Title: Use Mantis to report bugs!
Post by: Inquisitor on August 26, 2005, 07:27:58 am
Report all bugs on Mantis (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/).

Read this article (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html) on how to submit bugs.  It will save both you and us a substantial amount of grief.  Also read Karajorma's thoughts (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=51801.0).

Read and follow the following guidelines:

If you must browse without registering, please use these credentials:

Username: SCPGuest
Password: password

However, note that you will not be able to report bugs as a guest.  To be fully involved, please take the time to register.  We do not allow anonymous bug reporting: the reason we require registration is so that we can keep in touch with our bug reporters.  Again, bug reporting is not fire-and-forget.  We will usually need to ask you to do something to help us fix the bug.

Help us help FreeSpace. You guys are as important to this process as any of the developers.

Also if something isn't working, try installing the newest build and media vp set first before you post anything.  This way you don't need to post about a problem you're having with version 3.6

Something new about Mantis and AOL:
It seems that only some messages don't come through...
But those messages that actually make it throug take days to arrive...

Some other things:

Post which mission you are running if your problem only occurs in a specific mission.  This will help us isolate the problem and try to simulate it in a test mission.

If you're not a coder, please don't tell us which part of the code you think caused the bug.  Sometimes we may listen to it and be sent on a wild goose chase.

Sometimes it may be helpful to figure out when a bug was present.  If possible, try it in retail if your bug doesn't require new SEXPs.  An archive of old exes can be found here: http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/latest/.  However, the feature you may be using may be newer than some builds there, so start moving back in 2 week increments and start narrowing it down if possible.

Feature requests in Mantis will be closed.  Please spam the forums :)

Choose a category that best suits your problem:
HT&L: should not be used.
DirectX: graphics bugs that appear only in DX
OpenGL: graphics bugs that appear only in OpenGL
graphics: graphics bugs that appear regardless of API
FRED: non-graphical related FRED problems.
FRED grahpics: graphical related FRED problems.  This should only be used when there are rendering problems, user interface errors should go under "FRED"
gameplay: Any general bug that occurs while in mission.  Usually AI or balance problems.
user interface: non-graphics related bugs for the UI screens out of mission - barracks, pilot files, tech room, lab, breifing, etc.

You know, we could use a severity category between minor and major, something like medium. I've often found that some bugs I report are more than minor but aren't quite major. :p

I suppose you know it, but just in case... Mantis (http://lore.maxgaming.net/~scp/mantis) is down. I get a "404 Not Found" browser error.

I've been using the link at the top of the page

Posting on the real site now.  >.<

:p

That it reads on the HLP Mantis mainpage "Note: If you're looking for the Source Code Project Mantis, it is located here: http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/" and that the only public project at the moment is that of Inferno didn't sound any alarms? :) Updated the SCP Mantis link just a moment ago but anyway...
Title: Mantis is dead!

Already for several days I can't use mantis, because lore.maxgaming.net says that there is no /~scp/mantis/ on this server.
If I visit roor directory of the server then the following appears

The fact that you are seeing this page indicates that the website you just visited is either experiencing problems, or is undergoing routine maintenance.

What's going on?

Take a look at the link Fury's posted.

Bet you feel a little silly now :p

The website for Mantis changed a few days back.

Strangely though, it actually does seem to have some problems. At least I can't log in using my existing account, had to set up a new one (under a new name, so old still exists - got an error trying to set up with my normal username) to peruse the bugs.

[Edit] Oh yeah, I forgot to ask if a mantis admin could reset my PW and have it mail me a new one so I can use my real account again. It'd be nice :)

Yeah, it is odd... at first I thought I just remembered the PW wrong, but then I checked my devilishly-hidden-super-secret-piece-of-unimportant-passwords-holding-paper on the back on my screen to make sure, and it checked out.

[Edit] Thanks for the quick action, can access it again now :)

What do you do if you create an account but never get the password?
Shoot, that stinks.  I've got 2 suggestions for you (follow step #2 1st):
1. Pick another email account of yours - at a different email domain. Add the following two email addresses to your sender safe-list / address book:
2. Try to register *sigh* another account, using the different email address that you used in step 1.
You can change your email address to your prefered email address once you acquire your password and log in.

I hope this helps!

Odd, I've been using it all week, and it's still coming up for me now.  Strange that you would have such a prolonged problem with just one site, and that I haven't the same experience.

Well I don't have any addresses filtered out or have spam filtering enabled.  I just use Thunderbird to mark spam messages and mass delete them after I look at them.  Unless my ISP is blocking them for some reason they should come through.   Heck I got the one for this site today.

Tried the new registration with my 165thBDHR email this time and same thing.  No email and that account doesn't even receive more than a message or 2 a week so it wouldn't be hard to spot.

