1. How may hours are in the Vasudan Standard Clock?
In a few missions events take place around 32:00 hours Vasudan Standard, so how many hours long is the clock?
2. Has anybody made a Vasudan font yet? I've been thinking of making one based on the signs at the top and bottom of the Vasudan Bomber picture included in the extras (Image included), but I can't find any good font creator programs.
3. A while ago I saw a link to a collection of names for Freespace ships, Demonic names for Shivans, Egyptian names for Vasudans, and a list for Terrans (Can't remember what kind of names it used).
Does anybody have a link to it?

1) I don't know right off the bat. It may be in the Species section in the Tech Room, though it's been ages since I looked in there.
2) No, but it would be pretty cool.
3) Are you thinking of www.pantheon.org? This may not be it, but if you're looking for GE's name generator, I can't remember where it is either.
4) Welcome to HLPBB. :D

I can't recall anyone ever perposing Vasudan ship Name Plates, now that I think about it. (which is sorta relevant :nervous: )
-
I did.. alltough only if we had a proper font for them...
-
1: I don't think this is officially known. That 32:00 in sm2-07 is the only reference at all to Vasudan time.
2: The HOL logo and a few command briefings have some Vasudan letters on them, but I haven't seen any actual font. Where did you get that picture, by the way? I haven't seen it before and the textures on that Sekhmet look really good.
3: I don't remember the urls now but I have a few text files with all the names copied out of there.
-

The Picture (along with some others) is in the Extras Folder on Disc 3 of FS 2
-
I don't remember seeing any extras folder on mine, but I have to check. Is it only in the GOTY edition or something?
The only extras folder I have is on the FS1 Silent Threat CD, with the funny movies in it.
-
That sounds about right. I managed to salvage that folder before my Disc Three went kerplooey on me.
-
I never realized the Sekhmet was a two-seater. Though those textures are just higher-res versions of the stock ones, without all of the green glowy blobs.
-
Must be the GOTY edition, as I have no extras folder.

Actually, the largest amount of time refered to is 3320 hours. At a minimum, we can assume it's 34 hours, but that's Vasudan hours so what it comes out to in our time could be, well, anything. Of course, if you want to make it easier, just say 34 and let it stand as that.
-
You also have to realize that a day is the time it takes the Earth to fully rotate on its axis once. However, it would differ for every single planet.
Time would be meaningless.

Yeah good point. But seeing how our cultures are similar, we probably have a pritty close time system. They may have added a few extra hours in there for art or something.
And the picture. I swear iv seen that before. A while ago but still. And i think a few others like that one. You sure you have never seen it?
-
wow, a REAL Vasudan font! :jaw: I've been looking for something like that FOREVER.
The Scroll of Atankharzim is currently using one I've cobbled together from scraps of text, but it works better as a Scrpit font. What you've got there would be best for a standard typeface.
I've done Freespace Fonts before (try running a search) and I'd love to do this now that I have a source file. Thanks Shiku!! :yes2::nod:
-
you know, that Vasudan bomber looks like a shivan nahema bomber (not exactly, but VERY close)....
-
It's - just - a sekhmet. Without the blobular glows. Of course, the Sekhmet's tech description implies that it's a Vasudan copy of a Shivan bomber anyway.
-
I have no extras folder either. Shiku, do you think you can post the entire contents of this extras folder here? I would really like to see the other things in there. Any new canon FS material is an amazing find these days.

Yeah, it's probably based off the Nahema actually. The Sekhmet is supposed to be Shivan design that was modified by the HOL for Vasudan use.
[Though those textures are just higher-res versions of the stock ones
That's why they look so good. :)
I so wish we had high resolution textures for the FS2-only ships like we do for the FS1 ships.
-
I personally think the reason it looks so good has more to do with it not looking like a Vasudan Christmas tree, but you're right. The huge maps in FS1's vps are wonderful things.
-
The green bits don't look all that bad to me, although the color is probably out of place for a Vasudan model.
I think the reason FS1 has them and FS2 does not may actually have to do with the fact that FS2 has no software rendering mode. I played FS1 recently and it seems that it only ever uses the large textures in software mode, even with the registry hack. I thought software mode actually looked way better than D3D and played the whole game in that; apart from the textures, you also got free glowmaps on everything and it generally ran pretty smoothly. Glide gives you glowmaps but not the large textures.

