Title: Official FRED Contest Announcement
Post by: Goober5000 on July 01, 2005, 12:28:40 pm
The time has come!  Announcing the official start to the Summer 2005 HLP FRED Contest.  The contest will run from July 1 to August 1 and will be judged by no less than the Great FREDding Triumvirate*: Blaise Russel, karajorma, and me.  And there will be prizes. :)

*It would have been a quadrumvirate but Sesquipedalian is still finishing up his thesis and can't make it.

Here are the rules.

Categories and PrizesContest Timeframe and Submission GuidelinesJudgingJudging Criteria[/list]

Here are some articles you may want to consult as you create your missions.
Another good reference is the FS2  Reference Guide (http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/fs2/refguide/fs2refguide.chm).  Singh's Background Emporium (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,32341.0.html) and Milliways (http://www.penguinbomb.com/lightspeed/) are good places to go for backgrounds.

Whew, that was a long post. :D If you have any questions or comments, post them here.  If we need to update the rules, we'll edit this post and update the thread accordingly.

Good luck! :)

If someone outside the US wins, who covers shipping? Cafepress is a bloody rip for shipping internationally - often doubles the cost of the item.

The sponsors will pay for everything, including shipping.

I would point out that the subspace tunnel must have significantly enlarged since FS1 if anything the article says on the subject is true, as I have seen missions that easily jam in several capital craft.

Or they completely forgot about using the Z axis...

If you're going to allow other user-created backgrounds, you should probably link to this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,32341.0.html) thread as well.

Would be okay to give someone the mission to help you playtest or do we have to keep it ultra-top-secret?

I think that falls under the "getting tips" guideline, so that's fine.

Notice I said that the mission must not have been previously released publicly.  There's nothing that says you can't release it privately - e.g. for testing or evaluation purposes. ;)

Wait a second, I have to give my address? As in my street address? I'm way too paranoid to do that!

I only need my address if I want the prizes, right?

Yep. :)

Although if you submit a suitably bad mission I may ask for addresses so that I can go round and "eductate" you Jay and Silent Bob style ;)

Kara, if you were to fly here from London just to 'educate' me, I'd give you my address. :p But as I see it, you'd have to pay way too much to torture me for my horrible missions.

They look pretty good, Raa; not great, but revise it a few more times and you might have something really cool. :)

So, how are people doing?  Who's working on missions?  (And who isn't working on a mission but said in the other thread that they would? :p)

Do the prizes meet with everyone's approval?

I am working on two missions atm, although I'm having trouble with an annoying bug that halts the central part of one mission. So the second mission is incase that bug doesn't get fixed in time.

*reads requirements and realizes he can't win because his grammar is flawless and getting outside help is prohibited*

So, this contest is innately unfair. As I suspected. :doubt:

Er, the rules say that you CAN get someone to help you with it. You just have to do most of the FREDding.

And you can probably also release it privately to a person or two to help out with grammar and playtesting.
Title: Official FRED Contest Announcement
Post by: karajorma on July 12, 2005, 11:51:20 am
I'm certainly not going to complain at anyone who gets outside help with their grammar. As long as you aren't getting someone to ghost write your dialog it's okay with me.

What Axem and karajorma said.  Nowhere in the rules does it say you can't get outside help.  In fact I specifically allowed this by saying, "It's okay if you got tips from someone else. It's not okay if the entire mission consists of tips."

I spent a great deal of time on the rules to make sure they were as fair as possible.

[EDIT] can we do something like a 2-mission campaign?
Title: Official FRED Contest Announcement

Since you can submit multiple missions I don't see why not, though I imagine each would be judged on their own merits rather than as a whole.
Title: Official FRED Contest Announcement
Post by: Akalabeth Angel on July 15, 2005, 12:31:47 am
Well, my missions is at about 80% complete. It's getting a little BoE-ish, so I'll have to change some ships near the end I think. Because even I don't know what the hell is going on and I made the dang mission! :P

Hope I don't run out of SexPs. And playtesting's such a Son of a ***** when you have 5 minutes of dialogue before the action starts, erg. If I do up a second mission for the contest, it'll be on slightly different lines  I think.

Ship placement, basic scripting, and arrival cues are done.  I'll do a preliminary balance check later on this evening.  After that, it's onto dialogue, briefings, and finalized scripting.  I'd say another two days to beta, followed by a week of me getting ever more fed up with the mission, as I root out the bugs.  I probably won't have time to make a second submission, unless the first one is exceptionally easy to debug.

Though somewhat off-topic, I'm wondering if HLP has any plans in the works to set up a replacement for the now-derelict Volition Watch mission archive.  It would be nice to have a centralized place to submit missions again, and the staff and member reviews were always quite valuable when it came to revising campaigns and stand-alone missions.