Quite odd indeed.  Looks like I can't even access the main scp.indiegames.us site, or even ping it.  It was working fine last week, and I've now tested it on multiple browsers and multiple machines (in my house, so same ISP... wonder if they're doing something strange like blocking it?)

Fubar, are both those email addresses you tried on the same ISP?
Title: Re: Use Mantis to report bugs!
Post by: FUBAR-BDHR on September 28, 2006, 12:35:19 am
Yes they are.  I double checked and spam filtering is disabled on my both of my domains.  Unless the server has old DNS info (moved to new server on Monday) I should be getting them.  Never had a problem getting email from any other site.  Oh and before you ask no I don't have any other email accounts.

Backslash, does the ip that is pinged come up as 207.44.172.79?  That's what my ping does.  If you run a trace-route, which hop times out?

Fubar, do you run the mail test at http://www.dnsreport.com/ to make sure all is good with your mail server(s)?  If all else fails, you could use a temp email address from a service like mailinator.com, then change the email address on your profile once you've logged in.

Good luck both!

Well here's the dnsreport results:

Quote
Step 1:  Try connecting to the following mailserver:
         fubar.org. - 209.240.24.56

Step 2:  If still unsuccessful, queue the E-mail for later delivery.

Trying to connect to all mailservers:

   fubar.org. - 209.240.24.56  [Successful connect: Got a good response [250 Accepted]] (took 3.0 seconds)

Also I forgot I have 2 sbcglobal.net emails I have never used.  My domains aren't on SBC so I tried registering with one of them and didn't get that email either.   So now I have 3 accounts waiting to be activated.

Interesting.  What are the from and return-path email addresses in that message?  What was the sending server's ip address?  Maybe mantis is using a different setup, and should be using the same..

Fubar, I think that you found the critical difference here!

It seems that the SCP forum email that you did receive had a return-path of [email protected], while the SCP mantis email that you did not receive had a return-path of [email protected].

To admins: if you can change the return-path for the mantis on SCP, that may solve the validation woes.  Thanks!
Also, I found some other potential problems after checking the headers of a validation email.  Some of these may require fixes on behalf of indiegames.us's customer mail system.

Ok this might sound like a crazy question but what bugs do I report using Mantis?  Do I need to be running a certain version?  If the bug exists and a new release canidate is out and I find a related bug do I report the bug there or directly to the person working on it?  I mean with all the bulds, release canidates, and dot canidates it's all kind of confusing.   Or maybe it's just the beer.  Heck I crashed 3 standalones (one 4 times) as well as my computer several times just trying to play one game.

Well I found the answer to part of my question.  Didn't see the bugnote area when I was browsing before.

Report any that you find (but please search first to make sure that the same bug doesn't already exist as open/closed/resolved).  As far as builds go, if you are running an old build then try a newer build before filing the bug just to make sure that we haven't already fixed it (not all fixed bugs are in Mantis).  Other than that just make sure that you list which build you are having the problem with when you file the bug.

Luck, sort of... in that I got it to work at a friend's house in the same town but I suspect he's on a different ISP, and it still wouldn't work for me yesterday.
And suddenly it works for me again now.  Weird.  After over a week of not.  I'd guess it's my ISP doing something odd with DNS stuff this week, but who knows.  Ah well, the important thing is I'm back in :)

It comes and goes for me too btw.  The funny thing is that sometimes I can get to Mantis, but not the general SCP site, which is on the same server with the same address.  :wtf:

Oh, and I stopped getting Mantis e-mails when it moved to the SCP site.  They don't get spam filtered, so they must be getting bounced/rejected instead.  I changed my account prefs to use a game-warden.com e-mail (in part so that I could actually diagnose a problem if there was one) and it works fine there.  But, the GW server isn't set to bounce/reject all spam like that yet either.  When I eventually set that up it's likely that the Mantis e-mails will also stop coming there as well unless I whitelist it server-wide.

Hmm, well for now I use category "multiplayer" for both in-game multi and standalone issues.

I think that [1] and [2] are the reasons that my ISP is rejecting the mails.  Like you say though, that's something that has to be fixed on the sending server's side.  It's something that just needs to be fixed since those things make the e-mails qualify is false/rogue rather than a valid e-mail.  Any mail server which requires a valid sender (which means reachable host, valid name lookup, MX entry) before accepting the message will just end up rejecting all such mail.  If someone were to look at the maillog on the server then I'm sure that it would have more than a few reject messages in the mail server traffic.

But [1] and [2] can be easily fixed just by a quick mail server setting change.  It needs to advertise it's mails as coming from mail.mgtgames.com, and not the private server name of mgonet.mgtgames.com.

Any possibility of getting a standalone catagory added to the catagory list on Mantis?  I started reporting some of the bugs I know of and they really don't fall under any of the other catagories.

