortunately I don't think that is allowed. (screw you, Interplay! :mad2: :D)

I don't think Interplay cares anymore. Hell, IIRC, I don't think Interplay exists anymore, they got bought up by Titus a while back...

I though as long as it is a fan thing and NOT used for any type of profit or sharing of a complete working product (Ie. entire game intact) that there isn't a problem doing whatever you want...

The only problem I see is that Interplay should be paying YOU GUYS!!!! (Interplay Games By Gamers that suck and just want other Gamers $ , but get lucky once in a while and make a good product but later on screw up and say 'we don't care about you' and don't give you any support and boy is this motto long!!!!! )

Make a room somewhere else for those type of discussions (hint)

Actually it would be a cool thing if there was a normal CHAT room around we could go to 24/7...

HEY ADMINS!!! Make a CHAT function.... (wait subliminal request):
[Chat is cool]  [Chat is needed]  [Chat is truth] :wtf:

I have absolutely no idea what you'fve done...but.....

Can you set it up so the code recognises specific filenames - those of the MVEs for the main campaign - and then calls up the exe file that runs the movie (the MVEs can be converted to EXE format.... it's rare, but I have the convertor) ?

Shadow Wolf offered to make FS Chat Rooms, but no one listened.

I always thought that messing with MVE files got people into trouble, but heck, you guys are right. it would be nice, as long as we don't sell it or anything. They shouldn't have a problem.

MVE Player wasn't sold for profit, but its still considered a copyright infringement by Interplay and was forced to be taken down off of descent2.com years ago.  Just food for thought. :)

If MVE player was reverse engineered then interplay can't do a thing about it.
The same is true here. Since the MVE code was stripped out of FS2 is someone was to write their own then there would be nothing that interplay could do about it.
 Reverse engineering is perfectly legal.

Also very difficult. To keep it legal I guess you would have to start from sratch. Everyone I know who has thought about doing that has been working off existing code.

Even if the EULA forbids it?

Probably. Otherwise they could make any crap up in the EULA :)

Oh in that case my apologies Shadow Wolf... I should have listened :sigh:

Anyway less legal talk and more moral talk! God told me to make a cutscene!

"The Quest for the Holy Cutscene!"

(It's only a model :doubt: ...)

"Knights of the round planet!"
