Title: Freespace 2 FTP Server - HOTU 2 Full
Post by: Fractux on July 09, 2003, 08:57:53 am
Download the HOTU version of FS2 (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=4150) here.

------ FTP SERVER ------
server: fractux.dyndns.org
port: 5959
status:
OFFLINE
--------------------------------[/size]
NOTE: this server is on a dynamic connection, so if the connection is dropped, the IP is most likely changing and could take several minutes to be updated.

Before proceeding, read the following instructions:

The HoTU version is 1.0. The most recent version number of Freespace 2 is v 1.2.

The first thing you should do, is download Karajorma's HotUv1.20Pack.rar (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/Downloads/HotUv1.20Pack.rar). Unrar the contents into the main FS2 directory, over writing the files.

For detailed information, check out Karajorma's Freespace Oracle (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/hotu.html) (his explanations are very clear).

What to do with the VP files on the FTP server

DELETE ALL FILES IN THE FOLOWING DIRECTORIES AND IN THEIR SUBDIRECTORIES IF THERE ARE ANY. (DO NOT DELETE ANY DIRECTORIES [FOLDERS])

DIRECTORYVP FILE
FS2\data\voicestu_fs2.vp
FS2\data\cbanimstangoX_fs2.vp [3 files]*
FS2\data\intelanimssmarty_fs2.vp
FS2\data\soundssparky_fs2.vp
FS2\data\musicwarble_fs2.vp
FS2\data\models sparky_fs2.vp
FS2\data\mapssparky_fs2.vp
FS2\data\interfacesparky_fs2.vp**
FS2\data\hudsparky_fs2.vp**
FS2\data\force feedbacksparky_fs2.vp
FS2\data\fontssparky_fs2.vp
FS2\data\effectssparky_fs2.vp

IMPORTANT: in order to run at 1024x768 you must download 'sparky_hi_fs2.vp'
as well, which contains the   hi-res interface and hud.

[/tt]

Want the Freespace movies?

------------------------------
FS2 open is required to run the .avi movies in game.

If you want to grab the FS2 cutscenes in .avi format, please grab them from this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,34806.0.html).

If you need the FS1 cutscenes for playing the FSPort, you can find them here (http://oregonstate.edu/~plankerj/FS1movies/).
-movie hosting provided by Kosh.
------------------------------

If you require the complete ISO's for FS2

(eDonkey 2000 links provided below)
*NOTE: The ISO's are v1.0. You need to apply the v1.2 patch (http://www.pxo.net/files/fs21x-12.exe) after installation

Sparky_hi is being uploaded as I speak and then I'll probably upload warble as that would mean that the three files that everyone wants the most are up.

Hiya, longtime lurker here.

I have all 3 cd's shared on emule as I type this. Been sharing it for a few weeks now. It's been a fairly popular file.
If you don't want to redownload the whole thing just let me know the files you want and I'll share them as well.

Well, what's the difference between sharing it on emule or sharing it via ftp?

I've had no luck finding it in stores. It's really too bad. Great game.

We do not share the complete game we share only the vp files

Currently the server has:

stu_fs2
tango3_fs2

and sparky_hi has been partially uploaded, and will be resumed later.

So any other files you have from the list:

warble_fs2.vp
tango1_fs2.vp
tango2_fs2.vp
smarty_fs2.vp

Hold off on the movie files for now.

sparky_hi_fs2.vp Contains the Hi -Res info for FS2. You need this to play in 1024x768 254MB
stu_fs2.vp Contains the voice files. 170MB
warble_fs2.vp Contains the music files 116MB
tangoX_fs2.vp 3 Files. Where X is 1 to 3. These contain the animations for the command briefings 311MB
smarty_fs2.vp The animations for the tech room. Probably the file you'll miss the least 120MB
Movie files The last 3 cut scenes were included (you'll only see 2 depending on whether you succeed or fail in the final mission) but the rest are missing 539MB

i tried downloading the sparky_hi res but i only got about 80 megs before my FTP client wouldnt let me download anymore... the same with tango 1 and stu_fs2.

Just a note, I've split the VP files into 4MB chunks so that if someone disconnects while D/L you won't have to start all over again, especially if your client does not support FTP resume function.

Meh... download SmartFTP. It has unlimited trial. It only gives an annoying popup at startup. But it does have resume support. I hate 4mb parts. I'm just glad I already downloaded everything! :D

I used to use that. Until one update crapped up my entire system. (It was definately Smart FTP cause I restored from a ghosted image and when I tried again the same thing happened).

I now use AceFTP (http://www.visicommedia.com/) instead.

With all the MVE2AVI conversions going I guess it wouldn't hurt to have them uploaded along with the missing vp-s.
BTW they are quite small - around 10-20 Mbytes - so freespace shouldn't be too much of an issue.

So, should this be included?

Quite a few of them are in fact less than 10MB each. Also, I'd be willing to help upload some of the avi's from freespace 2 if we do get approval for this.

This just occurred to me... have you guys been uploading pure .VP files, without zipping them? Cause I seem to recall that they can be compressed decently, though I can't check this ATM, being on the road and all.

Also, if you're gonna upload AVI's of the cutscenes, you should make sure that they are all encoded at the same bitrate, encoding method (1-pass, 1-pass quality based, 2-pass, multi-pass), the same version of DivX, and the same audio codec. Otherwise, you'll get wildly varying results in quality and compatability.

Post by: Fractux on July 17, 2003, 04:47:52 pm
Some people had uploaded the VP files, most were `rared` or zipped before hand.

right now, we have all the vp files except for sparky_fs2.vp .

I split them up after myselft anyways, but if you rar or zip them, make sure to test them before you upload just in case they get corrupted.

Activity has been pretty constant, more than 3GB downloaded since I last checked 3 days ago.

For some reason however, there are always a few people who forget to disable multiple connections. I don`t think i can make this any clearer short of making a animated gif with a huge warning.

Anyways feel free to upload whatever you want that is FS related.

I starting to lean how to use FRED and started to write out some missions I want to try. SEXP is pretty easy to work with, and I`m already having fun seeing how complex these missions can get :D. I`ve finally managed to be able to get the tools to get custom models from 3ds into .pov `s but I`m a real novice modeler so while I`ve got the basics, I`m just really starting to get into it.

Anyways, I`m glad I found this place, too bad It took me a couple years.. hehe :)

Cheers!

You can't play them with the standard FS2 but if you run FS2_open with the -dshowvid flag you can see them there. Otherwise your only option is to play them with a standard movie viewer like Media Player.

Of course you first have to use WinRAR to unpack the .rar files.

That looks like a standard busy response to me. There are already two people downloading files off of the server so there's no space for you.
The best thing to do is to get up in the middle of the night and try :) Shouldn't be anyone online then (depending on your time zone)

Keep trying. The connection gets refused if there are more than a couple of people already connected. It will eventually let you in.

Well to let everyone know, a tree branch fell outside and ripped the wires, so my phone lines don't work but, for some reason, the modem is still working.

So they are coming today to repair the lines, expect the server to be down most of the day.

I repeat, the server will be down today.

See, even in our basements we are not immune from good ole mother nature, though I think those pesky squrrels may have had somehting to do with it.

Cheers!

I've set up an account for modem users so that they don't take up a slot that can be used by those with a broadband connection.

Modem users take heed. :D

Well I`ve trashed the modem account.

The account was set up with a max of 5 KB/s, and give the broadband users a bit more bandwidth, and have 1 slot for the slow modem users, since I`m working with splitting up about 30KB of upstream bandwidth, but from my test yesterday, it seems that modem users are not bothering to read this, or not understanding. So I`ve put up the three slots at 9.1 KB/s. I my reduce it back to 2 again depending on the activity in the next period, and those with broadband will get more bandwidth if I do so.

Right now I'm back at home from the university. Until next term, I won't have access to snailnet. For about a month, I'll be stuck with snailnet (and  I can't even leave it on all night or all day). So, I'll have to wait until I go back to pester Fractux about giving me a temp account.

Just to let everyone know, the server has been going up and down because we've been reconfiguring the network. Once this is all finished then I'll post the new details in the first thread.

For now, the ftp server will be going up and down once in a while.

This bit is in my FAQ but I think it's a good idea to post it on this thread too.

HOW DO I VIEW THE CUTSCENES IN FS2_OPEN?

When Volition released the source code for FS2 they were forced to rip out the code for playing MVE format movies for copywite reasons. This means that FS2_Open can't play the cutscenes that came on the CDs. However new code for playing anything you can find a codec for has been added.
The cutscenes have been converted to avi format and can be found on Fractux's FTP server.

Unfortunately getting the cutscenes to work isn't as simple as bunging them on your hard drive. It's relatively painless though if you follow these simple steps.

i all ready do that but it dont play the movies
in the tech data base cutscenes i dont reach to the first movie in the campaing

Post by: karajorma on August 31, 2003, 02:44:20 am
Hang on a sec. You're trying to play them through the tech room? That won't work. It can be made to work if you download this table (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/Downloads/cutscenes.zip).  It's just the cutscene table with all the links renamed to .avi instead of .mve. You may have to play through the main campaign again to reactivate the movies.

Do you at least see the intro movie when you start up FS2_open? If you don't see the movie then something is wrong with your installation (play the intro movie in Media player and tell me if that works).