Yeah, just file it under multiplayer, since that is the appropriate category for standalone server bugs.

Erm I've got a bit of a problem...

With FRED 3.6.9, sometimes it fails to save correctly, usually changing ship's friendly/hostile flags... I've noticed this a few times...

It's a bug but it's not being reported... and it has no error log in the program... it thinks its correct, but random ships are sometimes set as the wrong friendly/hostile flags... average 1 per save on a mission myself and Mobius are working on.

Okay... Now, that Mantis seems to be down temporarily and I really don't know, if it's a bug or not, I'm just asking here:

In the newest HEAD-CVS-Version, ships are braking WAY too fast. Capships leaving subspace are almost instantly at zero speed (normally, they glide at least a bit) and even fighters are braking too fast when I reduce speed to zero...
So... Is this "normal" or a bug (maybe connected to the semi-newton-physics?)

EDIT: Oh... And BTW: I don't see Engine glows anymore... There's just nothing... No cones, no glows, nothing...

If you've created a shortcut to run the game check the properties. It should start in the same folder you have FS2 in. If that entry is blank then that's the source of your problem.

i can't register Mantis, and got the error message when trying to create new account:

PROBLEMS SENDING MAIL TO: [email protected]
Mailer Error: Could not instantiate mail function.

Does anyone know the workaround of this error?

We had just fixed that, GAH.

Apparently mail is suspended until they can sort out some spam related issues. Someone with admin access will have to activate your account manually.

I keep getting:

APPLICATION ERROR #800

That username is already being used. Please go back and select another one.

So far as I know, I have never successfully created a Mantis login.

Same handle as here.

I tried to register to Mantis to report a bug, but Mantis has eaten 3 mail addresses  of mine, no confirmation received.
Any suggestions?

Yes, i did, no registration email there.   :(

I running out of email accounts... ;)

Here is the bug report ( should Karajorma already taken care of it, ignore the post ).

FRED is crashing ( no error message ) as soon i try to replace a Viper MkII with a MkVII via the ship editor.
This happens with following builds:

C05252008CAM: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,54045.0.html

Is-Player-build: that's the filename, can't find the thread anymore ( there was a testmission for TBP in the archive )

OrderPriorities: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,53978.0.html

20080328trunk: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,54110.0.html

I use the builds with Beyond the red line ( patch one and two ).

Yeah I know what caused this and I think I've got it fixed now. I'll upload my changes to SVN and get you a build to test it with.

Anyone else think we need 3.6.10 as an option in the build selection?

Seconded.

Only shipping versions show up in the list.  3.6.10 doesn't exist yet, and probably won't for a while yet, so there really isn't any point in marking it as shipped in order to make it show up.  I suppose we could add "trunk" or something, but that isn't any more useful to us than you simply marking it as 3.6.9 like you have been.

Does ~+U crashing FS2 count as a bug?

What's that supposed to do? Unless it's the crash mod key, probably. :p

Yes, what does that do?  It sounds like a cheat code but I can't find any documentation of that one, without digging through the code it seems.

:bump:

for great justice

I would also like to know, I've heard it mentioned elsewhere but I don't remember what it does, if anything.

Code: [Select]
// launch asteroid
... and it looks to do just that: throw an asteroid out from the players position.

Sweet, undocumented cheats ftw.  That's cooler than most of the documented stuff.

Like the poster above I've entered details to register a Mantis account, but I simply haven't received the confirmation email.

I've checked in my junk settings, GMail account is what I use.

New email problem.  The last few report updates I've received have the standard Mantis {FSSCP xxxxxxx] header but do not have a message body with the update info.

I'm experiencing this as well, but it's with the same bug, one with a particularly long note history.  Could it throw up and lose the entire body of the message if it's too big maybe?

Either way, it's probably due to the fact that our Mantis version is pretty old and it's likely they've fixed these issues in newer versions.  I can't blame anyone for not wanting to risk breaking it to update it though.

It does pose rather big problems for those of us who want to contribute more to the coding of the FS2_Open engine, yet can't register Mantis accounts (beyond using the guest one) to propose & submits patches to bugs.

Looks that way.  I take it you were talking about the 0 speed bug.  The emails I received today from other reprots are just fine.

/me tries to recall the time when he tried signing up for a Mantis account...

Six months? I can't remember. Didn't bother because I was half-expecting to receive nothing and watch as the planet rotate slowly on its diurnal course.

Whenever I try to create a new account I never receive a confirmation email. It appears as though a lot of people have this problem.

Sorry about that, there're issues relating to the server that nobody has managed to work out yet.
Unfortunately this makes it very difficult for everyone.
Best bet is to PM Goober5000 to get an account.

For anyone who has had troubles in the past, Mantis emails should be working now.