Thanks for all the answers guys, and I hope you do go ahead and make a font Galemp!
I have the GOTY Edition, so I guess the Extra are only there.
The folder containes:
Music- All the Music Files that are Downloadable from the Freespace 2 Website (http://www.freespace2.com/downloads.cfm#freespace2music)
Sounds- Outakes from voice recording sessions

:jaw:
I almost had an orgasm on seeing the maps on that Artemis. Oh, :v:, why have you denied us your high-res maps!
-
Fantastic images! I'm sure those will be put to good use by the community.
What are the MTS files? And are the TGAs hi-res maps?
-
I'm not exactly sure what the TGA Files are, but If you like I could E-Mail them to you (seeing as I have no-where to host them)
-
Dude! Why did we never hear of this before now? :eek2: Any and every extra piece of information on Freespace is welcomed here. :)
How many outtakes are in the sounds folder? Could you upload those as well (say, in a zip)?
EDIT: If you need hosting, this guy (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=2010) (PM him) can hook you up with whatever you need. Might as well just toss the entire contents of the Extras folder on the web. :) And any extra goodies on the CDs too, in case the Extras folder is not the only extra folder there. ;)
-
Send me one. (I'll PM you an e-mail address.) If they're just orthos they'd be next to useless, but if they are high res maps, well, the Freespace gods have been laughing at us for a while.
-
There are 10 Sound clips, plus the Vasudantalk clip.
How do I go about uploading a Ziped file here?
EDIT 1: After a quick look through the Files in the MTS Folder, I realized that there aren't files for every ship, only the few listed below
Aeolus
Argo
Artemis
Bakha
Bes
Charybdis
Colossus
Demios
Erinyes
Ganymede
Gun Platform
Hatsheput
Hecate
Hippocrates
Hygeia
Mara
Mentu
Mjolnir
Myrmidon
Nephtys
Perseus
Sekhmet
Serapis
Setekh
Sobek
Zephyrus

TGA is a graphics format; the SCP supports them.
I know that someone here has a file upload service where we can all share it. It's crucial that we get that stuff as soon as possible; as far as I know nobody's seen this before.
Someone set this guy up!
-
Shiku, you might have missed my edit...

Thank you for Re-posting the edit, I did miss it, but I have since PMed him and I hope I can get some hosting set up quickly.
-
Please do go ahead and send me one of the tga files (it doesn't matter which one, though a fighter would be preferable) as I want to know what they are. If they're orthos, then they'll be good references but there's not the urgency. If they're maps, well, we'll need to pull a couple of people off of their pet projects. ;)
-
I'm looking forward to seeing this in the morning. Out of curiosity, how many TGA files are there, approximately?
-
Don't get your hopes up. There're orthos using game textures. I don't know what an MTS file is though, but it's not big enough to be a map.
They're good references, but the fact that the high-res artemis texture is lost forever makes me sad :(
-
Very interesting. Those Artemis textures look pretty badass, as do the ones on the Nahema. I've seen that first image before somewhere, or something a lot like it, but can't remember where. Perhaps it's on the box.
Some of the stuff is a little weird though. "Devestator" class bomber? :wtf: :D And what's with the chinese looking text in the Artemis?
It would be very good to see the rest of this stuff anyway though.
-
I'll be damned...I never even noticed before, but my copy (Interplay 20th Anniversary edition) has that exact same folder. Nice find :)
-
Holy ****! I need that Artemis texture for the HTL Artemis!
-
More outtakes than the standard "Try saying that five times fast", "Stop laughing there, copilot!", and "You had your fun?"?
-
As far as I can discover, it appears that .mts files are some kind of compressed 3D geometry file.
http://www.okino.com/conv/exp_vet.htm
Theres some information in here, it may possibly be that these contain compressed FS2 models and textures, but I really couldn't say for certain.
-
They're still FAR too small to contain high-res textures of any kind. The one for the Artemis specifically was only 22k.

