that's a mock-up of Star War's Han Solo
note the way they call them 'pilots' too, it's an insult!
I didn't know Toyota made planes

It was quite a surprise for us but Salo said that they have been discussing about this for the last three months (the Chief of Toyota F1 Team and Salo), so... :doubt:
He actually said also that he's going to retire from racing business... at least for a while. "I'm getting too old for F1's" (He's 35... if I recall right)
So the both Mika's are out... after this season.
Nevertheless Salo is not going to loose up before this season is over... so he's going to drive as well as the car will let him :)
And this is from a Finnish Eveningpaper (IltaLehti)

Firstly: Why the hell is everyone finnish or can speak the finnish language
Secondly: DRIVERS!!!!!!! Not pilots.

1st) I was wondering the same thing... i'm american!? :)
2nd) AWESOME!!! Usually everyone agrees that 'because they're traveling at 270 mph (which btw everyone, isn't that fast) THEY SHOULD BE CALLED PILOTS!
that's BS and you know it. a pilot flies.. these guys drive, so therefore they're called DRIVERS
that's 1st grade crap

EDIT: webster dictionary:

Etymology: Middle French pilote, from Italian pilota, alteration of pedota, from (assumed) Middle Greek pEdOtEs, from Greek pEda steering oars, plural of pEdon oar; probably akin to Greek pod-, pous foot
1 a : one employed to steer a ship : HELMSMAN b : a person who is qualified and usually licensed to conduct a ship into and out of a port or in specified waters c : a person who flies or is qualified to fly an aircraft or spacecraft
2 : GUIDE, LEADER
3 : COWCATCHER
4 : a piece that guides a tool or machine part
5 : a television show produced and filmed or taped as a sample of a proposed series
6 : PILOT LIGHT 2
nothing in there about racing-car drivers

Yes, PILOTS.
And I don't speak finnish at all.

you're just following what you've heard
use common sense... i know they might call them pilots, but it's WRONG! these guys drive; sure maybe it's twice as fast as most people; but still... they don't fly@

I'm thinking they're called "pilots" because it implies more skill than "drivers", because most Americans are drivers. However, most Americans aren't pilots.

Most Honda Civics and every other drag car nowadays have 'wings' and 'fins'... does that make THEM pilots?
EDIT:

that's not our fault! i mean, i could drive a car at 200 MPH on a straight track, or even any track they can.
sure it's dangerous, they crash all the time and crap, but it still doen't mean they're "pilots"... their cars still have a stick-shift, a brake, an accelerator, a clutch and a steering wheel: making them almost identical to all other cars all over the world
sure they're faster, but they're still CARS!!!

First off, Honda Civics arent "drag cars" its an economy car....
Secondly, those wings and fins were added after, they dont come like that new....

Yep... there's no doubt about it... the HLPers did it again
the subject of this topics changed as fast as it started
(actually this must be at least the second F1 topic -or even third- where discussion changed into Pilot vs. Driver argument :D)
-
does this mean that if you pilot race cars, the what about race boats?
And Civics can go just as fast, ( ) Fast and The Furious anyone (god that movie was like a blow job from a 59 year old man)
-
F1 is boring and stupid... bleh. :blah:
Hmm, they might be pilots but they should be drivers, they certainly shouldn't be pilots. :p

1: Cut out the pilot/driver discussion. We've had 3 F1 topics this year, and in EVERY SINGLE ONE of them this arises.
2: I'm not so concerned about Salo, who is in the end of his career anyway, but McNish, who has proven to be an acceptable middle-position pilot (think Trulli, and for the last couple of seasons Villeneuve)
3: I speak Finnish to some extenct (I watched a lot of MTV3 when I was like... 5.)
4: It's times like these that make me wish I had admining powers.

Do you think theres a reason behind the fact swearing is banned and that the reason could also mean that the content of your posts is also inappropriate.

I don't need your rhetoric now trebek

I'll put it in very simple terms, i dont think you should post stuff like that when young children are about on this site and im tempted to think gamespy wouldnt approve of such stuff, i certainly dont.

