Title: [Re-release] Rain On Ribos IV (Omnibus version 1.1.5)
Post by: 0rph3u5 on January 09, 2022, 03:34:31 pm

Version 1.1 of the Memories of the Great War-Omnibus is now ready for download.

It brings back Rain on Ribos IV.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This campaign was released on a 21.4. Nightly build. Its version was set to avoid issues with "Control5"-code, however Knossos may allow newer builds.
Please use the Nightly build provided (20220101).

(https://fsnebula.org/static/kn_download.png) (https://fsnebula.org/mod/MoGW-omni)

Sadly it is also a product of crunch and large ammount of elventh hour bug fixes, but releasing it was preferable to another long delay - It literally had to happen today because I will not be able to release anything for several months at least.

The state of the debriefings is a particular sore spot (99% percent of them are unedited c&ps from the original release) and I didn't have time to run the new campaign file through it's paces.

Please let's collect all bug reports in this topic...

Note: The nightly from January 1st 2022 ( is the currently recommended build.

EDIT:
Known Issues:
Items in green are verified fixed for a future update.

- I forgot to turn off the Debug-setting in Mission 16 and 17b. You will see a spoileric debug-output while playing. (fixed in 1.1.1)

- Campaign cannot be progressed after Mission 13.

- Several: Broken " ' ", "..." and " - " special characters.
- Mission 3: The AWOL-debrief triggers incorrectly - also it was a line from a previous, unedited version of the script.
- Mission 8: The debriefings for a partial and full success scenario trigger when a full success is achieved.
- Mission 9: additional helpful pointers added for Difficulty <Hard
- Mission 12: Several messages are duplicated.
- Mission 12: The debriefing for a partial and full success scenario trigger when a full success is achieved.
- Mission 13: Missing command briefing animations. (2_cb_typhon for stage 1 and 2_cb_subtrack for stage 2)
- Mission 17A & 17B: Due to table error the Typhons may not deploy missiles from their lower turrets for engagements with capital ships.
- Mission 17A: Several messages out of sequence.
- Mission 17A: Directives for Basiliks flanker wings are missing.
- Mission 17B: Shivan bombers arriving out of sequence.
- Mission 17A (single mission only):
Spoiler:
Hammer of Light-variants of Vasudan fighters are missing from the Loadout
- Mission 17A: Cut Content to be restored

Last night's post was brought on by insomnia and factually incorrect. The Mission 15 included in the public facing package is the correct version for the Omnibus-release.

If you are on the "stable" release channel, there is currently no build that works with v1.1.1 (to my knowledge). When the 22.0 Build is completed, you should be able to use the "FSO Setting" option to select a new build that should work.

I've been asked to seperately publish the loading screen texts from RoR (called internally "Proverbs"), like I did with the other MoGW-campaigns. Because they not a a cohesive story but just fragments for world building, I didn't think of it before:

Spoiler:
NOTE #1: Mission 14 is missing because the original Mission 14 was cut without replacement from the Omnibus-release.
NOTE #2: The line breaks are not represented ingame due to limitations of the Loading Screeen Script.

Mission 1:
Ribos is all broken promises buried under miles of military supply chains. Do not come here.
- From a censored letter to home

Mission 2:
A subspace node is the closest thing in space to a hill to die on.
- From a censored letter to home

Mission 3:
SHIVAN CRUISER CAPTURED! - Terran forces triumph over Shivan menace!
- official GTA news bulletin

Mission 4:
The first pilot to die on any mission is the one sticking to The Plan.
- GTA Pilot's Manual

Mission 5
The only thing that makes Vasuda Prime different from Earth is that all of Earth's problems are man-made.
- A joke among Terran diplomats

Mission 6
The Shivans attack indiscriminately. If they possess any concept of the Rules of Engagement, we do not feature in it.
- Note by an analyst

Mission 7:
The Shivans are moving supplies from one location to another. It suffices for the definition of a supply chain.
- Note by an analyst

Mission 8:
Sending a signal into Subspace is not hard. Receiving it at its intended destination is the problem.
- Note by a scientist

Mission 9:
Always aim like you will never get another shot.
- Motto for GTA Marine Snipers

Mission 10
Everyone pays the price for loyalty. Who they are receiving it from is most important.
- Empress Khab VI. (1271-1292 CE)

Mission 11
Shivan ships do not have subspace drives, Shivan-made subspace drives have ships.
- Note by a scientist

Mission 12:
Our Imperium has always risen and declined by the quality of its defenders.
- Emperor Dvsu IX. (2287-2321 CE)

Mission 13:
Do the Shivans acknowledge our presence at all? Or do they just brush us aside without any thought?
- Note by a scientist

Mission 15:
Nothing can come from Subspace. But what if the Shivans made their home there?
- Note by a scientist

Mission 16:
The more energy is spent on fortifications, the more spectacular are their inevitable fall.
- Empress Qmrou XII. (1537-1541 CE)

Mission 17a:
The promise of mercy is the hollowest assurance. It is made truth or lie long before it is ever given.
- Nautarch Khavmre-nugur-Vek (93-27 BCE)

Mission 17b:
The weight of wrath is that of the world you leave behind for its pursuit.
- Meditations in Sin'tce, 3rd Book, Aphorism 196

Epilogue:
I have been an agnostic for 32 years. But when I saw that ... ship destroy Tombaugh Station, I experienced for the first time what it must be like to fear a vengeful god.
- a Tombaugh survivor

Memories of the Great War will return...