If you do see the intro movie in FS2_open the problem is simply that the game was looking for .mve files it couldn't play.
If that works but the cutscenes don't run from the tech room try

I don't see any of the movies either, but fs_open ain't working that good either so it's not that big a loss . You think the problem might lie in my pc not actually having the divx codec as I'm using ffdshow ("http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow") for my decoding needs?
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: karajorma on August 31, 2003, 05:53:04 am
I used Divx 5.0.5 for the cutscenes. You might have an earlier version. Or as you say the problem might be due to that.

the movie are avi IIRC, FS2 uses MVE, but MVE files are huge, so these are in avi. get the latest divx codec and use a media player of your choice, like winamp.

I'm using an ancient version of WSftpLE that doesnt seem to have an option for this "multiple connections" - though as I'm peaking at 13-14K transfer speed, I'm assuning I'm not doing this?

The VCD of all the freespace 1 movies is in the upload folder.  You should be able to play em in any media player, just click it. For the hard core fans you can burn it onto a cd as vcd format and if your dvd player supports it u can play it on your dvd player.

Yup...if your DVD player supports VCD playback.
For help on VCD burning and compatability go to www.vcdhelp.com

Check there for how to burn them and look up your dvd model to see compatability and feedback from others with your same dvd player on the best cd's to use and so on.

karajorma - Not sure it will play in freespace, the whole thing is and was meant as being just one video for the die hard vcd fans.  There are utilities out there to break apart and edit the video.

If you haven't spliced the mpeg files together when you made the VCD they should all be present as .dat files on the VCD which are easily convertable to mpg (in fact I think Media Player will play them without any changes).

As for not being able to connect it sounds like the server was simply busy (I just tried it and it was). It's just a case of trying every 20-30 minutes until you get lucky.

The FTP server has been down quite often as of late, but it'll be up much more often than it has for the past two weeks.

Also, note that you are not allowed to download files that are in the UPLOADS directory, so that's why they failed delivery.

The FS1 cutscenes are now available for downloads.

Make sure you are using passive mode with your ftp client and are loging in with the username 'freespacer'. If that's not it, then it's a problem with your network setup.

Chill out man, It wasn't a personal attack.

Since other people were connecting to the server without a problem, and you couldn't, then there was definitely not a problem with the server.

That's why I mentioned your network setup.

next time you go to say it's the other persons system messing up perhaps you should take into consideration the fact that some people here have many years of expirience with computers and have formal training in things ranging from comp sci to networking

when you talk to them and make a statement that makes the assumption that they haven't checked their network settings it tends to insult them

Once again, I was not calling you tech abilities into question.

But if you are going to say that telling a person who knows about network setups that there could be a problem on their end is insulting, than I'm afraid that the real problem is that your ego is much too easily hurt.

Because all it was intended as was a runthrough of what the problem could be because people have been connecting to the freespacer account without a hitch since October 7th.

Quote
well the server isn't stable

Actually, the server is very stable. As I mentioned before in this thread, the FS FTP server used to be on my box, and I was not leaving it up 24/7 prior to Oct.7th. Since then, it has been up almost 24/7 (it was rebooted once).

Usually people will not be able to connect for because all of the slots could be full. (which is generally the case)

And I'm going to end this on one final note.

THE DAMN SERVER IS FREE, SO IF YOU WANT TO ***** ABOUT ITS STABILTY OR HAVE 24/7 ACCESS, FIRST SEND ME SOME CASH TO HELP PAY FOR IT.

Great.  I finally get in (using Filezilla) and it bumps me out b/c of too many users :(

EDIT:  D'oh! I guess I should have edited my first post.  Sorry folks!

EDIT (2):  I finally got in, but I get the following error when I try to download the FS2 Avi's or Rar's of the movies:

Status:   Starting download of /Freespace_2_Movies/AVI_storage/bastion.avi
Command:   TYPE I
Response:   200 Type set to I.
Command:   PASV
Response:   227 Entering Passive Mode
Error:   Could not open the local file \bastion.avi
Error:   Download failed

Any idea what that means?

You can't download bastion.avi anymore, now it's bastion.rar.

I left the original avi files in the directory for storage, assuming that people were going to download the .rar files since they are slightly smaller.

Actually I moved the avi files into a folder called avi storage, but I forgot to hide it, and just as we speak someone is downloading the avi files again, instead of the rar files.

Why? I don't know. The size difference on some is negligable, but I'm going to hide that directory after anyways.

Cheers!

That's me, oops.  Sorry.  I'll begin d/l the rar's.  I didn't see a difference and didn't think it was going to work, either.  But it's working now, thanks!

Ok, downloading the rar's.

Someone help me out here because it's Monday morning and I'm teaching Prolog to undergrads. So my brain is fairly swiss cheesed. I own Freespace 2. Fairly obviously, since I've been on these boards for 9 billion years.

So if I want a 100% complete and working backup of my treasured FS2 disks where do I go. In bullet format. So I don't have to trawl through the whole of this thread.

Thanks guys. Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum and all that...

Edit: Out of interest, can I just clone the CDs I have? :o

Post by: Fractux on October 27, 2003, 01:06:02 pm
If you have your original CD's don't bother downloading anything from the FTP server. There is nothing new there you don't already have.

So, if you want backup copies, open up your CD Burning sofware, and then click on the "COPY CD" option that should be present in mostly all CD burning software made for Windows.

Very simple proceduce. Read the help files included with your sofware if you are unclear, that's what they are there for.

Cheers!

You can even hand out full copies of the CDs to friends and aquaintances on a no-cost non-profit basis - completely legally! :D

Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: Fractux on November 01, 2003, 10:03:49 pm
You can type in anything for a password and it will work.

The FTP is currently full.

and I see that someone is attempting to logging in with the name "Freespacer" and not "freespacer"

It has to be written correctly as well, or it will not work.

Read the directions carefully.

Actually the endgame vid for fs1 is under the fs2 movies folder.. it's endgame.rar. The file I can't find is lab.avi. There's a reference to it in the fs1 movie table, but the file isn't on the server.

I though I had moved out endgame. Thanks for pointing that out.

And you're right in noting that lab.avi isn't in there. Just going to d/l it and then post it.  Thanks karajorma.

Hm.  If I want to download all of the vp's, it takes a -long- time.  I leave FileZilla unattended.  Is there a way to make it disconnect from your server after downloading all of the items in the queue?  It's kind of harsh to be banned for two days for that, since it's accidental idling on my part.

Read the first post again. It tells you exactly what (it`s in yellow) to do if you are using filezilla.

Hence why I asked people to read the whole post in it`s entirety.

Sorry for my odd question maybe, but with the limited access and bandwith and the o so many users i ask if it is possible to start a BitTorrent run. Perfect loadbalancing and everybody can get the 3 CD's and an archive with the cutscenes in avi format. Please your thoughts on that...

My apologies.... I connected to the FTP server to get the AVI cutscenes since I don't know how to convert the MVe's to AVI yet. I accidentally left the keep alives on (In fact I disconnected them, but rerunning the application dind't keep my settings properly) and since I went to sleep while downloading I had to get disconnected by the ADMIN.  Now I'm banned with reason....

Hopefully not forever right??
It's practically my last best hope for.........getting those movies!

I'm currently downloading all of the files on the FS2 FTP.  Why?

I know someone who has a website, and he gave me an an account on his 'deathwinds.hosted' section.  I'd like to know if I could put all the files up on that server as an FS2FTP alternitave.  He gave the the okay, but I'd rather have you tell me it's okay to go through with it.

...This download is going to take all day.  x.x'
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: karajorma on November 30, 2003, 04:27:18 pm
Well a large portion of the files were uploaded by me so you certainly have permission to put up all the avi movies and since all the .vp files are from FS2 there's no reason why you couldn't put those up too. Besides Fractux is working on his big bad FS2 full install anyway so I doubt he'd mind :)
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: Agent on November 30, 2003, 04:42:01 pm
One question. How do we install this? I downloaded the files for Sparky_hi but I have n clue how to install them? Couldn't you simply upload the whole VP file  instead of dividing it into small pieces?
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: karajorma on November 30, 2003, 04:53:35 pm
If the files are split you are most likely dealing with a multipart rar file. In this case you'll want to use WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com/) to decode them.

The files can be several megs smaller when RARed and it's easier to recover from a dropped connection this way so it's a smart idea.
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: Johnmike on December 01, 2003, 06:30:21 am
I ask permission and you tell me ways to make it better.  Yay.

I'd put it in rar form, but compared to WinZip, little people have it.

...Even though I prefer Rar any day.

Perhaps I could use SFX?  (Rar Exe)
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server

rar exe should be perfect. i really don;t care, tar.gz would be fine too, but anything that resembles an exe would be best.

Kay.  It'll take me a long while to get it download, sorted, and uploaded.  Give me a month.  At least.  My (genius) dad keeps turning FileZilla off.  e.e'

Say, do you think you could give me a username on your FTP?  If that's not possible, I understand, due to your limited bandwith.  But since I'm downloading everything so that I can lighten the load on your FTP server, I think it'd help me quite a bit.

My mom's not as ingenius as my dad, so she lets me turn FileZilla when she's on the computer at night.  The only problem is that after 7:00 Eastern Time it's congested.  x.x'  This normally wouldn't be a problem, but I only download at 15 kbps.

Edit:

Ack!  My friend is using ASP to let you download the files using Download.SendBinary to do it.  But it doesn't work for exe's.  Any ideas?
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: Fractux on December 02, 2003, 09:00:08 am
I'll set up an account for you when I get home today, and check your PM's for your username and password.

This is what I'll do, since you are going to get the files hosted again. For a while I'll lower the d/l rate of the freespacer accounts, and give you an acount that'll hit 30kbps.

I'll give you the details when I get the account set up.

Cheers!