*is tempted to be defiant*

*Adds another to the list*
as for gamespy... grrr... hell if i'm payin' $10 to play their games..... yet they still ask me every time

they aren't drag cars, and only select few cars come with wings and/or fins (Mitsubishi Eclipse, etc.) but a lot of (teenagers) convert them into racing cars... they give them a body kit, etc. you know what i'm talking about
but still, that' doesn't mean the drivers are called 'pilots'

Civics can be easily modified to be racing cars. Sure they're no F1 racing cars :) lol, but still
and civics are KNOWN for their exhaust system. listen to a new civic rev up high in neutral. the whole ground shakes
-
the movie still used hondas...... i mean.... HONDAS!
I knew it was going under after that.
(that and the complete lines of utterly bad acting for lack of better descriptive words.)
But u are right, doesn't make them OR f1's pilots.

i've never heard pilots. always drivers. ask jeff gordon, he'll tell you it's drivers. and i say so, so there.

You people just don't get it. It's official. THEY...ARE...CALLED...PILOTS
I'd say there are two different things: racing and F1 racing. Well hell look at the cocpits, does these look like car systems to you.
Oh yes, if you haven't noticed it, the commentators are calling them pilots :p :D
So here you go. End of story. PERIOD!

1) F1 racing they go a lot faster and the cars sound like mosquitos, but they still are DRIVING, not FLYING.
2)Just cause the commentators call them pilots doesn't mean they are
:D GO CARL!!! i agree with him

Being offical doesnt mean its correct, just that their foolish.

give me a very official looking website that calls them pilots, and I'll believe you. Until then I'm listning to nascar calling them drivers...

You got a problem with that? Before you start anything, just remember that I'm the one who speaks softly and carries a freakin' huge gun. ;7 :ha:

I'm with sandwhich, 150%

100% is the maximum.

You're a genius.
-
nuh uh, get cp in here....
u can have more than 100% of something... like um.... a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich, 150% of 1 pb n' j sandwhich is one and a half pb n' j sandwhiches.
I am with sandwhich :D 150%

yeah it's possible..
say you are supposed to take 2 apples and you take 4, you're taking 200% of what you're supposed to
...i dunno :D

Actually, a better example would be the one of prices. If something costs $2 and at some other point in time it changes to $8, it would be costing 300% more.

very true
100% + could be applied to a lot of things
like, he's a 200% jerk, etc. ;) just kididng
-
The point here is that whoever said he was 150% with Sandwich was wrong. He can't be anything more than completely with Sandwich, thus he can only be 100% with him. There's no such things as completely and a half.
-
:wtf: :wtf: :wtf:
no no no no no !!!
you are wrong so very wrong that you have started lieing to yourself and are beggining to beleive it.
that and you are missing the point waaaay too much
-
OK, OK, they are drivers. HAPPY NOW?!
(It's just that where I live, everyone call them pilots)
-
welcome into the fold :)
-
*shakes head and sighs*
You guys....
-
:lol::lol::lol:
Drivers, they are, or at least they should be.
Nice thread... :lol::rolleyes::lol:

This just got me wondering, is there any situation in real life where a percentage containing complex numbers or quaternions comes up? Or even transcendental reals? :D
And the admin says it's pilots, then it IS PILOTS. End of story.
But two other admins say they are drivers, so they are drivers. :D

:wtf:
*looks up things on Atomica*
[q]quaternion (kwətûr'nēən) , in mathematics, a type of higher complex number first suggested by Sir William R. Hamilton in 1843. A complex number is a number of the form a+bi when a and b are real numbers and i is the so-called imaginary unit defined by the equation i2=-1. The rules for operating with complex numbers are simply those of operating with the polynomial a+bx except that i2 is replaced by -1 whenever it occurs. A quaternion, an extension of this concept, is a number of the form a+bi+cj+dk when a, b, c, and d are real numbers and i, j, and k are imaginary units defined by the equations i2=j2=k2=ijk=-1. Quaternions, as well as vectors and tensors (later outgrowths of the concept of quaternions), have many important applications in mechanics.[/q]
Well in that case, probably not. :D

Pilots or Drivers... at least people like eachothers in F1 world :D
