Ok just taken a quick look at the stuff and I must say it looks realy nice. Maybe some tweaks with the lightning (specmaps etc) but overall very nice. I like the new explosion and impact-fx, new engine glows and other stuff.

Only thing that bothers me is that the bolds for EA ships could be stretched a little again...special the EA Omega class pulsecannon (the one that fires three shots) should have back its long bold.

For everything else...I just wait for some big campains from you guys and full functional Whitestars ^_^

So I don't have to have FS2 installed for this to work?  Cool!!:snipe:

The Mission 1 pack doesn't seem to work for the Fileplanet site. When I click to download, it lists the titles for "registered" and "unregistered/free servers", however no servers are listed under those heading (where as the other two files both have two, one for west and one for the east coast)

It'll work. It takes a while. I thought I had the same exact problem, but it just took a few minutes. Also, try clicking the next button when it reaches 100%. Even if the buttons still greyed out. Don't ask me why, just do it. ;)

Everything looks great.  I am having a slight problem where everyting just freezes for one second then goes back to normal.  I noticed when I lowerd the music it did not happen as freqently.  Is there a setting that I must adjust?  It happens every now and then and it never crashes.

It may take up to 24 hours for fileplanet mirrors to catch up. The downloaded number is apparently only how many times the link has been clicked.

WMCoolmon, you're an SCP dude aren't you, go fiddle with the launcher and see which setting causes that. ;)

PSI-KILLER, go to the launcher, features tab and try different "easy setup" presets first.

I don't understand what you are referring to. Do you mean "Demon Haunting" mission in the EMW campaign?

The Nials are targetable as soon as they appear, at least on my system.

Also, why do you have dummy VPs beyond sparky_hi_fs2.vp?

And finally...is it not possible to make an add-on version for FS2, if only for disk space and organization purposes? (It'd also save on DL time, since a lot of the original FS2 art is used.)

Just to make sure it works.

Nope, I don't feel like going through the trouble maintaining two different versions of the project. Too much trouble and too big of a chance that I will forget something from the other. Besides, eventually there should be no original FS2 files present anymore.  Hopefully one of our senior staff is working on replacing the rest of FS2 interface.

We've mostly tried to keep it down until Raider Wars is released. Old demo campaign and a mission pack isn't enough to start pimping on every possible forum.

Btw, I think some 700 people have now downloaded the base from fileplanet and bittorrent. I hope we can get the number up to one thousend when RW is out :D

Seriously? Well, as long as you can get the WS' beam cannon working. It isn't, well for me anyway. I'll be happy. Just make it player flyable in missions and not AI.

the previous whitestar, by den5 I think, had a working beam. This new one works for AI pilots, but not when I'm flying it...

The beam is a turret, you need to use beam-free sexp or set beams free from mission specs.

Doesn't Inferno have beam firing Shivan bombers, you couldn't just take a page out of whatever they're doing???

Unfortunaly SCP staff isn't very thrilled about it. Maybe it won't get done.

What do you mean they're not very thrilled about it? Too much work or something? Seems to me that it's a pretty important component, I'd think that most of the smaller Vorlons, Shadows and probably the Drazi (oh, and Drakh) would fit under the gunship form.
Title: TBP Base 3.0 and Earth-Minbari War released
Post by: Fury on January 11, 2005, 12:45:38 pm
It is not an issue with firing beams, we have already done that with Nials. The problem is that fs2_open does not support three primary weapons, it's as simple as that.

Messing with AI code is dirty, dangerous and a lot of work.

You never know what the SCP guys are gonna pull out of their hats.  I just saw something in screenshots from a bleeding edge build that challanges the longstanding answer to one of the most requested features, which was always "no way, Hose".  It was like carved in stone that this couldn't be done under FS, but there it was.   I won't say what it is, but if it isn't already being shown off in the SCP forums, it will be soon. ;7

Well, its not in the forum yet, so I'm gonna PM one of the team members to see if they plan on showing this off with any kind of fanfare.  When I saw this thing I remember shouting out loud "Well Son of a B*tch!"  The they may be keeping this thing out of the limelight to avoid it taking too much focus from work on the main builds... you remember how Env-mapping and Shadows (no, not the B5 ones) took the limelight, when SCP was supposed to be in bug-squishing mode?  In the case of the shadows, this has yet to be followed up on, so it tends to get alot of pestering by salivating board members who want to see it working.  This "something" may be another instance of this effect, where a new yet buggy feature takes more attention than the SCP guys would like.  Oh, well... time will tell.  Oh, and good catch with the "Jose" thing... I don't know what I was thinking.

Later!