[If you are having problems getting people to d/l the .exe file just .zip it]

Alright, I've downloaded everything.  You can delete my account now.  Thanks again, I appreciate it. -Edit- ****.  I just realised now what happens when my great dad turns off FileZilla and things don't finish.  Damaged archive.  Arhg.  x.o  Give me a little while longer in the download department.  Don't delete my usename just yet. -/Edit-

First off, visit http://www.Deathwinds.com  Random spam for my friend, going to host the files if it works.

Second, is there anything else I can upload?  I'd be willing to see if I can get a few other files hosted, too.

Lastly, can you tell my when the FSFTP is updated?  I can do it myself every so often, but still.

Thankies.

OK cool. Message me when you are done.

Also, I just wanted to point out that you should not host any Fresspace 1 stuff other than the movies, because they are available from download at fileplanet.

[Which is what I was thinking of doing with the FS2 VP files. I don't know why I didn't think about this before... sheesh!!]

But also, you don't have to host the Battlecruiser Millenium folder... that is not even for this game... heh.. it's for BCM [ www.3000ad.com ]

Props to you! Let me know when you are finished. Cheers!

Hi there, I'm new here. Big fan of the original Freespace, and been looking unsuccessfully for FS2 since I last saw it in a bookstore 2 years ago...

But lo and behold, Underdogs was hosting it!! I'm installing the required files now from the FTP server.

I would just like to give a shout out to the host of the FTP server, the ones responsible for making this space-sim classic finally widely-available, and the Freespace 2 community at large. YOU GUYS ROCK!!! Never have I seen a game community remain so active and *productive* since the Half-Life or MMORPG communities, and that's saying something, as those have the advantage of a much larger player base. There's all sorts of cool things to download, the documentation and support is excellent - I feel like I've stumbled into a gold mine ;)

So thank you - your hard work is appreciated by myself and many others who haven't had the time or opportunity to express their gratitude.

The FTP server wouldn't be here if this community wasn't so productive and active in making FS2 into what it has become.

Hello all!

I aquired FS2 just resently.

But now I am trying to get the missing files.

I am using Total Commander 6 for ftp. But now I have some problems.
The only thing that I need to enter which I don't know is the session field.

Does anyone knows what I should enter there?

I have included an image with all the settings that I do know:

Good News.

More bandwidth is now available for the Freespace content on the FTP server.

I now have 3 slots available, each with a max of 18.6 KB/s d/l speed.

Rejoice!  (ok, well not really :D )

If they work fine in Media Player post your question in the Source Code Project forum cause it's a bug in FS2_open and needs looking at.

If they only play for a couple of seconds and then stop in media player then I suspect you have Divx 5.02. The movies were encoded using Divx 5.05 and that's exactly the behaviour you see if you're using an outdated codec.

i don't know about bittorrent server-side and i dont have the package fractux is serving. but bittorrent itself is kinda easy. you just select a folder/directory or zip/rar file and bittorrent will make a hash-file of it (~20KB). Now other people only download that file and the bittorrent-app of the first user will act as a hub/server/seed. download starts from the first seeder. As soon as some chunks/parts are downloaded by other bittorrent users that users become a server too. The more people, the more the bandwith is averaged over the various users. And i've seen it, it generally comes down to downloading at your max cable/adsl speed :-) when the chunks fly in from all over the net.
http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/introduction.html
So, at least one person has to offer the complete package to start it, and the torrent file needs to be hosted on a tracker.

I am using the build in FTP program of the file manager called Total Commander (way better than anything Macrofracture came up with).

And it is set to passive mode (look at the screenshot I attached).
As session I have filled in "fs2 download."
The rest is the same as in the screenshot.

Ok, maybe I should use Filezilla... Or maybe it is the network I am attached to...

Well Give filezilla a try, and if you still can't get through check that your firewall isn't blocking traffic through port 21.

Wheee!

I managed to get in!
So it was my firewall (I am still figuring why, it isn't blocked).

But I do get 2.3kb/s...
Well the important thing is that I can download this now!

any updates on when the whole thing will be uploaded? That is i mean the fs2 ~800 mb file, or still having trouble finding a place to upload? I may have a place you may be able to upload but i would have to check it out in detail first.

Singh, first a list of questions for you.

Have you enabled passive ftp?
Have you disabled Multiple connections?
Are you connecting to the right port? (6969)

If it's not that, can you post the exact message filezilla is giving you?

Also use suggested password (1234) I logged on last week succesfully to get sparky_hi, so the ftp works :-)

dunno how many have access to a *nix machine, but it has a nice bare bones FTP client in it.  Ofcourse, there are a few problems with this little post..
One : Most people use Windows, but you guys have Filezilla :P
Two : Most who use *nix prolly already know how to use it's FTP client.

The nice thing is, though, ftp is automatically in passive FTP mode.  And it doesn't auto-reconnect.

If you don't know how, just go to a terminal (windowed or crtl+alt+f#) and type

ftp username@gaming.playnow.ca 6969

and hit enter.  (for the anon's, it just ``ftp freespacer@gaming.playnow.ca'')

from there, it will ask for your password.  Input the password (it won't show up) and hit Enter.  (For freespacer's, you just hit enter there.)

There'll be a few messages including a "We're back!!" thing.  You're in.
From there, type

ls

and hit enter to get a list of files and directories in the current directory.
Each line 'll look something like this :

drwxr-xr-x   1 ftp      ftp             0 Oct 05  2003 Freespace_2_VP_files

All that stuff is:
"drwxr-xr-x" This indicates that it is a directory.  You can 'cd' to it.
"-rw-r--r--" or "-rwxr-xr-x" This indicates that it is a file.  You can 'get' it.

From there, type

cd dir_you_want_to_go_to

EG, if I wanted to go to the "Freespace_2_VP_files" dir, I simply type

cd Freespace_2_VP_files

and hit Enter.  It will spit out some stuff like
250 CWD command successful. "/Freespace_2_VP_files" is current directory.
That just says "It worked.  You are at...".  Now, ls again, and cd to the dir of the files you want.
Now, to get all those files, you need to make sure you're in binary mode.  This is simple, too.  Type

bin

and hit enter.
Next, you may find it just a /bit/ convenient to turn off the prompt (so you won't be bugged every time one of the segments finishes ;)  Just type

prompt

and it should say that something was turned off.  Now, you can grab the files.  Let's say I wanted to grab the sparky_hi_fs2.vp files.

cd sparky_hi_fs2_vp
ls

Well, there's a lot of files in there, starting with ``sparky_hi_fs2.part01.exe'' and ending with ``sparky_hi_fs2.part33.rar''.  Well, we don't want to have to get all of them, sooo....

mget sparky_hi_fs2.part*.*

Now wait just a darned tootin' minute!  Where'd that mget command come from?!
mget is for ``mass get''.  The astrisks are special characters that can stand for any number of any characters.  There fore, all the numbers will be accounted for, and so will both `exe' and `rar'.  Nifty, eh?

Oh, you want to get root_fs2?  You can just use the regular get, there.

get root_fs2.exe

Easy.
After that, you just wait, since it /will/ take a while.
If you forget about it after it finishes and idle too long, you get logged off the server automatically.

To exit ftp, just type

bye

and ftp will say "bye bye..." and quit.

Questions?  Comments?  Things I forgot?  This is by no means a super tutorial, and I don't know how many of you 'll actually benefit from this, but there you go.

Enjoy!
~Atal

edit : misspelled "prompt"... silly me... <.<

INFORMATION UPDATED FEB. 8, 2004 1436EST

------------------------------------
SERVER STATUS: ONLINE
------------------------------------

The VP files and movies on the FTP server have been removed.

This had to be done because of interplay's decision to re-release FS2 to reap a pretty penny off us [not that you weren't paying more if you wanted to buy a used copy, but I still feel like complaining].

Here's where you can get FS2 (http://www.interplay-store.com/product.asp?part_no=FG-W58-1176-1&find%5Fcategory=&find%5Fdescription=&find%5Fpart%5Fdesc=&IPPC=pp_540)

Sorry guys. But what can you do. Contact me if you require some more information.

I'm planning to put the FTP server to use as a file store for SCP installable packages that I'll put together.

Cheers!

Did you get a notice from Interpay?

Anyhow i guess those 2000 copies they plan will be out of stock soon and hopefully the FTP can be online again. (does this put straight that they still own the rights for FS2 (if they re-re-release it))

Post by: karajorma on February 09, 2004, 03:55:59 am
I don't think that HotU or Fractux got a warning. But sometimes it's better not to wait. Since Interplay are selling copies from their website again it could hardly be considered abandonware anymore could it?

Well from the link to the store i get that it is a
One-Time-special-"20th-aniversary"-2000-copies-only-edition
i hardly call that a re-release. I guess it is best to keep FTP low
for a while...

Cool. Btw, Fractux, you've probably noticed that stuff has reached a new stage with 3.6 - it's closer than ever. We're getting there... by the time it's ready, this Anniversary Edition may even be out of print. ;)

I'm just going to add a dump of all the files on the server every time I update, so people can peruse what's on there.

With the FS2 stuff down for now, there's not much traffic anyways.

Thanks, Fractux.

I forgot if I'd mentioned this already (or if anyone else has), but for the FTP-uninitiated, you can simply use IE's FTP client to get to Fractux's archive; simply stick this address in your address bar and you're there.

Juat as a side note, when I was fooling around trying to make an installable package, I made a media VP containnig all of the "finished" on Milliways (Lightspeed's site), so, well, just telling anyone who would be interested in grabbing it, since the 3.56c VP is a bit out of date.

