Is there any reason why they did that? Or are their programmers really that stupid? :D

Well, maybe they tried to make customers think that their software advances fast or something like that. :p

Meh, that's nothing. Anyone ever see Netscape v5.0? :D

Come to think of it....... i haven't..... HEY!!

Actually there is no Leisure Suit Larry 4 either :D
To tell you the truth, I didn't notice DX4 missing at all :p
But it's still quite funny ;)

When there's two products which do the same thing (for example IE and Netscape) it's no uncommon for one of the competetive retards to jump a few numbers to make people think that there software is more advanced than the other companies. Also, they have a habit of never going further than 8 or 9. I'm guessing that pretty soon you'll be seeing DirectX Pro 1.

I don't think so... at least DX9 is coming, and then DX9.1 I think, and then DX10.
I doubt DX Pro 1 is coming.

C'mon kids. Say it with me:
386, 486, Celeron/Pentium, Pentium 2, Pentium MMX, Pentium 3, Pentium 4, Xeon.
-
Who the hell cares what it's named? They can call it DirectX6000, it's just a name.
-
Not when it comes to marketting. People in general are gullible (sp?) and will fall for cheap marketting ploys and flashy packaging.
-
My point again, so? Let them fall for, who the hell cares?

hehe, yea I know... ;)
maybe.... naah, M$ doesn't have a sense for humour... maybe ;D

DirectX 4 did exist. It was just never released, since they changed major parts of the interfaces and created DirectX 5.
Oh, and an0n, you got it wrong. The first Celeron was a cache-starved Pentium2, anx Xeons are just cache-rich versions of P2, P3 and P4s (and they go more than two way SMP, but that's not important to most people).

yeah, but the Pentium thing was to get a trademark -- the earlier chips (386, 486) couldn't be trademarked (you can't trademark a number), so AMD, Cyrix, etc, came out with their "AMD 386" chips. When the Pentium came out, AMD had to come up with their own name. I think they called theirs the "586," IIRC :) Then the Duron, Athlon, etc.
Some more anomolies from the MS camp:- The first version of Windows NT was 3.1 (to keep parity w/ the 16-bit Windows version number.)
- Word for Windows went from 2.1 to 6.0 in one release -- again, parity with Word (for DOS) was the cited reason. The subsequent release was 95.
- Windows 1.0, 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, 95, 97, ME
I find the whole "95" and "2000" and "XP" stuff annoying.
Windows NT 4.0 had about 6 "Service Packs" which were no more or less than upgrades. Why not say call it version 4.1?
"Requires Windows 98 Second Edition, with Service Pack 3 applied" seems a little more cumbersome than "Windows 7.2.3" IMHO, but I'm one of those Linux pinkos anyhow ;)