Did you install the Earth-Minbari War campaign and the Mission Pack to the same folder as the actual game? You can check it by making sure that these files are in your main game folder (default C:\Program Files\The Babylon Project):

-B5-C-sp-EMW01-intelanims-1_0.vp
-B5-C-sp-EMW01-missions-2_0.vp
-B5-C-sp-EMW01-speech-1_0.vp
-B5-MP01-missions-1_0.vp
-B5-MP01-speech-1_0.vp

If not, reinstall the campaign and mission pack. If they are, you can start playing by going to Campaign and selecting Earth-Minbari War Demo (or something else when new stuff is released). Then just hit Continue from the main menu and start playing. Single mission can be found in Tech Data->Mission Simulator->Single Missions.

Hopefully that helps :)

Problemo...

The installation stops on this error "Extract: error writing to file B5-Core-2_0.vp" at 37%

Does it mean that the whole file is corrupted and I have to download it again?
Title: TBP Base 3.0 and Earth-Minbari War released
Post by: Fury on January 13, 2005, 07:21:05 am
The installer checks itself for possible crc errors, so it is unlikely that the installer is corrupted if the check passes.

Sounds like you either have run out of hard drive space or the installer no longer can access the folder you're trying to install to, or the file that is being written get locked.

And don't you mean B5-Core-3_0.vp? ;)

Try to disable anti-virus software if one is running. If that does not help, then try to install TBP elsewhere, if that does not help either, try to install EMW or MP1 and see if they produce the same error.

Okay, thanks :) I'll try that..

"And don't you mean B5-Core-3_0.vp? "

Yes, yes I do :D

EDIT: Getting closer.. Same error at 93%. I closed few applications including anti-virus programs...

I had that same problem with my installer, it's probably because (as the other guy said) you don't have enough hard drive space. You need like 550 to install it.

What's more annoying, is the apparent preference for windows to always use C drive for the temporary files. Why it moves files to one drive, and then back to another is beyond me.
I installed TBP to D drive which has about 25 gigabytes free, but I failed the installation twice because my much smaller C drive only had about 450 MB free at the time. Absolutely ridiculous.

Post by: Fury on January 13, 2005, 09:56:16 am
Your temp folder should be where you have the most free space. Windows uses variables to this.

If you've got W2k/XP, you can change it by going to Control panel > System > Advanced > environment variables.

From there you will find user and system variables, each having their own temp. Just create a new temp folder where you have the free space, and change variables accordingly. (Both of them)

I think that is exactly my problem!
On C: drive I have 596MB free and on D: 5,52GB free...

Unfortunately I have the "wonderful" ME...

If I remember correctly, in W9x and ME the temp variables are set in autoexec.bat which is in root of C: drive.

Open it to a notepad and write following lines to top of the file:
SET TMP=D:\Temp
SET TEMP=D:\Temp

Then save and exit, create a folder named "Temp" to your D: drive, which I assume is the one with 5 GB of free space. Then reboot.

Heya!
Just downloaded release 3.0 and tried the E-M War. Love your work, and that of SCP.
Excellent voice-acting in the missions. Nice to see someone combining two of the greatest things I know of; B5, and the best mission-based space-simulator, FS2.
Im really looking forward to future releases, hopefully some including the Vorlons/Shadows, which are easily the most interesting races.

Keep up the good work!

I DL'd the new version and i think its great!!!! good job guys.

I do seem to have 1 problem though.

All stations, ships, everything in game appears as one solid colour
either blue or red. It appears to be whatever colour the light source is in game.

ive tried turning on and off pretty much all the options in the launcher with no affect. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would really like to see what this mod looks like!!

I forget the actual format name, but to improve speed, FSO was altered to use an internal model format.  This unfortunately meant that all the models needed to be converted to the new format every time you loaded a mission, which took some time especially with hi-poly models.  Taylor created the ibx format which is a stored copy of this internal format which the game loads up, instead of having to convert each time.  The way to view and edit the models is to extract the pof files form the VP and use PCS, MODview, or Aurora.  If the models are changed and saved in the correct directory, the next time it is loaded, it'll make a new IBX file to correstond to the altered model.

Post by: karajorma on January 15, 2005, 05:22:52 am
The IBX format is only used internally by the game. The real ship format is the .pof format you'll find inside the vp files when you look at them with VPView or QVP.

The IBX format is generated by FS2 for use by the game itself. Originally the IBXs were generated on the fly but for high poly models this can take upto a couple of minutes. For this reason IBXs are now cached on the HD instead.

There's no editor for IBXs nor is their likely to be one for a while since editing a pof will cause the IBX to automatically update next time the game is run.

EDIT : Damnit. Didn't notice there was another page and TP had already answered :)

Here are my thoughts after playing the EMW campaign and some of the stand alone missions. FWIW I've seen Babylon 5 only a few times, and so I'm not really too familiar with the plot or characters. This might color some of my judgment.

Pro
Beautiful models and effects -- even the asteroids in one of the stand alone missions look good
I love the radar -- I'd like to see that art brought straight over into regular FS2
The 'dark' look feels right
Great music
Good sound
Atmosphere is outstanding -- the pilot/command art is great, especially coupled with the voice acting in EMW campaign.
Cinematic quality of the EMW campaign is good -- but see the con below.