I made this on my own, it's not an unofficial SCP vp. Just making that clear.

It's 25MB compressed - 175 Uncompressed.

Cheers!

If this contains Lightspeeds new weapons I very strongly reccomend making a new folder called Enhanced (or something similar) and using the -mod switch to point at it. You'll get all sorts of problems if you don't most likely.
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: Fractux on March 17, 2004, 09:58:44 am
no, I didn't put any of his weapons mods in the VP, only the planets, shinemaps, glowmaps, 32bit textures. bobs-lights thrusters, and the ani perseus gowmap.

I didn't put in any of the WIP stuff.

Hi All,

Would like some advise...got both FS1/ST, finally found a copy of FS2 and now have FS2_open. Naturally I want to play the open version...now what would be the best course of action to see the movies too...ask nicely? lay low and wait till they're back up?  Guess they'll reappear eventually, but like to ask anyway...

but aside from trying to get the (illegal) converting software yourself, you're best chance is to either wait, or ask someone who has the avi's to transfer them to you...

I'm a bit confused about this...I understood that anything to create mve's is illegal, but I've never seen the same statement been made about players utilizing existing, published code...yet.

If Interplay is so deadset on its rights on the format, than I suspect I can safely assume that publicly available descriptions of the format, still present on the web today, are not violating their copyright...otherwise they would habe been forced to take this down by now, not?

FWIW, about half an hours worth of googling found sourcecode for a demuxer and a player readily available from various locations.

erm, anything decoding the MVE's that isn't made by Interplay is illegal. Any owner of published info on the format should have been sent legal letters, according to history.

FIRST POST.
Yeah I'm not gonna waste youre time making my own "look at me I'm new and stupid" post. And sorry if you already answered this question earlier in this thread, but right now Im on a tight schedule and I dont have that time. I'm "making my one legal backup copy" of FS2 and "accidentally leaving it at my friend's house", along with two other CD's full of mods. i assume you guys get what I mean. Anyway, my Tango1.vp on the CD is corrupted, so I cant get it onto my comp for burning. I know its MASSIVE, but if its possible at all, could someone give it to me? I have no IRC or site to give you an upload to. That sentence probably proves I have no idea how IRC works, but...yeah. So could anyone do this as a favor? FS2 fan to FS2 fan? Hopefully its legal. But knowing the law, its not. Just wondering...

Actually you can make as many copies as you want for your friends perfectly legally because there is a clause in the EULA that lets you. :)

Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: Cire on July 04, 2004, 12:45:05 pm
Hi, first I wanna say thanks for the great FTP, it makes freespace 2 much better than the lobotomized, featureless HOTU version. I'm having one problem, though, and that's with the movies. I downloaded them, in .zip format, and when I try to extract them with WinRAR, it gives me the following error:

!   C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\freespace_2_movies\intro.zip: Unknown method in intro.avi
!   C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\freespace_2_movies\intro.zip: No files to extract

Is there any fix for this, or will I have to download the files again? Hopefully not, as I'm stuck on a 56k modem and don't want to do another overnight download....
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: karajorma on July 04, 2004, 03:14:24 pm
Hmmmm. Sounds suspiciously like a corrupted download to me unfortunately. You could try another program (or if you're on ME or greater try windows own unzipping functions) and hope it's a little more fault tolerant than winRAR.
Title: Problem with movies
Post by: Se7enForce on July 05, 2004, 08:41:52 am
I'm having the same problem as Cire. The movies won't decompress. I've tried using Window's own decompression function, WinRar, Winzip, and even StuffIt. They all give me the same message that the files have an unknown decompression format. I find it unlikely that both Cire and I had all 11 of the movie files corrupted during download when other Freespace 2 files I downloaded in the same session are fine.

I'm thinking the files were either compressed in a format none of the above programs can read, or they are corrupt. Is there any other way of getting these movie files (other than the obvious)? Could they be re-uploaded to the ftp server by some kind soul?  A response from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Just on a whim I decided to try using the newest version of winzip and that worked! Winzip 8.0, WinRar, and StuffIt wouldn't work, but Winzip 9.0 did. Thanks for the suggestion Pence. Cire, if you're reading this just go to www.winzip.com and grab 9.0.

Sorry, guys, i haven't been around lately.

EDIT: I know what the problem is. I used 7zip to compress some of the files into zip format using bzip2 compression method. I don't remember which files I recompressed, but this is the only thing I did differently. I'll do some more testing and recompress the files into regular zip format.

Cheers!

Well, I came home afer 2 days to find a nice warning message that a very nasty trojan had been found on my computer, which is being used as the temporary ftp server. Seems a friend of my brother's has been looking at some "questionable" sites when he's come over to my place, and installed this (unintentionally of course). Time to lock the computer again :)

Anyways, the FTP may not be up until tomorrow, or later today if i get everything assessed and back up.

Quick question about the FTP server.  I found the HotU download about a year and a half ago, downloaded it and really liked Freespace.  However, I got some files corrupted or something, and when I went to re-download it, only to discover it was temoprorarily removed due to Interplay's anniversary edition.  Anyway, I got frustrated with not having it recently, and googled Freespace 2 in an attempt to find another download site.  I ended up here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/freespace2.html), and decided to recheck the HotU link, as the site said the download was up.  Managed to re-acquire FS2 (two days ago actually) and started playing it again, in my spare time (such as it is).  However, I've discovered that if I bump the difficulty level up higher than easy, it would be very nice to have the voice files (one example is the third real mission, where I ran into a situation of I was dueling an NTF cruiser - and nearly getting killed by it - without needing to, because I'd ignored the text messages on top, which told me Psamitik had jumped in and would handle the cruisers.)

I've been trying to access the FTP server for the past several days, but every time I try to it prompts me for a password.  I put in 1234, and it prompts me again, and repeats this process 8-10 times, before telling me "The FTP session was terminated".  What am I doing wrong?  (or has the server just been too busy every time I've checked?)

What program are you using to access the FTP?

Post by: Fractux on July 21, 2004, 11:39:52 am
The FTP server is almost full 24/7, so it is difficult to connect to.

Make sure of the following things in your ftp client:

1] Passive FTP is enabled.
2] Multiple client connections are disabled.

Also note, the ftp might go of line tonight for a few days due to a change to our domain.

Cheers!

Heh, that would explain the extreme slowness.

Lets hope my download is finished before you shut 'er down :doubt:

I'm using IE to try to do it.  O well.  I guess I'll get on sooner or later.

Varus i'm having exactly the same problem.  It continuously prompts me for passwords after i've already entered 1234, then after a few tries it comes up:
Quote
Windows cannot access this folder.  Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access this folder.
Details: The FTP session was terminated.

I've been trying for around an hour now but it keeps doing that.
Title: Try something else?
Post by: nedski on July 22, 2004, 12:25:54 pm
Can I suggest you guys try a better ftp client than just using IE?  You don't have much control over options (e.g. PASV, connection limiting) with it, and there are a lot of files, so I would imagine it's going to be a nightmare to download with.

I scheduled all the folders I needed to download using FTPVoyager and just left it to run.  There are other FTP clients like that too.

To make it easier for everybody, the status of the FTP server will now be displayed on the front page, so if you can connect it will tell you.

And if the server is down, i won't have to come back and update it.

Another question - I finally managed to get on (again, using IE for it, don't have other stuff), and I got stu_fs2 started, which I'm really happy about.  (stu and warble are my priorities.  high res would be nice, but I doubt my machine could handle it.  I'm still using a PII 330 MHz, 128 mb ram so I'm the type of machine FS2 was designed for).

However, shortly after starting the download, the server kicked me out, preventing me from even browsing the other files, much less downloading them.  Its still continuing the file transfer though.  Any idea what I might have done wrong?

Maybe IE is using an extra connection to browse the files whilst downloading?

Maybe it considers browsing and downloading as two seperate tasks and therefore you can only do one at a time.

Post by: Fractux on July 23, 2004, 01:35:21 pm
IE probably did try to initiate another conection, as repeated attempts to make additional connections result in an automated 5 minnute temporary ban on any connections.

You really should get an FTP client so you don`t have to deal with all this needless hassle.

Geeze what am I doing on the computer, I`m supposed to be relaxing out here... see you guys later :)

Finally got on the broadband server, with FTP Voyager.  :)

Took a long time, but I got all of the ones I wanted for now (didn't download the movies, but I don't care that much about them.  Also, with all the files, my hard disk is down to a whopping 468 MB free - the wonders of a P2-330 Mhz, 128 MB ram and a 9.3 gig hard drive.  Got to love ancient technology)

That leads me to a question - is it possible to somehow re-create CDs so I don't need all the *.vp's on the hard disk, but can somehow run them off a CD?  (yes, my super old computer DOES have a CD burner,  and a somewhat new one, which is probably worth more than the entire rest of the system put togeather).

Also, will FS2 automatically use the high-res files, or do I need to go somewhere to tell it to use them?

Thanks to Molish for setting this up.

Also, one individual with IP 129.*.*.* has been continually trying to connect to the server. When you try to connect in rapid succession, you get a temp ban. You are essentially continually banning yourself. So give it up.

Set your connection rate to higher intervals so this does not happen. try to connect every 30 seconds or so ok?

My log files are getting huge. So stop it.

Cheers!

My pleasure Fractux.
You helped me, now I want to help everyone else out there.
Special thanks to karajorma for making is possible, he helped me configure the test the FTP server.

I figured this might help pull some of the stress off your FTP, and I get to help pass around one of the best flight sims to date. It's a win-win situation.

