not done yet, but figured it's good enough to anounce I'm working out of it.
-
*explodes*
Sweet Jesus that looks good.
-
mmmm... high poly Orion:D
-
if it were biologically possible, I'de ask you to have my baby
the only thing I dear about this is that the coolness will get lost or diluted in the textures.
-
Oh my! :faints:
*awakens to cry as his fps falls below acceptable limits*
Are you going to custom uv or just use the tiles?
BTW, see if you can get what'shisname to give you the turrets off the upgunned version that hanging around, they look good enough to use without much modification.
-
It was Raptor who made the improved turrets. He made a standard version and an up-gunned version.
Well Bob... the Hercules, the Deimos, and now the Orion. You've certainly got a name for yourself in Hi-Polyizing Cannon FS ships, though IIRC, the Herc and Deimos haven't been fully LODed or in the case of the Deimos... debris'ed yet.
-
Lost sight of bottom jaw. Is there going to be much of a size difference between this and the origional?
-
why would I change the size? :wtf:
I'm not done yet, it lacks suficent detail in the rear behind the fighter bay, on the top in the back, and the front of it could use one more layer of greebleing. I'm probly going to add destroyable duct work similar to the engines I did on the Deimos.
if someone has some turrets I'll use them, but I have some ideas on what to do.
I'm going to use origonal textures, might make some modifications of them for some sections (you all remember that paralax test I did with the arcadia textures?) I intend to be able to use the origonal models for LOD and stuff
-
The definitive Terran ship (IMO) gets the treatment it deserves.
*insert cheering here*
-
Maybee its just my wierd thinking in my dreams again but i always thought that the Orion design could be trasnposed into a larger more powerfull ship. Like the old fenris that i tryed to increase but i just couldn't do it any justice (trying again btw).
-
very cool
estimated polycount ?
-
2~3,000
-
*Goes into Conniptions*
Now that is a flagship.
-
It's not a flat box anymore. :D
Excellent work Bob.
-
The smoothnes of the rear of the Orions fighterbay doesn't look right for the ship.....
-
Such detail!!! You're like a God with a mean paint brush... Such detail!!! You're like a god with a mean paint brush...
-
I never liked the Orion. This doesn;'t change that, but it does look better.
-
The greatest Freespace capital ship gets a new coat of paint...great job :D
-
Well that's pretty goddamn impressive.
-

hmm....::hopping: :hopping: synchronized hopping :p
anywayz, that does look truly awesome... if you can get hte texturing to match that quality, then freespace will then truly be among the league of the awesomest gamez in the history of the universe. even tho FS nad FS2 ARE the greatest games int he history of the universe...
BTW, i made a 'V-TURRET-IMPROVED' type thing that im using on the Parthenon (a ship, not the parthenon itself :p) and i can post up a piccy if you want... all it is relaly is longer barrels, an indentation on the base, and a better texture job. and the barrels have an inside (kinda) and a little 'steep' bit in the middle. want any pics?
[edit] and i would usggest you put more 'antennae' on hte front of it, you know where i mean, i think. it woul just look better, methinks.
-
Pst....Grim...there's an "s" key on your keyboard :p :D Use it instead of z ;)
Anyway, great work Bob! :D
-
Additional suggestions:
1 - I know you said that you wanted to use the pre-existing textures, but considering the high number of textures on the original, are you gonna do any Baking to reduce HTL performance drag? That said, retaining original texture layout does make texture swapping for mods an easier thing. Perhaps 2 models, one texture reduced, the other with original layout.
2 - Include a timed glowpoint pattern on the landing ramp as seen in the FS1 CB animations. It would be less resource-intensive than animated glowmap.
-
As Trashman said, that round thing behind the hangar doesn't look right. Make it octagonal and round each edge, that'd look better. As for the textures, I'd remake the main Orion tile with less obvious spaces between the plates, and for the landing bay you could ad a row of glowpoints like on a runway.
-
Round thing behind the hangar realy doesn't look right.
-
ya... i agree with lynx and i think times lights running down the runway would not only be less sytem-intensive but would also look cooler. :)
-
Now there is an Orion mod that actually looks better than the original. About time someone gave that ship the treatment it deserves
And the rounded part is fine. Helps offset some of the extreme sharpness of some of the ship's angles.
-
pretty nice, I like expecially the rounded nose
-
Going along with the trend, I think you ought to square off the bump on the rear starboard side, behind the fighter bay. Make it octagonal like the original. There's a big difference between the port and starboard sides that needs to be reconciled.
Also, the sensor booms, antenna and miscellaneous comm arrays underneath the launch ramp need some definite enhancement. It ought to be a dense cluster of antennae.
That said, it looks fantastic. Great joerb! And remember to leave room for the nameplate.
-

