Title: Afterburner trails!
Post by: Goober5000 on September 09, 2002, 07:54:09 pm
After observing frustration on the part of GalacticEmperor and skepticism on the part of everyone else, I felt compassion for the board and decided to post screenshots...

Funny, I don't seem to remember them being THAT obvious, or that long. And one other thing. The afterburner trails were orangish/tan colored, not blue. My conclusion is that those aren't real.

EDIT: But, if you'd like to prove me wrong, go ahead. I don't mind at all being corrected.

EDIT2: Then again, those look slightly familiar. Maybe they aren't fakes. But still, I don't remember them being that long. Maybe we could have those in fs2? Source code people!! Have trails like that even when afterburners aren't angaged.

Heh, it'd make combat in nebulas a lot easier.
Especially in the eval mission where you're testing the Pegasus fighters when the Aquataine gets ambushed by that moloch.

Good God NO!

You don't want to do that, they may be nice looking for starters but will begin to be more annoying that usefull. Trails just for afterburners is much more better idea.

Yes, a DVD version of FS1.
It's been discussed in this thread in case you haven't noticed.

That looks pretty nice. Is the rendering code for that still in FS1 or FS2?

Actaually, I think the code was just in that version o fs1. It's not in fs2 I don't think.

Well, lots of games have engine trails like that, why shouldn't fs2?

You hit the nail right on the head, as usual. How do they curve?

And thanks, Goober - thanks, and Welcome to the HLPBB! :D ;) :p

The trails could use some work (Okay, a lot of work) but they could be made to look good in FS2_Open.

If The Beast Project is still running, talk to them. They might want to know how to do that (and touch it up;))

Two more afterburner pictures, with the ship turning.  The coolest shot of this is when you get killed by a shockwave while your afterburners are engaged.  Your ship spins around really fast and the afterburner effects are neat.  It's incredibly hard to get a screenshot of this, though, so I tried to approximate it in a test mission.  The result can be seen in picture 4.

Note: I had problems with direct image linking, so I moved all the pictures to a page on GeoCities.  They are all on this page:

that's interesting... only problem being they look pretty ugly. If they could be spiced up I'd appreciate that in the game

Yeah, if anybody is going to even think about using them for fs2, they need to be helped along a little. Maybe using 3d particles, smoke crap, it would look cool.

Title: 2 cents
Post by: Star Dragon on September 14, 2002, 03:15:16 pm
At least it's something!

But I think they should be used only when there is a reason for them. The output for an after burner on a fighter is not greater than the cruising power of a cap ship (why not trails for them now???) right?

Well I propose that trails be used for fights only in enviroments that would be more logical. Like in an atmosphere or nebulas!!! the curving effect IS awesome and that death spin realistic, but yeah I agree a little touch up would be great...

My humble opinion (Dodges fruuit and objects) :nervous:

Honestly, there are probably quite a number of things that are far more important, but then again, if the groundwork code is still there from FS1, it shouldn't take too long, right?

Are you talking about the bright lights that appeared on ships? I also think that looked very nice, but isn't that a Glide-only thing or something like that?

I'm not trying to impersonate anyone.  I use the nickname Sesquipedalian all the time, and I registered at the VWBB without knowing that there was anyone else who used that name.  When I registered here, I was surprised to see that someone had already claimed it.

Don't feel bad. I did the same thing over at F2S. I registered as Warlock, came over here and found out there was already a Warlock. And now I'm Hades.

because in every game i know of is that most of the stuff in game are in fact called spirts, and shaders, well maybe only in quake3 but that is what they called it in it

If you're talking about the self illumination sure that's possible... but the practicality is questionable. If the code is made to call a glide function or is programmed to be compatible with glide, you'll need to put in some effort to convert...

I doubt it's that didficult, basically, it's making certain colours to completly ignore shadows. the code is already in there, you stiill have the self illu entries in the ships tbls, damnit! that's what pisses me off so much, it exists, it's there, you can even see it!