BTW, my FTP has 10 slots open (maybe will open more, depending on weather or not it's needed) with a bandwidth of 200K (hey, it's as fast of an upload as my poor little ADSL can handle). ONLY ONE CONNECTION PER IP ADDRESS PLEASE! (it's set up like that, but if I see you continually trying to connect 2 or more I'll kick your 1st connection and ban your IP for a week.)

Have fun, and thanks for YOUR help in letting me play a game I've been dieing to play for over 3 years!

2. the version offered by underdogs is/was a warez "rip" from 1999 for sure and if you doubt that i will do a byte count with the original rip i have.

Question about the AVI movies: What codec do I need to watch them, or better yet,how can I convert them to their original format so they can be viewed in the game itself?
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server

They are in DivX I believe.  You can't convert them back, thay are available so that FS2_open can play them, so if you want to see them you have to install it - See karajorma's post for a FAQ link.

As far as I'm concerned I don't see much of a difference between ISO's of Freespace and the FTP which is tolerated by the admins but the admins have to tread the fine line of not being seen to be allowing Warez to be pushed on their site.

The result is things like the FTP (which isn't a direct link) tends to get away with it while things like your post are complained at.

However considering that Interplay are in no position to complain we may see the admins being more lenient this time round.

First of all i want to say Hi to everybody here!

I own the Polish version of FS2, and its quite annoying to play since i don't understand what they are saying and what is written.

Just wondering if there is anything i can rip from my polish version?

Also a problem with my ftp:

I'm downloading from Molishes server and i'm downloading the voice files. You know how they are split into 4mb segments? Well sometimes my ftp program says that they are complete even though they finished at say 77%. Heres a screenshot:

As you see, out of 9 parts i only successfully downloaded 4 (the bottom one is still downloading). Can somebody tell me how to fix this?

I'm using 3DFTP v7.0

Avg speed of 12kb/s by the way.

Thanks everyone

I'm not 100% certain of this since I've only ever used the english version but simply replacing the root_fs2.vp with this one (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/Downloads/root_fs2.rar) should make all the text appear in English.

If the speech is also translated into Polish download stu_fs2.vp to get the english language files.

If neither of those work then the problem is a registry entry but I'm not certain which one. Downloading and applying the registy entries from the FTP should solve that as a side effect anyway if that's the case.

Title: Can I generate the FS Open avi files myself?
Post by: amitskaw on July 30, 2004, 07:52:58 pm
I have my very own copy of FS2.  It even more or less works, although cobbling disk 2 together was a right pain in the ass.  However, I would rather play FS2-open, what with all the cool bells and whistles,  and I'd like to do so with all the fancy shamancy media and movies.

As I understand it, one of my options is to download the media from the ftp server kindly provided, provided I intersect it at a time it is available.  This is likely to take forever, twice-- once in the waiting, and once in the downloading, and seems wastefull, as I have all the media files _right here_, where, if only I knew how, I could generate my own, thus saving bandwidth for others and time and frustration for mysel.  If I only knew how.

So how?  I tried something called mve2avi version 2.4 and got results that were entirely crapulent, at either frame rate (the playback stutters, and the speed is wrong, and the audio has all kinds of issues).  Is there another problem?  Or am I just doing it wrong, as every girl I've ever met feels compelled to point out?

Greets amitskaw.

I didn`t create the avi files hosted. Karajorma was kind enough to convert them all, so I couldn`t give you any pointers as to the conversion process.

Pose this question in these forums, and I`m sure someone will give you an answer.

Molish will be hosting the avi files on his ftp as well, so you should have a better chance at getting them now than you would have before.

Problem:
Molish decided it would be a good idea to get alittle drunk the night he was suppose to transfer the FTP to the laptop on his network (to free up system resources on his computer).
This did not work out well, and the laptop is a windows 2000 machine, so that complicated matters further.
there for, Molish's FTP server will be down for about a day untill I get sober and actually figure out the networking for windows NT (2000).

First things first, I need to sleep and eat some food (not in that particular order).

*I know I'll regret posting this in the morning. But atleast you know the truth. :) *

EDIT: Molish (though abit drunk and constantly speaking in 3rd person) has figured out a Fix for the FTP server. It is back up and running WITH the new movies.
Have fun all.  :D

PS The new FTP should be EXACTLY like Fractux's FTP server. Let me know if I'm missing anything. :D

Cool.  Okay, I'm going to take the next couple of days of my life, and try this during the periods my hand starts to hurt, and then I will report back.  If I get results I'm really pleased with (or, if I get a chance to see the existing results and decided that mine, while poor, are better, or if I just feel like it because I want to be able to take credit for a worthless contribution) I'll create a bit torrent file for them and try to distribute my results.

Incidently, a may work but kludgey as all hell work around:

When you should have gotten a new movie, switch the .exe to the original fs2 file, start it, watch in tech room, the quit and switch back.  FS2_open pilot files seem to crash the came at mission load, but not before.

You know I've just realised that I forgot to mention that the movie code is infact broken on any build released after 3.6.

But they are supposedly working on a fix so it's still worth converting the scenes as I doubt it will take them long to get everything running again :)

I also forgot to mention that my Google search turned up a AVI2MVE program :D Now that we have FS2_Open we don't need it that much but I suppose there may be some people out there with HotU and a machine that doesn't like FS2_Open :)

What I see in the console is (translated from norwegian):

Response:  200 Type set to A.
Command:  LIST
Error:  Transfer channel couldn't be opened. Reason:
Error:  Couldn't recieve directory listing.

Someone just brought to my attention that they were unable to connect to my FTP server and were receiving this message
"Connection fail: You are not welcome on this server"
That’s because I banned your IP address for spamming multiple connections (and constantly spamming them). The auto-ban feature is awesome on this FTP server (THANKS FRACTUX!). When I see someone on the auto-ban listing, I make it permanent.

If you want your ban lifted, contact me either here (PM or on this thread, I don't care) or on my ICQ at 209-589-089, and we will discuss lifting the ban. Be forewarned, if I see it happen again I will make the ban PERMANENT.

EDIT: Another warning, when the storms came thorugh a tree feel on my power lines and I lost power for a good LONG while. Well, they got power back but now I got no DSL! Must have screwed up the lines bretty bad, I called SBC and told them, but they won't have a crew out here untill Monday of next week. Till then, no FTP guys. I'm sorry  :(
I promise I'll have it back by Monday, so don't count me outta the loop just yet. For those of u who were getting my stuff recently, I was running it on a friends computer, but they can't handel the bandwith for the server, so I had to get rid of it over there.

That sucks, especially considering your FTP was the only one that worked for some people (including me).

A question about FileZilla. Is it possible to specify in which directory you want to download the stuff into? That would decrease the amount of unnecessary moving files around (this is especially annoying for me since the default directory is on a different hard drive than where I need to move the files, and moving such large files from hard drive to another takes some time and tends to lock up Windows Explorer).

Hope I am not going to get in trouble for this but I think I know why the 'main' (the one thats listed first) (Fractux) doesn't work for most people.

[gst102@andromeda gst102]$ ftp gaming.smoothkruger.ca 6969
Connected to smoothkruger.ca.
220 Fractux's Temp FTP
Name (gaming.smoothkruger.ca:gst102): freespacer
331 Password required for freespacer.
Password:
230 User freespacer logged in.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
ftp> passive
Passive mode on.
ftp> ls
227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,0,4,27,62).
ftp: connect: Connection timed out

The problem I think it the server is behind a firewall / NAT and so reports and internal IP address in response to the passive command.
Obviously external people can't connect to this ip address and it times out.
I checked and if I manually do it using telnet I can open the data connection and get a listing, however doing this for files would be hard (might be able to do it with ncat or something).

I guess any body who it works for has a 'broken' client which disreguards the ip part of the passive command and just looks at the port and connects to the orriginal server.
If anyone knows of such a client I would like to know.

Otherwise some ftp servers can be told their external ip address, if this can be done it would make it work for everyone.

Regards
Gary

Since we switched domains recently, I for got to change the dynamic ip checker of the ftp server to check the new domain. It should be working now, but let me know.

As some of you may already know, THE FTP IS BACK ONLINE!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
SBC is a good internet company (in my eyes). Not only have the fixed my problems in the past (almost a day after I called, except this time becuase so many people had problems becuase lighting struck something important), but they were EXTREAMLY helpful with other things.

But anyway, the FTP IS OPEN!! :)

Windows 98's registry editor refuses to import the registry keys available from the ed2k page, claiming that they are not valid registry scripts. Help?

I found that the registry scripts on the FTP worked on XP but not on ME. Anyway.

http://www.randomtiger.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/freespace/Launcher5.rar

Run the FS2_Open version of the launcher. Should fix all your registry problems.

Post by: Fractux on August 10, 2004, 08:45:22 am
these are keys i exported from the XP registry.

Here's whaty you can try and do.

At the top of the registry file it says:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Delete that line and then add it to the registry.

That should work.

Windows still says they aren't registry scripts. The launcher worked OK, though - thanks for the link.

We'll if everything is working alright for you, then that's alright. You can always copt and paste the content in notepad and save it as a .reg and try tto add it that way, though I doubt that that's the source of the problem (if it is, it would be wierd).

Cheers!

I still have two problems. Firstly, if I delete the files from the /data subfolders and put the VPs in the main directory as instructed in the text file available from the FTPs, FS2 crashes to desktop on startup. Secondly, I cannot patch the game with the patch available from the FTPs, even if I replace fs2.exe with the retail fs2.exe available from the FTPs. From the error message, it appears as if I have the wrong version. I'd look what is available at the official FS2 site, but it appears to be down.