anyway, im starting to like the rounded corner... gives it a good contrast. then again, it would look more faithful to hte original orion if it was octagonal... GAH! im torn!
-
Suggestion for an even more custom version:
You could add an observation post above the launch pad - indentation for windows, maybe a small subobject with reflective windows, so it looks like a big office/launch control staff is there.
Similarly 2 bridges could be place on the top of the ship (above the engines) and another one at the corner of the ship near the lower antennas, so it also has a left-side view.
These would be the tactical CIC observation bridges, while the mainbridge is inside the main "arm" of the ship under several layers of protective armor.
The tip of the said arm could also recieve smg. but smaller than the rest, as a sort of docking/collision lookout post for manuvers when it is necessary to see everything that's inside the deadzone in front of the ship.
IMHO you may also consider returrenting the whole ship in a more sensible manner.
Summary on your progress: AWSOME, YAWBREAKING, HELLUVA GOOD STUFF!!!
-
When this comes out, all orions in my campaign will be replaced with it. 'Nuf said.
-
When this comes out all Orions in every campaign will be replaced with it!:D
-
not to mention orions that arent in campaigns :)
and i agree with the control-tower in the side thing. i IMO, i dont think that any others would be a good idea (creative, though) but i like the control tower.
-
very awesome. Starting to look its size and utter l33tness.
-
someone point me to a link to the hi-poly deimos
-
i dont think its done yet...
-
It's done.
-
I feels odd in the first place, as the Orion has always been that flat "space brick". Good job, anyway. Though I'm not sure the front part of the lower hull opposite to the hangar isn't a bit too detailed. I can't put it into better words, that specific part just feels odd.
Goulmeister : here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,25015.0.html) is the Deimos.
-
thanks for the link
-
*oooh's and aaah's*
-
while im at it is there any other good hi-poly models i should get?
-
everyone with concerns about the rounded thing behind the fighterbay, relax, I told you that needed the most amount of work of any part on the ship, I plan on adding two or three additional layers of greebles to that place yet, I'm going to try and transition from the rounded bits to the blocky bits, if it doesn't work out, I'll just tare it out and go super angular.
the blocky stuff under the front of the launch ramp will have all sorts of little bits added, what's there is just the meaty bits.
I'm not uv mapping this beast.
-
i dotn touch lithunwrap with a 300-poly ship, let alone a few thousand one :)
-

many but what is released should already be in some media vp which comes with scp..
-
Deimos isn't. Perseus isn't
-
I did a little bit of work on it tonight, now, doen't that back end look a lot better?
-
All hail Bob. Now thats what i call the true essance of the Orion.
-
*Jaw drops through floor, ground, earth's core and hits some guy in China*
-
Bobboau is God.
*worships*
-
Hooray for Bobboau and his Amazing Technicolour Dream Orion!
-
I've drawn Orions, I've made Orions out of beans, I've doodled Orions on an "Etch-a-sketch" or whatever it may be called, I've flown Orions, I've raced around Orions, I've defended Orions, I've attacked Orions, I've made an Orion out of ceramic, which I am holding this very moment... and I must say that that rear right portion must not be round!
But more importantly, awesome job!
Like... awesome.
Another idea: You could make yet another varient, with like... 30 turrets or something. Ya know, so it'll be up to date with FS2 era ships... just because... i dunno... yeah. Have a nice day.
-
I like! Good job, keep it up!

Reaffirms the confidence I had in you to make that round thing work out beautifully. Awesome work Bobboau :yes2::nod::yes:
-
show us
-
righto, starting hecate thread now :)
BTW, can somebody point me to the diemos? the actual d/l link, i couldnt find it at the other one.
-
I can't post the actual link, since Bob put it up as an attachment, but I can link you to the thread in which it was released. Here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,25015.0.html).
Later!
-
oh, yeah, this thing, eh, I got it in game viewable (textured, made some subobjects)
still needs quite a bit of work, but it's starting to come together.
-
make this thing happen... and add a second fighter bay on the other side, makes it more modernized....
-
It's not supposed to be modernized, it's supposed to be asthetically upgarded. *trouts deep_eyes*
-
*Agrees with Deep_Eyes that a dual-ramp version could be useful for some campaigners, but also agrees with Raa that this should be a drop-in HTL replacement for the existing Orion before anything else*
-
what the hell's a greeble ?
-
All of that little bumpy stuff is considered greebling. It's small, functionless (and often generic) detail used to make a CG object seem more realistic and/or larger.