Not for public consumption, no. Thanks to my work at a major video game publisher I am a very busy person most of these days :)

Yes, they are mine.

Once Memories of Great War comes to a close with the release of Aldebaran Anacrusis, Vega must burn and "another one", it will be full steam ahead for The Lost Generation.

However the first thing that will be happening there is doing some foundational design work, e.g. re-designing how fighter equipment is going to work by adding more restrictions, changing some of the "also-rans" into more competetive designs (e.g. Trebuchet vs Stilleto II) or buffing some obvious losers (e.g. Prom R or the Infyrno). And that's before trying to shake up the narrative delivery in areas were the original scripts are sorely lacking, both in terms of technique and accessibility.

Basically, since circumstances dictate that I take my time, I do just that :D - It's going to be feature creep but I hope it is worth it.

Since my tenure as subject matter expert on the life cycle of dragons has come to end, I am going to get back on the FreeSpace-intersystem transport.

Here is the roadmap for the MoGW's upcoming patches:

Version 1.1.2 - Metadata Patch 1
- Sets the preferred FSO build back to the release channel
- Sets the preferred versions of the FSPort, MediaVPs and FSPort-MediaVPs to the most up to date
Target Date: before 31.12.'24

Version 1.1.X - Bug Fixes, Part 1
- Imports fixes already in the developer build into the public build, see list in the OP.
Target Time Frame: January 2025

Version 1.1.Y - Balance Patch, Part 1
- Adjustments to the GTCv Fafnir, SB Barghest, SF Gorgon and SC Lilith
- - GTCv Fafnir - Railgun damage increase
- - SB Barghest - custom seconary Armaments
- - SF Gorgon - Stat overhaul, Custom primary and secondary armaments
- - SC Lilith - Shivan Cluster overhaul
Target Time Frame: Febuary 2025

There are still some logistical hurdles I have to work out right now, before I can commit to more - including adding back in cut content from updated RoR-finale. But by time 1.1.4 is out that should be solved.

Looking forward to this.

There will be some minor updates to FSPort in the near future.  Hopefully these will be done in the next week so they will be available for RoR4.

PSA: I am scrapping the version scheme outlined in the previous post to make room for additional metadata patches.

The reason is that I and several other mod creators have issues with adding testers to private mod distribution lists on Knossos. The problem will not fixed in time to have the testing done I would have liked, so I will publish the metadata patch as scheduled and push hotfixes as needed.

The issue has been diagnosed. The core.vp is not being read, maybe an issue with the creation of the .vp - I will deploy a new version with the core-folders as loose files later today.

In related news, there has been some bleed from the balance patch into bugfixing patch. There is an untested impactful change that stealthily made its may its way through the mission files (i.e. I made it long ago and forgot).
Title: Re: [Re-release] Rain On Ribos IV (Omnibus version 1.1.3)
Post by: 0rph3u5 on January 21, 2025, 02:46:57 pm
I will be putting together patch 1.1.4 during this week, projected release on Sunday/Monday.

The major noticeable bleed from the balance patch will two-fold:

Code: [Select]
Primary Weapons:

- Terran Railgun#Fafnir
- - Damage up to 650x3 (from 555x3)

Secondary Weapons:

- Inachidae
- - added
- - lower damage Shivan Anti-Ship Missile for use by Dive Bombers (Shaitan) and Torpedo Boats (Nephilim, Seraphim); essentially a Barracuda#Shivan

The first one should reduce the time-to-kill for the GTCv Fafnir against the cruisers and capital ships, as has been requested. I wasn't sure about because I wanted a reason why the Fafnir became obsolete and its Railguns not being that good seemed like a good reason.

The second one is because I was thinking about making Shivan bomber attacks a little more forgiving, an issue that has been with MoGW since the initial releases. Other measures have been taken as well, such as bombs no longer being able to be double fired (which was already added in 1.1.0).
The Inachidae will be added to the loadouts of shivan bombers throughout Rain on Ribos IV with updated mission files.

Speaking of another thing arriving without marked up in version 1.1.0, I very much forgot to introduce the SB Barghest. While a in-universe introduction will be a matter of the future patch that also restores cut dialogue to other scenes, let's have an introduction here at least.

The SB Barghest - Shivan Tactical "Gunship-type" Bomber

Image courtesy of the Hard Light Wiki

The Barghest is a version of the SB Ojas (https://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php/SB_Ojas) you might have seen in other mods, such as Series Resurrecta und Exile. However unlike these mods, it is not just a "smaller, fast Nephilim" but a different beast - hence the different name from the original.