(Edit: I looked at FSDoc and noticed the alternate patch link from Nodewars. I'll promptly test if it works.)

(Edit: It doesn't.)

If you've downloaded the root.vp from the site you don't need to patch. The EXE that comes with HotU is v1.2. The root vp on the FTP is also 1.2 so there is nothing that needs updating.

As for deleting the files. Which vp files have you downloaded? Are you sure you didn't miss one? Here's what you should have.

# root_fs2.vp
# sparky_fs2.vp
# sparky_hi_fs2.vp
# stu_fs2.vp
# tango1_fs2.vp
# tango2_fs2.vp
# tango3_fs2.vp
# smarty_fs2.vp
# warble_fs2.vp

Anything missing? You can also remove the  tangoA_fs2.vp and tangoB_fs2.vp files.
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: Shades on August 11, 2004, 10:51:45 am
I didn't download sparky_fs2.vp because the Oracle didn't list that as missing. That must be it. Thanks for the help.
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: karajorma on August 11, 2004, 11:30:04 am
:D I listed the missing ones as the minimum download you can get away with. If you want to delete your data folder completely you need all the files.

That said now that more people have broadband and there are two servers I should update the oracle to reflect that fact :)

Opps.....
Ok, some moron shut down the laptop like, 5 days ago and I never realized it.
I got the laptop hosting the FTP server tucked away under some stuff on my shelf in the back of my computer room and I just assumed everything was still going ok, haven't had too much time to check it recently.

Well, I noticed yesterday that my network wasn't doing much. No biggie, I figured no on was on the FTP. So I go to check on it and to my suprise, the damn thing wasn't even on!

Don't know who turned off my Laptop, but I'll beat em down for all of you out there who haven't gotten your freespace stuff. :)
FYI: It'll be back up by late tonight, have to use it for school today.

Ya know, right when you finish explaining the rules to people they have to go make total asshats of themselves.
You can thank the IP address
66.93.*.*
For your transfers of 2K a sec.  I would have this guy blocked in my router, but my router is a Netgear POS and doesn't allow me to block specific addresses (just web sites with certain criteria in the name, and ports).
I will be bringing the FTP down to manually add this guy to my block listing that hopefully is in my ADSL modem, if not then I'll find a work-around in Windows 2000 (the OS for the laptop that runs the FTP server)
Seriously, when this guy LITERALLY spams 10-15 connections in ONE FRICKEN SECOND, it really slows dowm my already lagged network.
You have him to thank for screwing the FTP server, cuz now I have a log file that is BIGGER THEN 10 MEG! Yea, it's not all that much but it really is a pain in the arse when these connection spams keep comming in so darn fast I can hardley upload anything to any of you guys.
So untill I learn how to block IP's either through my router or the Win 2000 OS, the FTP will be offline.
And you have
66.93.*.*
To thank for it.

Be sure to send him a warm greating of your heart-felt apprication.

[EDIT] Oh yea, forgot to add that this has been going on for about 2 days now.

This e-mail was just sent becuase I'm tired of this BS. Though I did pull the last 2 octets out of his/her IP address in the last post becuase I'm not that much of an AsShaT.

Speakeasy,

Please inform the user under the IP address 66.93.*.* (as of September, 02, 2004 at 6:00PM Central time) that his is spamming connections on my FTP and will not be tolerated anymore. This IP address has been added to my permanent banned listing, and will NOT be allowed access ever again. Unfortunately, I can not contact this user to notify him of this spamming session that has lasted more then 8 hours now. I have a small ADSL line, and the constant spamming of 10-15 connection retries every SECOND is getting out of hand.
I do not wish to impose any legal ramifications, however this must stop!
I thank you for your prompt actions in this matter.

Sincerely,

Molish
[email protected]

FTP site that is receiving the spam is: freespace.homeftp.net
[NOTE] The FTP has been shutdown untill this problem has been resolved. Thank you again for your prompt resolution of this.

I can't seem to be able to log into the FTP's to download... and when I do its a mere 5-6kb a second or so. Ick.

It wouldnt be so bad, but when I play the game the text messages flash away before I can even read the first two words. Any way to change this? I'm wanting to at the very least get the voice packs for missions, cause as it is, I feel less immersed than the demo.

Got to the 3.6 thread in the Source code project forum and download the launcher from that. Choose the FS2.exe as your executable rather than and FS2_Open one.

Hopefully that will allow you to set everything up.

You might want to look into downloading FS2_Open while you're there :D

Am I crazy but importing those registry keys does not work for me on two different XP machines. I tried both with and without the line of "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" at the top. I also tried importing directly from the registry editor.

I guess the next thing is to create them manually. Oh well, as I am getting the full set of Freespace 2 CDs, hopefully I can go around this strange problem.

Depends on what you're doing. If you're getting the iso's you'll need to either burn them to CDs or get a program called Dameon-tools to run them.

If you're downloading the VP files then my advice is to download them all and rename your data folder to data-old. There are a lot of placeholder files in there that will prevent the vp files from working correctly even when you do install them.

I keep trying to get it from both the FTPs but it won't work... one FTP the browser "can't find", and the other it gives me a "421 error" saying there are too many people connected... what's going on? I'm using Mozilla Firefox btw...

I then tried EDonkey clicking on the "get all files here" link (weighed about 700+ megabytes) but it didn't do anything.

Whew sorry about that!

There's some other stuff too but it seems to be just mods and such...

So please someone tell me exactly what files I need to d/l and what I need to do with them (and what programs I might need, how to use them, etc.. etc...)

Btw is the "silentthreat" iso file the full expansion to Freespace 1? Is it legal for me to d/l that as well (I own FS1 dvd but never found ST or FS2)

Thanks in advance.

See that 4th paragraph of VP files. Grab them.

You don't need all of them to play FS2 but if you want to play mods you'll be limiting yourself unless you get them all. If you only want to play FS2 or what to know what order to download them in take a look at this excerpt from my HotU FS2 FAQ.

Quote
WHAT IS ACTUALLY MISSING IN THE HOTU DOWNLOAD?.

As far as I can tell these are the files you are missing in the HotU version. I've included the unpacked size so you can see how big a task it would be to have them all hosted on Underdogs.

sparky_hi_fs2.vp   Contains the Hi -Res info for FS2.

You'll want the others most likely but since those are the ones that are actually missing at the moment you'll probably want them first.

As far as I know it's the full expansion. It's not quite legal to have it but since ST is about 6-7 years old by now I doubt anyone would care about you downloading it.

Ok I got the first 2 ISOs but the 3rd is corrupt and the guy at Game Warden's gone to bed (I think)... does anyone have anywhere else I can d/l it from? (just the 3rd cd)?

Wow, everyone and their friend's friends are on the FTP.  I did manage to get sparky_fs2.vp, root_fs2.vp and half of the stu_fs2.vp last night.  However, no luck at all today.

I wish I had found out about fs/fs2 sooner.  With only the HOTU version of fs2, I already like it more than the wing commander and Xwing games.  :)

I had several errors from the HOTU version last night.  I finished the mission where the Colossus destroys that huge Shivan ship, and when I went to the next mission it gave me several popups saying it was missing different files and crashed to the desktop.  Fortunately, sparky_fs2.vp seems to have fixed the problem (thanks for hosting the files btw).

Do the people at Game Warden's have .vp files, or just the .iso files?  Or are any other people hosting the .vp files?  Only a few people on edonkey had them and the ftp is pretty crowded.

I have the VP files, and will soon have 10GB of space to host them, though as of know I will only IM them over clients.

GW has the ISO and VP files.

You can get the v1.2 version of Root_FS2.vp from me though. (You'll have the 1.0 version with HotU).

Click me (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/Downloads/root_fs2.rar)

Thanks!  I'll sign up for a download slot on GW, but if you are ready first i'll get them from you. :)

I've been trying for awhile now to get on this darn FTP server and it's always full. I'm just trying to get sparky_hi_fs2.vp
Anyone know an alternative FTP I could grab it from?

Hey Riptide, there's currently only this FTP server set up. If you can't get on, grab it through eMule/ED2k.

Cheers!

Hey Sharp,

Speech files are all located in stu.vp.

okay so i love this game, i got it for my birthday many years ago... but when I went to play it recently, my cds were so bady scratched that it screwed my afterburner, and you know how much that's needed in this game. The game othe than that is great. What should i do? Install the cd versiona and the missing files from the internet? Install hotu version and suck the missing vp files from the cds? if so which ones do i need?

It's not the discs for that problem, have you installed XP recently?

Did they ever fix this problem in FS2_Open? I think they did but I don't want to send him off to download it if they didn't.

Well at least not as a solution to this problem :)

no, i've had my computer for almost a year now, and haven't had any chokeups, crashes, or anything. I must have micrrosoft's master/not to be released bugfree version! lol So what you're saying is that it's not the cds? that's a relief, I have already dowloaded hotu version, but not installed it. IS there a fix for this?

okay, so i googled around and fixed my afterburner problem, but thanks anyway! i will have to download SCP cause, i mean, come on my radeon 9800 pro needs more to do with it's time that render games from '99. lol hl2 runs great, and now that fs2 works (but the text is screwey) i'll have a lot less free time.

Nope. Not really tons of trouble. It just simply didn't work for most people using anything above 4.4 catalysts :D

If you're used to FS2 retail you'll never notice that they're gone until you look at screenshots that include them :)

Hey, I've had a serious problem connecting to the FTP's, I suspect it's my schools firewall. They block almost all spare ports, Bit Torrent doesn't work, online games don't work, it's pretty bad. I really want to get sparky_hi_fs2.vp especially, and stu_fs2.vp too but I can't find any other place. Is there a hosted DL anywhere I can get them? Thanks.