:eek2:
wow.
I want one.
-
get rid of those arcadia and aeolis textures.
and show the other side
-
I'm kinda a fan of making the turrets have the red/black stripes like the Colossus' turrets.
-
I've seen them up close they have that
-
Well, aside from one triangle directly below the begining of the fighter bay, it looks pretty good. There should be something you could replace that arcadia and aeolus maps with though, they stand out a bit now that bob made it appearent... :doubt:
-
Is it just me, or does the Orion look...Bigger than before?
-
Ew, I'm sorry, but those textures completley hide all the details Bob put in :(
-

Different textures would stop it looking like an Orion. Besides I'll judge this on how it looks in game once the lighting is affecting it rather than on a flat picture.
-
Wow....looks great, especially from the middle to the bow. The rear section looks a bit cluttered....but overall
-

****ing showoff. :p
Really though, the textures do seem to hide the detials. Why not give the old orion parts the orion look, then make the new stuff look like newer GTVA materials, like the Deimos. So it looks like a refit? I'd like to use that... :nervous:
-
What I'm planning to do is UV unwrap this entire thing then hand it over to a serious texture artist to work on. If anyone's up for it, let me know.
-
the file I posted was textured BTW, if anyone wants to look at it in game them selves, it won't exactly the same but it looks fairly similar, and some of the coolest parts are on the other side of it.
-
Zee ownage. 'Nuff said. I can still make out most of the added detail, myself.
-

I think you missed a bit on that one though. One of the turrets showed up red in modelview.

Words fail me. Bob, you are hereby deified in the eyes of everyone here.....
-
looked at the modle. looks really good! problem being: the textures are somewhat 'cut up', and theres just stops in the middle of armor plates.
(you know, in real life, having armor plates like taht would be kinda dumb, wouldnt it? wed want to have a pure, thick slab of flying armor :p )

 Was I supposed to write something? ;7
-
Damn, I need a second partition for Windows to run with those old catalyst drivers.
-
OMG OMG OMG!!111
That is...beauuutiful...
-
I spent some time on the maps, but I cannot improve the ship like Bobboau did.
Great work
(Please click on the picture, it's huge, but all the detail gets lost if not displayed at full size.)

"we're not worthy"

I...want..it...NOW!!!!:eek2: *requests a panting smiley*
say, whatever happened to The Orion Project? (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,11629.0.html)
-
KT's probably already having carnal knowledge with it.
Oh my god...
-
wow, i'm amazed
you must've been bored while the site was down....
you know what, This is what I got my 6800GT for
-
There is a special place in heaven reserved for the both of you...
...as soon as this gets released.
-
you know what, i'm not just going to stand aside and look, I'm gonna have a crack at those textures!
-
woah
DaBrain, that picture makes an aweomse desktop and/or SCP promo image. Just get one with the backgroun in there and you're golden,
Very nice work, both of you.
-
Holy...
Any attempt at making a cooler ship for freespace has just been totally owned.
EDIT: Uhh, not to be the bearer of bad news, but she's missing a turret. The big multipart under her chin, to be specific. Well, actually there's a multipart on the back where there should be a standard button turret, and nothing under the nose. I'd wager a few of the turret locations are a bit off, aren't they.
-
meh, it was just to show it off in engine.
anyone feel free to do what ever they want with the model, I don't know when I'll get around to working on it again. and I haven't realy done anything sence I posted that file
-
Can you do the Arcadia next, huh can ya, can you Uncie Bob, can ya?
Since I assume that Terran ships are your forte, right?
-
First person that can make the Collosus actually look good gets my total and absolute respect. ;)
-
both of those are very doable
-
Oh, damn...
-
Dont forget to give me those textures when they're ready DaB
The only thing to improve is mapping the textures (particularily on the back) - the model itself is great, but as has been mentioned, the texture sections are somewhat cut off in areas.
-
Damn, OMFG !!!!! It's powerfull !! it's magnificient !!!!
Where can i download this new Orion Model ??
I want it !!! Can resist anymore...... Aaaaarrrrg, i'm falling into the Dark side.....
-
The link has already been posted. ;)
@Lightspeed The maps are amlost done. I've fixed some tile problems, but there is quite a number left.
Nothing too hard, but I'm short in time. So I'll add some details and send them over too you. Probably tomorrow.

On page three.
http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=557051
I doubt you'll have much fun with it. It has no subsystems and not a single working turret.
It lies in the space like a brick. :) (For now...) ;)
-
Damn...... When could we see a complete GTD Orion ? :D
-
The model is amazing, great work Bob. :) Although, I never much cared for the extreme contrast of the Orion's yellow and blue. Orion's textures never quite did it for me.. so my only suggestion would be to keep them as close as to the original as possible (so the masses are pleased) but make them look modern, futuristic, or just really cool (so that I am pleased). ;)
-
;7
niceness!
AWESOME niceness!
-
Well, I'd love to actually see a picture of it... :doubt:
-
Well, since the last post was made 4+ years ago, I suspect it has been deleted.
