Title: Homing primaries
Post by: LtNarol on August 30, 2002, 09:04:56 pm
Is it possible to make heat seaking primary weapons? Lasers chasing down their targets and the likes?

I've tried it...they keep going the same direction, but they point towards their target....try it somethme just for laughs....

not good...that rapid fire weapon just doesnt want to cooperate without swarm and with it the turrets wont aim...if homing doesnt work I'll be out of options....

make it a secondary. The player won't really notice, and just make the missile's pof be a glow....

Hmh, you probably know this already but "Swarm" tag requires the turret where it is equipped to be barreled and moving. Swarm does not work on flat turrets.

I know, and even the barreled turrets dont aim right

Swarm is not perfect. When it first begins to track it's target, turret will fire, resulting of course that it does not hit it's target. When it next time fires, it should be already tracking it's target and pointing at right direction.

But hell if I know, I am just a simple guy lurking here and VWBB forums, not a real modder. :) Just FREDder.
...right, back to making missions for next TBP release. :nervous:

When you talk about swarm are you on about swarmer missiles like the hornet?

If I am correct, than we are discussing a weapon that goes on a turret. If all that you do is make a glow as the .pof with no physical model, then the player will not really notice, and capships automatically have unlimited ammunition for their missile weapons.

So they have an assembly line or something on board? :D

But the player -WILL- notice that its a missile turret firing primaries and not a laser turret firing primaries.  Add that to the fact that the terran engine glow is the wrong color and it'll be a terran ship that fires these so therefore it -WILL- be a terran engine glow that shows up no matter which glow you use in the pof.

Can I ask how a primary would be homing anyway? Or is that classified? :D

It could be something like HW:C's tracking plasma (I don't know how many people noticed that the upgraded energy weapons in that game actually followed their targets).  The biggest question would have to be why have something like this in Freespace.  Sort of defeats the purpose of fighters in general, doesn't it?

its an anti-fighter weapon, so yes, its meant to defeat the purpose of fighters :p more to the point i can't get it to fire properly from terran cruisers, namely the aeolus but i've discovered that with the aeolus its not the weapon's problem but the actual model's defaults with its barreled turrets are...off...

That ship is awesome! I want it!! Wouldn't it look cool as a pre-Great War destroyer? Not that powerful, yet more so than the Fenris? PM me! I'm always looking for Pre-Great War like ships.

I've tried and tried and tried.  Apparently you cannot get primaries to home like missiles.

You can only use a swarm missile.  I've got an older weapon design laying around based on the idea of seeking bullets.  I'll see if I can dig it up.

though it you want to do one yourself it's just a rapid fire missile with a large swarm number (25-36) and a rather limited heatseaking ability.  medium range, fast, but low damage.

I had the same Idea inspired of course by the Needler from Halo.

It's actually designed to be a replacement for the Aeolus, not a precursor to the Fenris.
