Title: The GTD Ogre
Post by: aldo_14 on July 21, 2001, 06:36:00 am
(2.7 km 19-25 turrets, Orion successor)

I (sort of) have 2 models - one with big-***  F.E.P. Cannons, and one without, and I can't decide which to use....

With (1900 poly)

Without
(NB:  Will add additional  turrets on top - 2 parters - if i use this design)

Dude! that's a cool ship. I would say without the big guns, but with barrelled turrets instead.

Without the guns... yeah, much better that way  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

And an engine in the front section would look cool too  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Awesome design!   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) If you ask me, I personally don't like the FEP cannons very much. To engines in underslung pods would be really cool. For another personal opinion, I don't like 3 barreled turrets much... I think it makes the ship look antiquianted. But do please the public   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I think it looks better with. Otherwise, theres just empty space there... Both are great A-1  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Definately without, although if you decide you really want the big cannon mounts I can show you a different way of modeling those that I think will suit your model much much better, and take fewer polys to boot.

I hope not - just to clarify, the main hull is 806 polys.  The 4 big turrets are seperate sub-objects of about 140 polys each, and there are around 15 smaller recessed beam type turrets.

I'd like it with. You put in all that extra work, and you might as well..!

On the other hand, however, it is not in the Terran tradition to have all weaponry facing in one direction (it's more a Shivan trend - check out the Sathanas and Ravana).

Terran tradition will put the most effective weapons on the opposite side of the vessel.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Yeah, but they mgiht have learnt from the shivans... oh wait, this is the GTVA, so probably not  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Anti-cap weapons on the front are good for hit&run attacks, but the shivans never really noticed that  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

I mistakened "Ogre" as "Orgy"  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/devil.gif) (Lord Jesus, please forgive me!)

And by the way, NICE model!  But I think that the name is inapporpriate.  "Ogre" sounds more of a Shivan ship.  Name it something like the "GTD Eros".

I have a naming precedent for all the ships in this 'series' (i.e. the campaigns' future setting), such as the GTCa Warlock, the SOCv Wyvern, and the GTWc Gryphon.

You know, I've wondered about that...

I know multi-player pilots named Warlock, Gryphon, and Wyvern but can't say I ever ran across one named Ogre (or Orgy)  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)

As far as the model, I like it _with_ the guns, if you create a new beam for them.  Say an anti-cap ship beam that has a very long range (hence the reason for the extended barrels, needed to properly collimate the beams for the super extended range  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) )

This ships looks very nice. But I think an Orion successor should not be symetrical.

He is on topic... all my big ships (bar the odd  station) are symettrical - mainly to provide equal fire coverage...and I actually hate the original Orion, anyway.

Original concept piccy, showing the guns;

I had to dump the frontal design because it exceeded the poly limits...

Orion would kick any hecate's butt any day  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif), however for this ogre, might need a few BFgreens  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

FEP Cannons... hard to describe, but like a barrage beam weapons... lots of relatively weak shots in a short time.

Hey Aldo, I was just going to suggest that - those beams look really cool, with lot sgiong on and off at the same time. Have like a row of beam cannons, or an array of spike type things (like a small scale of the Sathanas beam arms) - if we could get them to spin, that would be cool, like the Belial. What a cool effect... Don't know if it would work with beams, though.

The big-***  ships I'm building will have something like this - fixed fire beam cannons mounted on rotating sub-objects...I'm hoping they'll fire ok when I test.

Final decision - I'm keeping the big guns  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