Con
Cap ship thrusters seem to have 'shadows' running through them
Weapons feel as if they haven't much oomph. The Terran pulse cannons seem to have a tiny energy reservoir. The target profile of many of the enemy vessels is quite small. Despite racking up the usual 20+ kills in regular FS2 missions, I hardly hit anything in these missions.
In the EMW convoy escort mission, one of the freighters was disabled. The bad guys ignored the disabled freighter, which naturally sat there and did nothing. I got full credit at mission end for saving all of the ships anyway.
The later missions of the EMW campaign feel more as if the player is a spectator than a participant. There isn't really anything to do, one might as well just fly out of enemy range and watch. Although I understand the EMW was supposed to be hopeless for Earth, I just didn't feel as if there was much point to the missions. It would be nice to introduce elements to these missions in which the player can actually have some effect - e.g. prevent the Minbari from disabling some of the distant warships so that they might escape, etc...

Thank you for all the work, this is a great job overall! Its great to see what the community can do with this engine. I look forward to your forthcoming campaign.

The Earth Minbari War campaign is more of a demo campaign. To demonstrate what's achievable with TBP. I hope that the public will use what we have given them and come up with bigger better campaigns in the future.

imo, (only a minor gripe, mind you) the thrusters on the cap ships don't look all that spectacular, perhaps if you recessed the actual thrusters a tad, and put the glow in the bottom of that recess

Title: comments
Post by: Getter Robo G on January 16, 2005, 06:24:31 am
COmapred to the first one I felt a real diffrence in play (and boy it was harder!) lol or is it juist me? Anyway I finished it finally though it took all afternoon, and have a few comments.

Engine glows on cap ships really off (I noticed it's a scp thing...

For some reason I kept losing the targets visually in dogfights cause of teh enviroments maps (got lost in the background, can this be due to colorblindness?). It wasn't servere but it was more like annoying.

Is the ehite start bugged or do I need to turn an option off? I'm havign a problem like I did with a Taylor build before, when I looked at a ship a transparent texture from it would fill my screen totally! This time I see a profile of the whitestart from bottom to top onthe left side of my screen and the ship itself is invisible. I think it's something enabled in the build and so far only happens when I plugged the whitestar in a mission I made just o see what the new one looks like.
Jas anyone else found this affectign them similarly? Card is ati all-in-wonder radeon 7200 32mb tv in-out

I tried to open the vp file but it crashed vp view? Can we add content by making folders like usual so it overrides? I want to plug the old one in and see if it still happens.

Lastly, you guys did a great job of updating the campaign. The ships looks great, the effects are great, and I totally look forward to future add-ons.

L8tr!

I guess you need to figure out bitTorrent then.

I use Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) but unless you have the Java Runtime installed you'll probably not want to add the time it takes for that to download to the time it takes to get TBP.

BTW Full marks to the Azureus team for putting up the JRE which you need to run Azureus as a torrent file which if you're a first time BT user you'll need Azureus to get! :D Is it too much to include a link to Sun as well?

Either you are badly misinformed or you have really crappy cd's, or there's something wrong with your cd-burnings. All CD-R/RW discs today have 650-700 MB (75-80min) capacity, officially. Unofficially some may have even 750 MB (90-min).

Oh and by the way, you need to register before you can download any torrents.

Just install it to the same directory as you installed the base to.

    * To play campaigns, select "Campaign" menu where you will see all installed campaigns listed. Select the one you want to play and click "Select" button, then click "Continue" button.
    * To play single missions, select "Tech Data" menu, then select "Mission Simulator" and "Single Missions". You can also play campaign missions you have finished by selecting "Campaign Missions" instead of "Single Missions".

Data for EMW contains .vop files, in our case Campaign asks for .fs2 file. Where can I find it ?

Make sure you installed EMW to the same folder as the Base. There should be B5-C-sp-EMW01-missions-2_0.vp in the same folder as B5-Core-3_1.vp.

Now, the EMW campaign should appear in the campaign listing.

There is no need to select an .fs2 file seperately because the game will find it from .vp files.

OK, let's try one more time.

After installation, start the game and
1. Click Campaign
2. Click on a campaign name (Earth - Minbari War)
3. Click Select.
4. Click Continue.
The first mission of the campaign you selected loads up.

You won't see campaign missions in the tech room unless you have already played them via the continue option  or have added -allslev to your command line in the launcher.

This isn't a bug. It's a feature present from FS2 retail to prevent you from starting a new campaign and being able to play the missions in any order you wanted. :D

I've converted two missions  from the Earth Minbari War demo ("Screams from the Dark" and "Battle of the Line Part 2") into coop multiplayer missions. Both missions are for 4 players max and both were made by IceFire.

You can download them from HERE  (http://www.freespace.pl/hosted/psychoo/EMW_Multi.zip)

Have Fun! ;)

"t is not an issue with firing beams, we have already done that with Nials. The problem is that fs2_open does not support three primary weapons, it's as simple as that."