It is designed not to deliver heavy warheads to capital ships but to soften up the defenses around convoys and installations, paving the way for other bombers or heavy fighters. For this purpose the Barghest comes armed with with variation of three different secondary weapons systems - a fighter suppression cluster missile, a anti-subsystem missile and swarm missiles. Currently, these are the Shivan variants of the Synaptic, the Stiletto and the Hornet - but part of its design were custom weapons that have not been adapted to the FS1 environment yet (coming soon). The Barghest will never carry dedicated bombs, such as the Inachidae, Shivan Bomb, or Shivan Megabomb. The idea behind them is a three stage attack: Drive-off defending fighters, disable defensive turrets, and then engage defending cruisers in close combat. This approach makes it the enemy of otherwise tight defensive formations.

Like all variants of the Ojas, the Barghest is reasonably fast - moreso if the AI overclocks the engines on approach - its normal velocity is 65, and can go as high 85. Like most (vanilla) Shivan bombers it doesn't have an afterburner.
Its hitpoint total is comparable to Shaitan dive bomber but distributed differently, with a lower shield total (350) but slightly more hull points (1050). Like all (vanilla) Shivan bombers its countermeasure count is 0.

The design as a few catches attached to it in MoGW, mostly because MoGW still operates using the standard FSPort AI. That means the AI will not quite make the best of the Barghest's directional thrust (which it has like all Shivan ships) and runs on the standard AI logic when it comes to evasion and engagement time.

The Barghest is meant to subvert expectations when it comes to Shivan tactics - you expect the Shivans to come at you with their biggest guns right from the start. But role of Barghest wings on the battlefield is to wear you down and make other forces hit harder. It is particularly dangerous when pared with capital ship that can take full advantage against a disabled and disarmed enemy, such as the SD Lucifer or a missile-armed SD Demon.

Vanilla Shivan bombers don’t carry CMs? Huh… something else I will need to look at and add then.

Re the Barghest not using its side thrusters - feel free to copy and tweak the FreeSpace Port ReCharged AI - they will use it a lot after that  :drevil: ;7 (mission balance will be throughly borked of course 😜)

That's were the Gorgon comes in - but its not in RoR (though it will be in patch notes for the balance patch)

Speaking of the balance patch:
Because to major changes already made it in the last patch, I am mpving the time line to TBD.

Delayed is not denied, but there has been a logistical issue in RL (tl;dr I am still not able to travel back to Germany to get some of old gear.)

Quote
Primary Weapons:
VML-4 Laser
- Damage up to 4x3 (from 3x3)
- Shield Damage Multiplier up to 4.0 (from 3.0)
The VML-4 is a custom weapon in case you don't have any other shield piercing weapon in your loadout and want to give that other Vasudan pre-Avenger primary a boost, or rely on the Fang for hull damage.

Prometheus
- Velocity up to 475 (from 450)
- Damage up to 25 (from 20)

Terran Railgun#Fafnir
- Damage up to 650x3 (from 555x3)

Cluster Bomb
- Lifetime up to 7.5 (up from 5 seconds)
- set Homing to "NO" (vanilla is "YES", "HEAT")
- added "small only" AI override
- removed player allowed-flag
- removed double fire mode
- added an AI override for a minimum 1s flight time (not including submunition flight time)
- changed Submunition behaviour
- - Submunition 1: Count: 4; Flies up to 100m from detonation point; Damage per munition: 35 within 0-20m, 18 within 21-60m; Spawn Angle: 0-15 degrees from centre line
- - Submunition 2: Count: 4; Flies up to 100m from detonation point; Damage per munition: 35 within 0-20m, 18 within 21-60m; Spawn Angle: 15-30 degrees from centre line

Stiletto:
- Subsystem damage multiplier 2x (up from 1x), stacks with puncture-flag
- increased cargo size to 12 (from 8)
- removed double fire mode

Stiletto#Shivan:
- removed double fire mode
Aside from the removal double fire mode, the Shivan Stiletto keeps the original FS1 stats.

D-Missile
- Velocity up to 120 (up from 80)
- Lifetime up to 20 (up from 15)
- changed to "New Style"-Electronics mode
- - Duration 8-12 seconds
- - only affects weapons/turrets
- removed Bomb-flag
- removed player allowed-flag
- removed double fire mode

- Inachidae
- added
- - lower damage Shivan Anti-Ship Missile for use by Dive Bombers (Shaitan) and Torpedo Boats (Nephilim, Seraphim)
- - is subject to other "bomb rules" (no double fire, minimum 5s flight time)

The Inachidae and the changes to the Fafnir-Railguns are already in 1.1.4. Double fire has been removed from bombs in 1.1.0. The changes to the Cluster Bomb are subject to change depending on how much the AI hurts you using it in future campaigns.

ps.  By some of these changes you might be able to guess some future content .... but don't get too hyped up about hypotheticals ;)

Version 1.1.5 is live

This update contains to two bugfixes, thanks to the collaboration of Envoybane and Rajjia (who will recieve additional credit in an upcoming "Restored Content Patch" - more on that at a later date):

1. Resolved an error message during boot by fixing the syntax of mogw-ship.tbm

2. Fixed the lockout-out criteria in species.tbl

I am also investigating a reported issue that Phoenix V#MoGW is not available in certain load-outs in campaign mode.
