Title: Attempting to get multiplayer to work... and screwing up badly
Post by: sheru on May 23, 2005, 03:27:42 am
hi, I'm back to try this again (had the feeling I'd come back to get things working... dying for some space flight multiplayer). Anyway, so I went looking around and tried to get things working. Before I tell you my problems, let me explain what I did first so you know what the situation is.

First, went here (http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=267).
Filled out the application for  FS2NET, downloaded all these nefty new programs, and tried to run it on the new fs2.exe that was offered. seemed to work at firs twith the lsited launcher, untill I start noticing as I'm creating a new pilot (and here comes the bug and what's bothering me at first), and I notice that the top 1/3 of my screen, everything that is text is gone. just the background image. I think, okay weird, maybe i need a new version or something. Note that at this time i hadn't attempted to join or host a game yet.

So I download this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,32771.0.html)
thinking that maybe just having the old version doesn't work with the launcher. I place it in my directory, and try to run it. It gives me an error (something about a video card) and makes me download a file launcher5.rar. okay, fine I think. I run the launcher 5 with fs_open_r.exe. Same error and new bugs. The mouse moves very slow, the top 1/3 now curves into these black images. All in all, not good.

So I came here. Now as i started writing the first part, I thought I'd give running the game a shot just to see if it works or not (the in game, not the menu's). Well, let's just say that was fun. Half the ship had huge bars in them that made them invisible. A black line kept moving up and down my screen, and the game crashed to desktop when I finally died from random fire. All in all it was not fun. I also noted that the text for validating the FS2net stuff was not int he image box, it was actually alittle to the bottom left and had a rather odd spikey looking font to it.

And so I come to you all now asking, what the hell did I do wrong?

Thanks for your time.
Sheru

if you need more information, let me know.

What happens if you just try to run your old version of FS2?

The problem seems to have first appeared with Tom's Old Build which should be pretty much bug free.

I had a similar problem, happened to be my video drivers. Updated those and it fixed it.

When I run the old version of FS2.exe things run pretty smooth. I can't watch any of the AVI, but everything else is fine. Smooth sound, gameplay, graphics at medium/high range, no strang invisible ships, and no crashs.

I'm sorry to double post like this, but I'm really curious if someone can help me out with this. Are there any fixed bugs similar to this that I could try those fixs to see if they will run or maybe suggest a new build or anything?

What version of your video drivers are you running with?

Well before I even bother posting, I took the time to update my drivers. Evendently some new ones came out last month for the card so that did fix the strange box, invisible thing.... but new problem

Any text I enter manually (server name, chat, etc) is either black or invisible (I can't tell which) and also, my mouse scrolls really really slow in game. beyond that, things are actually working. Game didn't even crash when i died.

I've seen slow mouse scrolling before. Is it just slow enough to be annoying or is it slow enough to actually make the game unplayable?

As for the server list being black, that's a new one on me.

slow enough to be really annoying, but it doesn't actually affect the game play of flying around so I guess I'll deal with it. The server list has no games listed but that's not the problem. Just the text I can type in is all dark/unseen. I know my text is being entered because the server I put up was listed on FS2NET game list with the name i punched in, just I couldn't see what I was typing and I doubt I could see what others type in chat. Also I checked while playing around, my HUD in game sometimes shows up in black and white (I checked my color scheme and everything is supposed to be a nice blue)

Sounds like an FSO bug that needs reporting. Try a newer build from the SCP recent builds forum and if that still has the problem you should give the details (or a link to this thread) there.

I installed everithing exactly the way i should. On FS2NET i see games in the list with active ones, but once I'm ingame it says that the are no active games. Any ideas what might be the problem?

edit: sry about that. I found the problem, everything is working ok now

Not a problem actually. When i tested it first there was only one game in the "active games" list, but i couldn't see it when i logged in the lobby. When 2 other ppl made games i could see theirs, so I'm guessing it was a firewall or other network config problem, preventing the first game from beying displayed, but it sure isn't on my side of the line:) Sry if this is kinda messed up, i'm not a native english speaker:)

P.S. C ya online;)
