Title: FreeSpace Online! FreeSpace Online!
Post by: HitmanBert on April 09, 2001, 03:42:00 pm
It's pretty much evident that FreeSpace 3 is out of the question, and everybody is starting to make posts about it, "FS3 a possibility? (No flaming please.)"New Ideas for FreeSpace3" are just a few of the topics that have popped up lately over at the VBB, and people all of great ideas, it's just to bad FreeSpace 3 will never become a reality... or will it?

To save time I'm going to put the basic ideas of the game in point form...
Originally this was a concept for the creators of EVE (//"http://www.eve-online.com") But when I had completed the design, I realized that the game just wouldn't be the same without Terrans, Vasudans and Shivans. Of course, Interplay wouldn't go for this idea, but they cannot do anything if it created by gamers. We could just consider it a BIG mod. So far, the only things I see that need to be added into the game are

Volition's help is definitely going to be needed for this one and without their help this project will probably be a no go, and for some reason, I'm thinking that this project is going to be a no go, but hey like I said, it's still worth a try.

Right now everybody reading this has to ask themselves two questions

An ambitious project, and one I would dearly love to see happen. It's just you're gonna need some nifty coding to get some of them done. I'm no coder, but would be willing to help out any way I could.
And can I make a suggestion? The ability to chose between inter and intra system jumps. Making more than one jump in a mission can't be all that hard to implement- StarLancer did it, although that says nothing as to the difficulty of implementing it, it does show it is possible.

An ambitious project to be sure.

I'm no coder but as far as models, plot or general game and story ideas go I'd love to help.

In answer to your question, in my humble opinion it would be a good idea to set it after FS2, that way there's less chance of someone messing up the Volition plot by adding their own ideas and there's a whole universe of unknowns to discover  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

There are some major design issues to consider though, how do we add new ships and mods? Surely everyone would have to download the models etc. to play in certain missions. It would also require a great deal of regulation to stop Joe newbie adding a fighter with the fighting capability of an orion destroyer.
One possibility is to list requirements on the login screens and links to the files. I can think of quite a few other problems that are going to pop up.

On the plus side though I could implement my own plan, I was considering doing a campaign based around it but it was just made for the kind of thing you are describing. Basically it would be the first GTVA rescue squad, a squadron that specialises in evacuation, ship cover and all sorts of dangerous "get us out of here" missions.

You could have all sorts of specialised squadrons... There's a great deal of potential.

Unfortunately, I don't think  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) can help us on this one. They are a commercial company and probably far too busy with preparing Summoner and Red Faction as well as whatever else is going on behind closed doors. Hope, yes, but don't hold your breath.

Not as simple as that. A number of us have neither the skill nor the time available to help. It looks like the most important things you will need are programmers - and you are probably going to need the source also. The aforementioned is in doubt, but if you can get your hands on the code even, it may not be easy to get your hands on programmers skilled enough to do anything substantial with it.

I hope you are successful.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I'm no coder or modeller myself so I cannot help you. But I would like to wish you all the best in trying to make your idea a reality.
