Title: IE 6 = Evil
Post by: Warlock on September 10, 2002, 01:44:56 pm
Ok .... as part of reinstalling everything known to man on my computer I upgraded the win98 base IE 4 to IE6 ,...and since then I get a freaking Error that shuts down and restarts IE like every 5 minutes it seems. Anyone else having issues with this damn thing ?

I used to get this all the time with IE5 but upgrading to version 6 fixed everything.

I used to get this all the time with IE6 but upgrading to Opera/Netscape/Mozilla fixed everything.

If you want a version of IE that works, IE5.5 with all the patches works at least enough to tolerate. I still prefer 3rd-party browsers though.

Looks like everyone I know has picked the short straw with browsers... my copy of IE6 has been clean and crisp since installing, same for 5.5.

Something I've found through experience: Never jump over versions when upgrading IE. It doesn't like it for some reason.

To update I.E. 4
Install IE4 SP1
Then install, 5.0, then 5.5, then 6.0. Its troublesome, but it keeps things stable.

It might work other ways sometimes but on legacy OS like 98, its best to do it the safe way.:blah:

:(  I'm depressed. Just thot I'd share that.

IE6 works fine...on all of my computers.  Although I think it did slow down my 166 when I installed it.  The others like it better than previous varients.

Opera == better

(netscape and IE both have spyware in them and Mozilla [the last version I used] was too slow....)

Ditto

I've said this many times (... not so many tmes here though) it depends on the System, the Windows, the aplications, the user etc. which version works the best (and this goes allmost for any software/hardware there is)

IE6 is still better browser than Operan in my opinion, both has their advantages and disadvantages. Personally I am using both, but IE is my primary browser.

You ppl really need to find out how to actually CHANGE settings in IE, Windows and in [put any other program here]. Far too often I have seen ppl blaming [put a software here] because they didn't like [put a feature here] and thus are using another software. And this all only because they haven't checked settings! Default ones are not perfect.

*Ranting over...*

Has anyone gotten the IE illegal operation error that never goes away no matter how many times you click it, making you have to either restart your computer or push it into the corner of the screen? I used to get that every few minutes (no exaggeration) with IE5 but the errors miraculously faded away when I switch to version 6.

I got that with Netscape 4.6 alot.... 4.8 seems to be working well though,... Just some webcontent like PHP doesn't work too well in Netscape 4.x and Netscape 7 is just a freaking IE with blue shading :D

well, I've always used IE, until I decided to get the new ultra-zoinky(tm) Netscape 7. Now, IE, seems to lock up after every five minutes or so. Not that I care.
