The time has come!  Announcing the official start to the Summer 2005 HLP FRED Contest.  The contest will run from July 1 to August 1 and will be judged by no less than the Great FREDding Triumvirate*: Blaise Russel, karajorma, and me.  And there will be prizes. :)

*It would have been a quadrumvirate but Sesquipedalian is still finishing up his thesis and can't make it.

Here are the rules.


Categories and Prizes

• From the previous thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,33446.0.html) on the subject, we've decided to have three categories of missions: one for retail without mods, one for SCP without mods, and one for "anything goes".  This third category will encompass everything else: FS1 with and without mods and FS2 and SCP with mods.
  
• Prizes will be awarded for the winning mission in each category.  The winner will get the item of his choice from the HLP Store (http://www.cafepress.com/freespace,freespace2,vasudan,hlp,ntf,holight,gtvi) as well as a custom title and special avatar.
  
• We reserve the right to shuffle the categories or create more or fewer categories depending on the number of entries.  For example, if we get a lot of SCP missions but few retail or "anything goes" missions, we may change the contest to have a first, second, and third place winner overall.  If this happens, we'll announce a new set of prizes suitable for this arrangment.

Contest Timeframe and Submission Guidelines

• All missions must be submitted by 11:59 PM GMT on August 1, 2005.  (This means you have August 1 to work on it but you must submit it before the end of the day.)
• Send completed missions to [email protected].  Include a readme with the author's name, the category in which you're submitting, and any other information that would help us to understand the mission or the story behind it.
  
• If your mission uses a "complete" mod pack, such as Inferno or the Freespace Port, you must specify the mod and include a link if it's not hosted by HLP.  If you've cut-and-pasted mods from various sources (to create your own ships.tbl, for example) you must include all files necessary to run the mission.
• You can submit multiple missions in any or every category, as long as they all meet the rule requirements.
• The mission must be substantially your own work - i.e. you must be the principal FREDder.  (It's okay if you got tips from someone else.  It's not okay if the entire mission consists of tips.)
• The exception to the above is backgrounds.  I hate making backgrounds, and a lot of other people do too, so if you copy a background from another mission (:v: or otherwise) we won't hold it against you. :) See the links at the bottom of the post.
• Any mission of yours can be submitted provided that it has not been previously released to the public.  This means that if you've been working on your own campaign since forever, and you manage to finish it before the deadline, you can submit all the missions in it. :)
  
• If your mission uses mods or SCP features, they must be publically available.  No fair creating missions with secret mods or coding in your own special feature.  It is okay to use a feature that nobody else knows about because they've never really explored SCP FRED. ;)
  
• The exception to the above is tables.  Tables are about the easiest thing to modify, so feel free to edit table values if you think you need to.

Judging

• Blaise Russel, karajorma, and Goober5000 will judge the missions.  None of the judges may submit missions in this contest.
• Judging will commence immediately after the contest deadline and conclude as soon as is reasonably possible.
• When the judging is complete, the judges will publicly release all the missions along with their scores and announce the winner.  Prizes will be awarded once you make your selection and provide us your address.
• The contest is being sponsored by the admins and the judges, but donations are accepted. ;)

Judging Criteria

• The criteria will be largely the same as those used in the reviews on the VolitionWatch Archives (http://archives.volitionwatch.com).  Study those reviews (both the good and the bad) to get an idea of the kinds of missions we're looking for.
  
• A detailed description of the review criteria is available here (http://archives.volitionwatch.com/fs2/review/stars.php3).  Here's a quick overview:[list=1]
  
• Storyline - whether your mission makes a good story.  There should be a decent backstory developed appropriately in the command briefing and the briefing, with extra information available in the readme if needed.  The story should also play out reasonably well over the course of the mission.  The player should feel immersed in the mission and have a vested interest in playing his part in the story.
  
• Balance - how well your mission is balanced, how it plays out, what craft are available, etc.  This doesn't mean you must be able to "win" the mission (e.g. when the Sathanas nukes the Psamtik), just that you must be able to do what you have to do with what you have available (both fighters and warships).  It shouldn't be either stupidly easy or frustratingly difficult.
  