No use. OGL isn't supported very well by my on-board card, hence not allowing FRED to start up at all....

Doesnt matter now though, I'm on duty. I bet I can at least get he framework done in retail though, but beta-testing will be a ***** till I can get a new card on the 25th or 26th (when my mom's coming over)

Don't you have some retail action?

I should have a mission to submit within the next couple of days. I think it's more/less balanced and bug free (maybe :).  I just have to do up a nebula background and it should be good to go.

How many entries have been submitted so far? Or is that a secret? ;7

Can I submit mine a bit late? Lack of a graphics card means I can't run FRED2 Open at all. Although I am making a mission in FRED2, it's only the bare skeletons of what I wish to do with it, not to mention the sexp limit is somewhat......restrictive.

I'm not asking for much of an extension....to maybe around Aug. 10 perhaps?
Title: Official FRED Contest Announcement

Well I'm aiming to have all my judging done during the first week of August, as I'll be on vacation the rest of the month.

Unless the contest is extended through August (talk to karajorma and Blaise Russel about it) the original deadline stands.
Title: Official FRED Contest Announcement
Post by: TopAce on July 26, 2005, 07:24:08 am
If the number of submissions don't increase by August 1, you have no choice but to extend the deadline. In my opinion.

They don't have to extend it. It being their contest, they can do whatever they like to it, whether or not people compete isn't their problem. In the case of a reasonable exception, the rules might be bent. In the case of laziness, they most likely won't.

How many mission can one send?

Coause I have two really great missions and I'm having trouble to decide which to send..

Allso, if I may suggest to the judges not to be too strict as far as spelling mistakes go. Many of the FREDers are not native enlgish speakers and will thus have to spend more time going trough and correcting all the briefings, debriefings and in-mission talk, and that can ammount to a lot of stuff to correct.
Title: Official FRED Contest Announcement
Post by: Nuclear1 on July 26, 2005, 07:32:44 pm
You can send as many as you wish, IIRC, so long as it's within reason. Hence:

Not that I would actually do this, or anything. :nervous:

In addition: If you want me to go through the missions really quick and correct grammar and/or spelling, you can send 'em on over to me. I probably won't enter anything anyway, so your secret is safe with me. ;)
Title: Official FRED Contest Announcement
Post by: Akalabeth Angel on July 26, 2005, 07:33:06 pm
The rules state you can send in a whole campaign if you wanted to. As for spelling mistakes, that's what a spell checker is for. I'm not sure if ESL members will get some leniency in grammar and spelling, they can always ask fellow members of the community to help them out as well.

As soon as I check them out a bit more...

The heat here is incredible..and I don't have air conditioning in my room. Bathing in the sea helps only for a short while.

I can't think, I can work - I don't even tun on my Pc untill later in the day when the heat wears off a bit!!!

Gah.. I have barely managed to put these 5 missions in a respecateble shape. That's enough - I'm sending them in as tehy are.

And I thought I was starting late a week into July.  Why the hell did everyone decide to start two days before the deadline?  FRED is a hobby, unlike a lab report, so why the procrastination?

The problem sometimes can be hardware related.....my earlier rig couldn't support FS2open, or FRED2 very well either. I only got my new rig working on the 29th, and then I had to re-install all my applications, leaving me only half of sunday (the remaining half was spent out) to actually get to any serious FREDding effort.

At the current rate of work and what-not, hte earliest I can submit an original mission would be the 7th or 9th at the least.....but I've already submitted a sub-par entry, so at least I got some bases covered :/

After the contest is over, I believe they will be making available all of the missions for download along with comments and ratings on each mission (and of course, who won).

I can understand the procrastination, being a hardcore procrastinator myself. But this time around I just got it over and done with right away. Doing missions takes more time than I'd like, so I didn't want to leave it to the end and run out of time.

If the contest period was too short, then the judging period, by nature, also ought to be short, because there would be fewer missions submitted. :ha:

I don't think you realise the amount of work required to judge.

If you want to get a handle on it try picking a released stand alone mission and then writing a VWA style review for it. You might be surprised at how long that takes you.

@Akalabeth. I'll make sure I bump the topic when we're done.

From what I've understood the reviews themselves will be made public so everyone who contributed can see what the judges liked and disliked about their missions.

There won't just be a first prize and rasberries for the rest of you though so I'm pretty sure there will be runners up. They might get nothing other than the satisfaction of knowing they were the second best but that's not a bad thing either :)

Indeed.  And the September 1st deadline might have been prematurely optimistic... considering I'll be finishing a degree and getting a job in the next too months, I may have to stretch this out a bit. :nervous:

For me? Two-to-two point five hours playing time/FRED examination, fifteen to forty-five minutes for the review. If I want to be super-extra-thorough.