Game Warden had them but there's no way MatthewPapa will be giving them out this month after the bandwidth problem he just had.

Ok, question here...

I downloaded all the vps from the FTP site (thanks again!) and deleted the files in the data subdirectories as noted in the readme, but now the game wont' start.

I've seen mention of fixing the registry, but I didn't see any reg files on the FTP, and no mention of them in the readmes or on the Oracle FAQ. What is it I need to do to the registry to make it so the game will run?

I've actually never set up the FS2 registry on this computer, and I run retail.  My install consisted of directly ripping the Freespace2 directory across the network.  So I don't know that what I'm about to tell you makes any sense, but it's worth a try.

Short answer, go to the Wiki and look up the SCP.  You'll need it to play multi now, or if you want to give single player a go you'll find that it enhances the game drastically.  And the best part, it comes with its own launcher, which sets up the registry properly for you.  FS2 Retail need never have worked, and *presto* you've got a playable copy of Freespace 2.

Of course, if it's crashing because it's missing something, then that may not fix it.  But it will help narrow down the options.

Source Code Project, alternatively FSO (FS Open).  It's the open-source version of freespace.  I point you to the wiki because it explains the whole deal pretty well, and it has a good set of instructions to get you started.

Added the ed2k links to the ISO's for those who want them.

Hi

Do I need to get sparky_fs for the HOTU version or just sparkyhi_fs?

I thought I had everything I needed but the game wouldn't run, so i tried going through step by step again and discovered that it was when I deleted the files in the data folder that related to sparky_fs that the problem occurred.

However, this file is not in the SCP list of those which are not included in  the HOTU version so I had assumed I would only need sparkyhi_fs.

Also, is it actually possible to patch the HOTU version up to 2.1?  I tried, (immediately after installing the HOTU version), but got the error that the 'old file was not found.  A file of the same name was found but as the contents did not match the patch could not complete' or words to that effect.

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.  Cheers.

EDIT:  It's okay - I've found the answer to my first question in another thread along with a couple of other answers:

1. yes, I do need to get sparky_fs2 as well.

2. yes, it would have been a good idea to browse the other threads first!

3. yes, this probably wasn't the right place for this post!

Apologies!

Hey NP Brulleks, glad you got it figured out.

Cheers!

And :welcome:

On another note, since I linked to the ISO images i've seen the number of sources skyrocket from 16 to 73 for each file as of today.

Definitely shows how popular this still is, and the potential.

Cheers!

Hi Fractux,

I've downloaded your cd1.iso and cd2.iso files, since i can't get the Hotu version + Vp files etc. i've downloaded to get to work in 1024x768 mode. I thought i'd try my luck with the .iso files. Only now i discovered during installation that there should be a cd3. Unfortunately, your post contains 2 similar links to cd2, and none to cd3. Could you please post a link to a cd3.iso file? I would be very grateful.  Thanks! PeeBee

Can't help you with the link but if you choose to not install the Act 2 or Act 3 Command Briefings you might be able to play the first 9 missions without it asking for CD3.

That should hold you over until you can get hold of it. When you do you can then copy the Tango2 and Tango3 vp files across to your HD.

So here's (http://prototype24.ath.cx:6969/index.html?filter=Games) a torrent for the whole game instead ;)

Im realy having a lot of trouble with this. I have tried connecting multiple times but I can never get through. Im a total noob, I just downloaded FTP Voyager to get these files. I saw the first post had a status moniter but all I get is the little IE "red X" where the picture should be. Thanks for the help if you can.

I keep getting this over and over again.
STATUS:>   Connecting to "gaming.smoothkruger.ca" on port 21.
ERROR:>   Connection closed by the server.
ERROR:>   Unable to login

Does this just mean the server is full?

Edit: Well I got connected to the server but now every time I try to download anything I get:

STATUS:>   Connecting to "gaming.smoothkruger.ca" on port 5959.
ERROR:>   Connection closed by the server.
ERROR:>   Unable to login

Wow why is this so friggin hard??

Well, I've given up on the HotU of this game. What a goddamn hassle and waste of time. Honestly, its great that you set up that FTP but damn it was literaly impossible for me to get any files- it was THAT busy.:doubt:
Ah well thanks anyway. Ive started a torrent of the full ISO's
( btw the one posted by Karajorma doesnt work for some reason, try here: http://www.torrentspy.com/search.asp?mode=torrentdetails&id=133074 )

You want to know the saddest part? I had both games in mint condition with all the original **** but about a 2 years ago I came home to find almost all my electronics robbed and the rest of my house vandalized. I cant realy remember why I didn't pick up replacements... Its damn ****ty world we live, I tell ya....

Anyway I'll try to grab it from your link and seed it myself :)

Yea, the button to start the torrent was just grayed out, which is really odd because it shows that there are other people DLing and seeding the file....

Anyway, I was just wondering, I dont use bittorrent that often - what are the chances my 2gig download will be corrupt?
Title: playing mods
Post by: PeeBee on April 03, 2005, 06:06:17 am
Hi Karajorma, (or anyone else who has the answers to my q's)

It has been a few weeks since my last... ehrm... post! Just post. Nothing to confess really, apart from having played fs2_open like a madman the last couple o' weeks. My 6 year old son keeps begging me to play it every day and of course I let him; we make a great team, flying 1 ship with 4 hands!

I have 2 little questions:

1 I would like to view the cutscenes ingame. I've already downloaded the .avi's. In the Oracle I read I have to (among other things) update my campaignfile. Unfortunately the provided link

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/Downloads/FS2_Open-WithMovies.zip

is dead. Could you point me to a valid 1?
(I also noticed that currently there is no file in the missions folder, except 2 'backup' files.)

2 If I want to choose a mod in the Launcher I get the message 'Mod directory name can't contain space'. It hasn't! Honestly! I'm using fs2_open_3_6_5 and Random Tiger's Launcher5 (Oddly designated version 4.0.0.0) and have placed a folder named 'bwo' (for playing Blackwater Ops, obviously) containing the proper data, in my main fs2 folder. Of course I can replace the data folder every time I want to play it, but maybe you know a solution. I've searched on the forums but  'twas in vain...

Greetings

What's your main FS dir?
You might want to try a newer FSO build, unfortunately, I can't point you to the SCP forum right now because, well, it's gone for a few days. We're using some other forum in the meantime. http://scp.indiegames.us/news.php is where you can find a lot of resources, plus a temporary forum.

That's my bad. The file became obsolete quite a while ago so I removed it. If you have anything newer than 3.6.5 then you should be able to play the cutscenes simply by sticking them in the main Freespace folder.

3.6.5 unfortunately has a bug which prevents it from playing movies but this (http://scp.indiegames.us/download.php?view.67) build of Taylors which I regard as a bug-fixed 3.6.5 will play the movies for you.

I've heard this one several times but I can never remember the cause. Does the folder you installed FS2 to contain any spaces? for instance "c:\program files"

Post by: PeeBee on April 03, 2005, 10:52:20 am
Thnx 4 those Karajorma, I will try instantly. Yes, my games-drive is called Program Files. Renaming it would result in lots of programs not knowing where to get their files, I guess... but I'll try.

I'll get back to you as soon as it's clear whether the suggests work.
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: karajorma on April 03, 2005, 11:52:25 am
I'd suggest reinstalling FS2 to a folder with no spaces in the path rather than simply renaming the path (which as you say would cause a lot of problems).
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: PeeBee on April 03, 2005, 12:00:25 pm
Yep! You are very right...

Edit:  I've installed fs2 and the _open version you pointed out on a 'non-spaced' disk and likewise folder and hey, presto! I can play mods the way it's meant to be. Great!

Only strange thing left is, I can now view the Intro and Colossus cutscenes from within the techroom, but not Bosch's 1st monologue. I can hear him plauder along when I press 'play' but all I see is the same available-cutscenes-listing (I only got this far after starting over a few times) So I don't know whether I will be able to see the other movies..... however this is far less important than the mod issue.

So Karajorma, let's consider this case closed (unless you have any more suggestions). When I've finished the main campaign, I'll probably try to do some online playing and most probably be put to some new puzzles. I look forward to it.

Thanks again!

I got a little problem. I downloaded Sparky.vp from the FTP server and it was corrupt. And I think I need a Root_fs2.vp updated, cos the link on Freespace oracle was broken. Opps. I didn't notice the broken link! Thanks for the heads up.

Go to my Downloads page (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/downloads.html) and get the crack pack from there.

Sparky_fs2.vp on the FTP is fine you must have just gotten a bad download. Try again.

One other thing to double check: Have you enabled passive FTP in the clients?

I can connect in filezilla but this is what I get:

Command:   LIST
Error:   Transfer channel can't be opened. Reason: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.
Error:   Could not retrieve directory listing

I know my uni tends to block a lot of stuff as far as hosting servers and people trying to connect in, but I've never been blocked connecting out....

Does anyone know how I might resolve this?
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: coldpenguin on June 18, 2005, 09:06:33 pm
its cool I got the files off of emule yesterday. Anyway now I am trying to get the movies working. I am using FS Open version 3.6.5, and it says

Unrecognized command lime parameter -dshowvid, continue?

And I cannot see the intro in the game. And I have divx instaleld and can see movie in a normal media player. I have the intro.avi in my main  FS2 directory. I also have the latest mv_core.vp in the directory.
I am trying to view the intro in game from tech room. If its only like a tech room issue I guess I won't be able to see intro in the game but will see the other cutscenes pop up in game at appropriate places??