• Design - how well the mission is conceptualized and put together, how effectively you make use of FRED's features, and how technically competent you are in FREDding.  This category also covers polish: how "finished" the mission is and how well it has been checked over and beta tested.  (I will severely reduce the score of anyone who does not spell check or grammar check their mission. :p) Extra points will be awarded here for particularly clever uses or abuses of FRED.  Points will be taken away for bugs and violations of the FRED design rules discussed in the articles below.
  
• Gameplay - how fun the mission is and how much we like playing it.  New, fresh approaches to accomplishing objectives would be really cool, but if you make a run-of-the-mill mission and do a really good job at it then that's just as good.  Extra points will be awarded for clever responses to player behavior, such as a capture objective if you find some stolen cargo.

I would point out that the subspace tunnel must have significantly enlarged since FS1 if anything the article says on the subject is true, as I have seen missions that easily jam in several capital craft.

Or they completely forgot about using the Z axis...

I think that falls under the "getting tips" guideline, so that's fine.

Notice I said that the mission must not have been previously released publicly.  There's nothing that says you can't release it privately - e.g. for testing or evaluation purposes. ;)

So, how are people doing?  Who's working on missions?  (And who isn't working on a mission but said in the other thread that they would? :p)

I am working on two missions atm, although I'm having trouble with an annoying bug that halts the central part of one mission. So the second mission is incase that bug doesn't get fixed in time.

Er, the rules say that you CAN get someone to help you with it. You just have to do most of the FREDding.

And you can probably also release it privately to a person or two to help out with grammar and playtesting.

What Axem and karajorma said.  Nowhere in the rules does it say you can't get outside help.  In fact I specifically allowed this by saying, "It's okay if you got tips from someone else. It's not okay if the entire mission consists of tips."

I spent a great deal of time on the rules to make sure they were as fair as possible.

Well, my missions is at about 80% complete. It's getting a little BoE-ish, so I'll have to change some ships near the end I think. Because even I don't know what the hell is going on and I made the dang mission! :P

Hope I don't run out of SexPs. And playtesting's such a Son of a ***** when you have 5 minutes of dialogue before the action starts, erg. If I do up a second mission for the contest, it'll be on slightly different lines  I think.

Ship placement, basic scripting, and arrival cues are done.  I'll do a preliminary balance check later on this evening.  After that, it's onto dialogue, briefings, and finalized scripting.  I'd say another two days to beta, followed by a week of me getting ever more fed up with the mission, as I root out the bugs.  I probably won't have time to make a second submission, unless the first one is exceptionally easy to debug.

Though somewhat off-topic, I'm wondering if HLP has any plans in the works to set up a replacement for the now-derelict Volition Watch mission archive.  It would be nice to have a centralized place to submit missions again, and the staff and member reviews were always quite valuable when it came to revising campaigns and stand-alone missions.

No use. OGL isn't supported very well by my on-board card, hence not allowing FRED to start up at all....

Doesnt matter now though, I'm on duty. I bet I can at least get he framework done in retail though, but beta-testing will be a ***** till I can get a new card on the 25th or 26th (when my mom's coming over)

I should have a mission to submit within the next couple of days. I think it's more/less balanced and bug free (maybe :).  I just have to do up a nebula background and it should be good to go.

I fredded a FS1-mission ages ago. :doubt: Don't know if I can dig it up in time (possibly not).
Won't have time to make anything larger for at least 1 1/2 months.:( :( :(

No, I started on another mission for the contest incase the bug didn't get fixed in time. When it got fixed, the backup one was further along, so I'll keep with it.

Can I submit mine a bit late? Lack of a graphics card means I can't run FRED2 Open at all. Although I am making a mission in FRED2, it's only the bare skeletons of what I wish to do with it, not to mention the sexp limit is somewhat......restrictive.

I'm not asking for much of an extension....to maybe around Aug. 10 perhaps?

They don't have to extend it. It being their contest, they can do whatever they like to it, whether or not people compete isn't their problem. In the case of a reasonable exception, the rules might be bent. In the case of laziness, they most likely won't.

