My favorite is Joshua. The creepy keyboard thingy really freaks me out. I like use it often in Shivan encounter missions.
So... What is your favorite track, hmmm? ;7
-
Cinema. Superb, excellent piece, I especially love the violins.
-
Uhhh Crap! I forgot to post a poll. :hopping:
So, the choices:
Genesis
Exodus
Leviticus
Numbers
Deutrenomy
Joshua
Revelation
-
I don't have FS2 installed right now, so I don't know it's right name (Cinema is just a another name for that track; plays in the credits).
-
Credits/cinema.

I'm talking in-game music, people.

Hm... well, you have to be ingame to listen to the music(unless you downloaded them/used VPview), so I still say Cinema. :P
-
Definitely Revelation. Nothing like flying to fast-paced beats, dropping Shivans left and right. :D Second is Cinema, for obvious reasons. The music that plays during the final cutscene is also cool.

Scarily enough, this is the only track I would like to hear outside of the game, and for the same reason. :shaking:
Although, there is that one briefing track that's not bad. I don't know what the file is anymore. I'll look later.
-
FS2Cinema2.wav
Which, incidentally, is used as briefing music for the "Slaying Ravana", and so is ingame.
Then FS2_Btl_D01.wav, FS2_Btl_D02, and FS2_Btl_D03 (Numbers). FS2_Btl_FS2_Btl_E02 and FS2_Btl_E03 (Last two combat tracks of Exodus and the ambience track). And lastly FS2_Brief_05.wav.
Of the rest, I like most when properly used, but they don't qualify for "favorite" status.
-
FS2_brief_04.wav
-
Exodus...hands down. It was a great pick for the FS2 demo when it came out too...fits the FS2 story tightly.
-
ingame - numbers
briefings - brief 4. I can listen to that one for hours while FREDding.
-
Oooh, good one. I like Deuteronomy and Revelation probably the best out of the mission sound tracks, probably because they both pay a good bit of homage to FS1's music. Which, IMHO, was far superior.
EDIT: And part of the reason that FS1 music is so good is that it's so distinctive. Were you to ask someone who hadn't played either game since they were released but had played them before where the tracks came from, I think they'd pick out FS1's music pretty easily whereas FS2's is a little more generic sci-fi.
So good I can't really say which ones are best. Some that come to mind easily:- m1_nrml2
- m2_nrml1, m2_nrml2, m2_nrml3, m2_bttl1, m2_bttl2
- m3_bttl1
- m4_nrml3
- m5_nrml1 and m5_nrml2
- m6_nrml2, m6_bttl1
- m7_nrml2, m7_bttl2
- m8_nrml3
- m10_nrml1, m10_bttl1, m10_bttl2, m10_bttl3 (silent threat)
-
Hmmm... For Fs1 tracks I like the m8 and m9 battle music the best. You're definatley right about the FS1 music uniqueness, StratComm. The only reason I like the FS2 tracks better is because of the vastly improved quality. Otherwise, I'd probably like them equally.
-
FS1 felt better than FS2.
I love 'Out of the dark, into the night'
-
 I love the FS1 soundtrack. Especially Brief2, Title, m2_nrml3, m4_nrml3, m5_nrml3 and m8_nrml3 and Debrief01. FS1's music has an unique feel into it.
-
Depends on what kind of a mission it is.
Track G is good for capital ship combat. Tracks C, D, E, and F are good all around -- E especially when fighting Shivans, D for high-speed, and C for fighting Terrans or Zods.
I actually like Track B the least. It doesn't give me the feel that I'm in the fight, it gives me the "something big, important, and slightly creepy is going on without me" feeling.
But add FS1 music in there, and I gotta go with Monolith (Track 9) all the way. So fast paced.
-
FS2 Music (ingame):
1. Cinema - one of hte best around, for obvious reasons.
2. Exodus - best used in creepy missions against the Shivans. The sounds of beam cannons firing is a nice addition
3. Revelation - no explaination required
Fs2 Music (general)
The FS2 Intro. Although the FS1 intro had good music, the initial music, the transition to the fight and hte ambience afterwards as the speech rolled by in the FS2 Intro.......magnificent, to say the least. :)
FS1 Music (general)
Didn't listen to this very much as the port didn't include the music in-game...however, I loved the ones from ancients 1 and 5 hte best.
-
Ah, I forgot about Monolith for FS1; that was definitely the best. It wasn't used at all in the main campaign, but I think it was used to great effect in the last mission of Destiny of Peace. From the music that was used in-game, I'd have to say track 8 (I can't remember the name); that was especially memorable in The Great Hunt.
-
Arr, I forgot the Monolith as well, bloody great track there. But it was used at least twice in FS1 main campaign (I think at least in Failure to Communicate and of course, the last mission).