I am tempted to download an avi to -> mve converter and reverse convert them back to their original format so I wont even have to use FS Open. This would presumably result in lower quality video but whatever.

Post by: coldpenguin on June 18, 2005, 09:33:41 pm
I used this program http://return0.pisem.net/avi2mve.html
to convert the intro.avi to intro.mve, and I still cant play the movie with or without FS Open. When I tried to play it in normal FS2, it said could nto find movie please insert CD#2. Just wondering, I am using the HotU version has a bse then have upgraded the files and whatnot. Perhaps I am missing a registry key for the directory of CD drive that I could set to C:\Games\FS2 instead of D:\ or whatnot to look for movie on ahrd drive.

Anyway if someone could help me get the AVI working in FS Open that would work too I guess

That's very odd. The crack pack contains the 1.2 version of the no-cd crack. There's no way that it should be giving you that error once you've replaced the original exes with the ones in the rar.

I'll take a look at the download.

Hello everyone,

Like my friend Swag_w a few posts up, I'm getting the same problem with my FTP.  Does this mean the slots are full or is there another problem?  In the meantime I'm using eMule to get some of the files, even though I feel I'd get them faster with the FTP.  Either way, any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Update: Well I'm getting my files so far from eMule, but I got another problem:

Single-player works fine, but when I try to host a multiplayer LAN game, or any multiplayer game in that matter, it says, "You need 1 CD for every 4 players!"  Is there a no-cd crack that will take care of this?  Keep in mind I'm only running so far on the basic files (that you download from HotU), with the properly installed sparky_fs2.vp and sparky_hi_fs2.vp files, including using the HotUv1.2Pack.  Anything I'm missing?  Do I need the other VP files to be able to get passed this problem?

Sorry about that. Missed this post (mainly cause you edited rather than posting again) and everyone else probably waited for me to respond seeing as the problem is with my crack pack.

Quite frankly I've not tried using the exe from the crack pack to play multiplayer so I've got no idea why it's not working. You could try using FS2_Open (From the Source Code Project forum) or if it doesn't work for you you could also try this exe (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,27037.0.html).

If you want to play multi my FAQ online (or even on a LAN) my FAQ has an explaination in case you get stuck.

I might be talked into a release on Usenet.

Hi

I'm a big fan of Freespace. I played Freespace 1 and I have Freespace 2 Colossus (but it's only a couple of missions:().
I just downloaded freespace 2 from hotu and tried to connect to this ftp serwer but couldn't because there were to many users.
I would like to know is there a torrent to this? I see that there are files on edonkey but I don't use it (bad memories). If anybody could post an alternative like where to find a torrent or another ftp serwer or something I would be glad.

Thanks and bye

P.S. Sorry for my bad English. I'm not native to it and make the most stupid mistakes.

If you want torrents click on my FAQ link below and check out the general questions page. I've got three different torrents linked to there so one of them should work.

Seeing as there are other ways to get the FS2 data now, that are much quicker than the FTP, I was considering closing down the FTP server I'm currently hosting.

I will leave it for a few days before doing so. Then I can allocate the bandwidth elsewhere.

Cheers!

Heh.  None did - a number of faults.  So I've set up my own.  Assuming I've done it right, you should be able to grab a torrent file at http://www.ozzard.org/FreeSpace2/all_fs2_vp_files.zip.torrent that references an Azureus-based tracker at http://tracker.ozzard.org:6969 (from which you can get the torrent if I've messed up the file on the Web site).

Note that the whole lot's hosted at the wrong end of my domestic ADSL, so my apologies for the slow downloads that will undoubtedly be experienced by the first few victims... uh... downloaders.  If you do download from it, please be kind to my bandwidth and keep sharing the file, even if you limit your own upload speed - thanks.

They all appear to have the full, 2.2Gbyte, 3-CD goodness of the retail game, whereas I appear to have the only torrent of the mere 700 Mbytes or so of vps to get the game ex-cinematics.

We've needed one of those for a while though :)

It's all well and good putting up a torrent of the full game but with HotU you can download FS2 and play it now while waiting for the rest to download. I'm sure that 56kers appreciate being able to do that :)

You actually have several choices (When I wrote my HotU FAQ this was the only one).

1) Get the VP files from the FTP linked to on the first page. The FTP is busy but it has all the files you need to turn HotU into a full version. You'll need an FTP client as whatever web browser you use probably won't be up to the task.)
2) Get the files using the EDonkey network using the links on the first page. (You'll need an eDonkey client already installed like EMule)
3) Get the torrent Ozzard about 4-5 posts above this one and download the VP files using a BitTorrent client if you have one.

If I've confused you by going on about clients then those three probably aren't the best methods for you. Instead do one of these.

4) Ditch HotU completely and download all 3 FS2 CDs from Swooh (http://www.swooh.com/home/lorenzo/iso/)
5) Ditch HotU completely and download a 1 CD version which doesn't have the cutscenes unless you use FS2_Open from this thread (http://207.38.10.121/~freespace/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=728348#post728348)

I downloaded all 3 iso from Swooh. But now how do I install the game?

C:\WINDOWS\system32\autoexec.nt
When I load it up in alcohol, it says the system file is not suitable for running msdos and microsoft windows applications, choose close to terminate the application.

I tried to find the file listed, but it's appearantly not on my computer. :eek2:

First, it's a system file so search probably won't turn it up unless you speciffically tell it to search hidden and system files.

Secondly, this is a known problem with a lot of Windows installs.  Google that file and see if you can't find a copy of it online somewhere to replace the one that you may or may not have on your machine.

Sounds like you've got a dodgy 3rd CD. Redownload it. If that doesn't work what you should do is download MatthewPapa's 1 CD version from this (http://207.38.10.121/~freespace/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34806)  thread.

OK
first off, you guys rock, i've been looking for FS2 for like 3 years now, because the first one owned me. Secondly, these forums have been invaluable to me for getting the game, so kudos

BUT, i've been trying to download the emule vp files for some time now, and i have about 701 megs out of 730, and for one reason or another, it decided to not work anymore because of a firewall, it says i have a low id, any help would be greatly appreciated, i'm soo close!
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: karajorma on October 01, 2005, 06:52:09 pm
Low ID is a temporary Emule problem unless something has changed on your network recently. Simply connect to a different server and it should go away.

Even if it doesn't Low ID just means that it will take a little longer to get the file once you can connect.

Right on!
i got it to work and now have the working version with the vp's and all, awesome game!

But another question:
Is there anywhere out there where i can pick up the briefing voices and other misc voice and sound files so that i don't have to listen to microsoft SAM while playing??
Title: Freespace 2 FTP server
Post by: karajorma on October 02, 2005, 03:21:39 am
They weren't in the VP pack?

IF you're playing a mod campaign you're out of luck but the VP files you're downloading should have all the voices in there for the main campaign. Check your FS2 folder and see if you've got a file called stu_fs2.vp.

If it does then the problem is most likely that you forgot to do the thing with the data folder.

Quote
From my FAQ
Simply downloading a VP file and putting it in your freespace2 folder isn't enough to make the files work though. The HotU version contained a series of dummy files to replace the files that weren't included. The problem is that these dummy files have a higher priority than the ones in the VP file so they get used instead.
The easiest thing to do is to download all the VP files first. You then put them in the Freespace2 folder (overwrite or remove the versions already present). Then clean out all the subfolders in Freespace2\Data\ with the exception of Fredocs and Players. You can remove the TangoA and TangoB folders at this point too.

Starting in November, I'm going to be hosting the FTP server again, and this time I will have a bit more bandwidth to allocate.

WIth the availablity of the full game downloads, I've seen a drop in the downloadning  of the edonkey files, so I will reallocate some of that bandwidth to the FTP server.

Just giving people a heads up.

I'll look into a mirror for the FS1 cutscenes we still have. Would you mind seeding a torrent with the FS2 cutscenes you made so that I can get them from you? I'm planning to use them in a SCP repack CD. :) (Disclaimer: Repack not intended for release unless and until I feel my work is high enough quality to request permission from the SCP team.)

I took down the ED2k links to the vp files, since they are not in demand at all anymore.

There's always activity on the FTP server every day, hence my reasons for removing them. Besides, with the increased bandwidth, you can grab files  a lot faster now on the FTP server.

Hey Fractux, would you be interested in getting the content on your server available through BitTorrent or something? :)

This is what I was thinking of doing in December. I was going to repackage all of the individual vp files. Because people seem to prefer to grab the files directly from the FTP, I've limited the FTP content to the VP files, as some people would spend two days grabbing all the files / movies / mods I used to have on the FTP server.

Getting the bittorrents ready is at the end of a long list of things to do, and I will get to that eventually, if no one else does first.

Cheers!

I get the error message that the FTP server does not exist.  Is the server down?  Is there another place I can get the vp files to make the HotU Freespace 2 version equivalent to the retail version?  Please advise!

I've been looking for a copy of this game for 2 years now, and I saw one at Fry's Electronics in Burbank, CA.  Stupid me - I didn't buy it because I figured it was going to stay around for a while longer.  Apparently I was wrong.  I am asking for the most reliable site (FTP or other) to get Freespace 2.  The full retail version is preferred.  (I tried all the links to all the sites in several forums and nothing has the vp files I need.)

Help!!!

The other FTP on this board has the entire game as does www.freespacezone.com. If you only want the VP files (for instance if you only intend to play FS2_Open and therfore don't need the retail cutscenes) I think you're stuck with eDonkey/eMule if the server is down.