How many mission can one send?

Coause I have two really great missions and I'm having trouble to decide which to send..


Allso, if I may suggest to the judges not to be too strict as far as spelling mistakes go. Many of the FREDers are not native enlgish speakers and will thus have to spend more time going trough and correcting all the briefings, debriefings and in-mission talk, and that can ammount to a lot of stuff to correct.

The rules state you can send in a whole campaign if you wanted to. As for spelling mistakes, that's what a spell checker is for. I'm not sure if ESL members will get some leniency in grammar and spelling, they can always ask fellow members of the community to help them out as well.

The problem sometimes can be hardware related.....my earlier rig couldn't support FS2open, or FRED2 very well either. I only got my new rig working on the 29th, and then I had to re-install all my applications, leaving me only half of sunday (the remaining half was spent out) to actually get to any serious FREDding effort.

At the current rate of work and what-not, hte earliest I can submit an original mission would be the 7th or 9th at the least.....but I've already submitted a sub-par entry, so at least I got some bases covered :/

After the contest is over, I believe they will be making available all of the missions for download along with comments and ratings on each mission (and of course, who won).

No, that just means the judges are able to give each mission the due time it deserves to fully test it and flush out any bugs :o

If you want to get a handle on it try picking a released stand alone mission and then writing a VWA style review for it. You might be surprised at how long that takes you.

From what I've understood the reviews themselves will be made public so everyone who contributed can see what the judges liked and disliked about their missions.

There won't just be a first prize and rasberries for the rest of you though so I'm pretty sure there will be runners up. They might get nothing other than the satisfaction of knowing they were the second best but that's not a bad thing either :)

For me? Two-to-two point five hours playing time/FRED examination, fifteen to forty-five minutes for the review. If I want to be super-extra-thorough.

My english teacher once asked her class how much time we thought she should send on each essay we turned in. The consensus was 'the same amount of time we put into writing it'. So taking an estimate of 3 hours per student, time the 30 kids, the problem became apparent. Its a lot easier to make an entery for a contest than it is to judge all of them.

Wrong. it more time consuming to make a mission than to judge it. But whenb one person has to judge several missions that does consume time.

I submitted 5 missions and spent a week working on them. Testing, changing, writing, tesing... again and again.

If I were to judeg 5 missions it wouldn't take me half as long.
but if I were to judge 30..that's a different issue. But I still wager I could do it fast. Then again, I have time to spare.

I've been very busy this week (I'd say unfortunately but I'm pretty happy about what's been keeping me busy :D ) so I've not had a chance to finish reviewing the 3 or so missions I have left. I'm aiming to get them done this next week as I should be somewhat more free. Then it will be up to Goober and Blaise to decide what they're doing :)

At the moment it's seriously looking like my decision is the first, last and only opinion when it comes to judging the competition which isn't exactly something I feel comfortable with as I know I'm rather particular in what I like in a campaign (for instance I was never a huge fan of Derelict even though almost everyone else seems to love it).

I had meant to finish up before the end of the year but I should be able to finish soon.

Hm... I THINk I put 07, 07R, 09 and 01 in there.

07 lasts 30 seconds and it's a intro to 07r so that's not really a problem.
09...oh yeah, that's the fall of hte Delacroix mission..hehe
01.. that must be the first assigment mission (or was that 01T).. dammit, I need ot work on my mission labeling.

It depends. The contest is being judged by individual missions, not as a whole campaign. If it worked this way, I would have sent in Rogue Episode I and waited to see how that turned out.

In my experience, it was always faster to play a mission than to make a mission.  In fact, it's faster by a few orders of magnitude, so the next time you want to run one of these contests, I won't gripe about you taking over a year to judge the thing, but I demand the work period be extended to a decade.

Just started reading this. How long is it going to judge this thing? So far, its been two and a half years!!!!! NTM the fact that the grand prizes are worth under $20. A sacrifice, yes, but not a great one. Amazing.

No, it describes ME.  For those exact reasons. :p Take a look at the ST:R development for example.