Times the number of submissions...

My english teacher once asked her class how much time we thought she should send on each essay we turned in. The consensus was 'the same amount of time we put into writing it'. So taking an estimate of 3 hours per student, time the 30 kids, the problem became apparent. Its a lot easier to make an entery for a contest than it is to judge all of them.

Wrong. it more time consuming to make a mission than to judge it. But whenb one person has to judge several missions that does consume time.

I submitted 5 missions and spent a week working on them. Testing, changing, writing, tesing... again and again.

If I were to judeg 5 missions it wouldn't take me half as long.
but if I were to judge 30..that's a different issue. But I still wager I could do it fast. Then again, I have time to spare.

Well I've got three more missions to review. IIRC. I'll try to make a big push and get as much done as possible since I won't be around much next week.

Karajorma's pretty much running the show in there. :) I'll see if I can review a mission tonight.  I'm long overdue... :nervous:

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, several FREDers entered a contest...and they waited...and waited...and they died...

I've been very busy this week (I'd say unfortunately but I'm pretty happy about what's been keeping me busy :D ) so I've not had a chance to finish reviewing the 3 or so missions I have left. I'm aiming to get them done this next week as I should be somewhat more free. Then it will be up to Goober and Blaise to decide what they're doing :)

Well, with one-third of the judging panel having gone missing, yes, that would do it.

Sorry guys, but their real life problems are of higher priority than our FRED Contest.

At the moment it's seriously looking like my decision is the first, last and only opinion when it comes to judging the competition which isn't exactly something I feel comfortable with as I know I'm rather particular in what I like in a campaign (for instance I was never a huge fan of Derelict even though almost everyone else seems to love it).

I had meant to finish up before the end of the year but I should be able to finish soon.

Oh noes... :(

All right, I'm going to see if I can get them finished next weekend (not the one coming up).  Karajorma, I'll need you to hold me to that. :p

Been busy myself. Get to work.

Trashman you could help us a lot if you'd actually pick a damn mission rather than facing me with the prospect of playing five to find out which one I should review.

If you guys are really that short-handed, I wouldn't mind reviewing one or two myself if it helps. :)

Problem isn't one or two. Problem is that it's only fair if you do them all. Besides IIRC your entry is in anyway so you'd have a slight bias there :)

It is? Goober informed me that it got in too late. :nervous:

Well, nevermind about then. Best of luck, and hope someone gets around to help. :)

I've been busy.  I already have a bunch of notes written up; I just need time to do the rest and write stuff up. :)

Nuclear1: I know I said that, but considering how close it was, that it was a mistake in good faith, and how long this has taken, we might make an exception. :)

And TrashMan: You could speed this up by picking a single mission. :p

I always thought it was a little odd that a person could submit their as-of-yet unpublished campaign :) What if someone sent in the equivelant of Derelict.

Eh...can't find the zip with the mission.Must have deleted it.

Hm... I THINk I put 07, 07R, 09 and 01 in there.

07 lasts 30 seconds and it's a intro to 07r so that's not really a problem.
09...oh yeah, that's the fall of hte Delacroix mission..hehe
01.. that must be the first assigment mission (or was that 01T).. dammit, I need ot work on my mission labeling.

Crap, which one to chose...

You know, there wasn't a mission limit but you're imposing it now since you're lazy  :p
Crap!!!! I can't decide.

just pick one yourself!

If I pick one it will be at random. I don't really have time to play them all.

Then they'd win...probably.

It depends. The contest is being judged by individual missions, not as a whole campaign. If it worked this way, I would have sent in Rogue Episode I and waited to see how that turned out.

The irony is that now I have them tested and bug-free, as I got a tester.

Seesh, couldn't belive the number of bugs...not that I'll win anyway.

I think 09 is the least bug-infested..

In my experience, it was always faster to play a mission than to make a mission.  In fact, it's faster by a few orders of magnitude, so the next time you want to run one of these contests, I won't gripe about you taking over a year to judge the thing, but I demand the work period be extended to a decade.

Just started reading this. How long is it going to judge this thing? So far, its been two and a half years!!!!! NTM the fact that the grand prizes are worth under $20. A sacrifice, yes, but not a great one. Amazing.

Good concept. Bad execution.

Oh yeah,

Good concept + Bad execution = Bad FRED Mission  :)

Roffle. This thread pretty much sums up the entire HLP operation. Very profound. Two years to play a couple missions.  Things get done here...just very, very slowly.

No, it describes ME.  For those exact reasons. :p Take a look at the ST:R development for example.

I'm closing this thread until I finish the missions.  Won't be long, hopefully.