IIRC The last mission didn't have any music. :wtf:
-
Revelation 2 is my favouritely; particularly where it 'spikes' about 50 seconds in to a higher pitched, more urgent bit.

You're right, I just checked it. But I still love that humming sound the subspace makes. :o
-
Anyone else think Deuteronomy was good? It was a direct port of an old FS1 classic, and it was marvelous ingame.
-
Briefing Music: BRIEF7
Mission music pack: Revelation
Cutscene music: Supernova track

Can't say it was bad. I just better like Revelation.

Now, I know what music I should give to my future MG missions.
Something you are not going to find flaws in. :)

We all know. WE simply take the liberty of posting anything.
I think I am in a funny mood today

I'm not going to complain about any FS2 tune. I love them all :D

That's fine, but the whole point of me starting this thread was to determine which ingame music track was most liked by the community. I'm trying to figure out which tracks I should use more or less when fredding my campaign.
Is there any way to post a poll after you've already started the thread?

Post in the request thread.

Use the ones that go best with the mission and use a wide variety of tracks. If I want to listen to my favorite tracks I can always load them up in Winamp.

So far I have plans to use Genesis in small scale dogfights and escort missions, Exodus, Joshua, and Revelation in Shivan-Terran BOE missions (there are a lot of them), and Numbers to use in missions that don't fit any of the above. I am also using Inferno tracks, so I ended up cutting Deutrenomy and Leviticus. There aren't very many Terran v. Terran missions, and Hidden pretty much replaces Deutrenomy IMO. There is one or two terran vs. terran BOE's though. I'll probably throw in Definitive and Syphon during those missions. When all is said and done, there should be a pretty even dispersment of tracks among missions. There will be plenty of variety because I'll make sure each track is used at least twice. I'm simply interested on what tracks I should use a third time.
-
I don't like the statement that you're looking at using a lot of BOE's. They can be good for a climax if you do them properly, but their number should be kept very low in any campaign.
Oh, and by killing Deuteronomy, you're killing perhaps the best track in the entire game. It's the prototypical music of shivan encounters, and that wailing horn really is Freespace music more than any one trend.
EDIT:

For the record, the only mission to ship with FS1 that used that track was m-duel.fsm, the multi mission titled "Leviathan Duel". My guess is that the track was intended for the last mission, but the designers liked the ambience of no music better for the situation in the end. Powerful track, and a real shame it wasn't acually used in any missions. Silent threat uses it in a couple more places (maybe even one in the main campaign) but it's still relatively rare.
And for whoever said that FS1 tracks are lower quality must be on something. Their sample rate is lower and they are only mono, but the quality is top-notch. They are better-composed than the FS2 tracks, and the bit of scratchyness that is introduced just adds to the immersion IMHO.
-
I'm seriously considering swapping in some Freelancer music and not telling anybody when I release a campaign...

Thanks for clearing that up. :D I've just started to replay the FS1 main campaign, and didn't remember exactly where that track was used.

Which one is monolith? *curses Volition for encrypting the tables for FS1*

There are many BOE missions in the campaign, but there are also quite a few missions with no combat at all. Many missions start out as simple escort missions and after 7 minutes or so turn into full fledged BOE's. Dont worry, there will be plenty of balance, as I hope to fix or even redo most of the crap in the demo if I have time.
I figured I should cut Deutrenomy 'cause it's used in FS1 and FS2. I thought since it was used so much that people would want to hear something different. I guess I was wrong. :(

When I said lower quality I meant sound quality, not the composure itself. IMO if both game's tracks had the same sound quality, I would like them both equally.
So then, if I can't cut Deutrenomy then what should I cut?

This is a bit off-topic, but does anybody have any clue who did the voice acting for Admiral Wolf? The manual lists a bunch of people, but I obviously don't have any idea who could it be.