Yeah; there's actually a few additional ones in there:
-One of the same voice as the "He's my brother" outtake that's called "freak.wav"; the guy makes some strange "wu-eh-uh!" sound :p
-One entitled "god speed.wav" with Snipes' voice saying, "This is Allied Command, signing off! God speed, pilots!"
-One of a female pilot's voice saying, "I'm reading an unknown jump signature, configuration unknown!"
-One called "big visual.wav" of a creepy male voice saying, "I've got a visual on something BIG!" :p
-One called "To restart the module...wav" with a male voice saying, "To restart the module, select the replay button, the re- *laughs*"
-One called "gibber.exe" with what seems to be Cordova's voice saying, "You--you want it Knossos...right? I didn't say that--I didn't say that--I--right---I di-" Sounds like he had a bad case of the stutters :p
Besides those, there's also the standard empty message, message start and end, and Vasudan voice loop. The outtakes are definitely some good stuff, though :)
-
The MTS files are probably those that create the Metastream images on the old Freespace 2 site:
Ship Gallery (http://www.freespace2.com/gallery.cfm)
-
Cordova sounds like he's on the toilet in all his messages.
-
That's supposed to be an authorative English accent, but yes, you're right, most of the time he sounds more constipated than commanding.
-
So how about uploading the outtakes?
And don't you just love how Lt. Samsa got promoted to captain of the Colossus?
-
I don't have the out-takes alas, Cordova sounds like that in-game as well ;) Hopefully someone with GOTY will upload that shortly.
As for Lt Samsa, well, I guess it saves on voice-actors fees ;)
-
"You did... not *plomp* have authorization to return *plomp* to BASE, PILOT *ploooooooooooooomp* Your actions jeapordized to those involved in thIS MISSION *ploomp* AND THE GTVA'S OBJECTIVES IN THIS THEATRE!!!! *ploooooooooooooooooooooooooooomp*" --Cordova
-
One called "gibber.exe" with what seems to be Cordova's voice saying, "You--you want it Knossos...right? I didn't say that--I didn't say that--I--right---I di-"
Now this I have to hear. :D Cordova is hilarious. :D
-
Cordova needs to head over to K-Mart for some underpants.
-
Hmm.. the artemeis piecture has some sort of chineese or japaneese on it...
-
So what's the news on uploading the extras?
-
I should be able to temporarily upload the outtakes, at least. I'll have to see how big the rest of the files are and which ones were already available elsewhere.
Edit: All right. As Shiku said on the first page, there are five subfolders in the Extras folder: Artstuff, Desktops, MTS Models, Music, and Sounds. The music tracks are just the high-bitrate FS2 battle track MP3s that have been around for a while, and the desktops are the three that have been available from Descent-Network, so those are taken care of. Shiku already posted all 9 of the art pictures. The sound folder comes out to around 700KB when zipped; I've uploaded it here (http://home.comcast.net/~andrewduk/FS2Outtakes.zip).
The MTS Models folder is another story; it's around 70MB unzipped, and I was able to get it to around a 34MB RAR. However, I don't have enough webspace to host it. Unless Shiku can manage to upload it, the only way I'll be able to get it to anyone is by uploading it to an FTP, sending it by IM, or by splitting it up a few ships at a time.

Vasudan monospace lettering font (http://web.njit.edu/~pjo3/vasletter.ttf)
Vasudan script font (http://web.njit.edu/~pjo3/vasudan.ttf)
Let's see if anyone notices. :drevil:

*notices*
*goes to put nameplate polys on Vasudan ships*
Any reason both links are the same though?

Oops :nervous:

I wonder how that text would look on my grant proposal.......

I first found that extras folder four or five years ago, but it never occurred to me that people here had never seen it.

/me likes the script font...

Neato. And these are taken directly from the :v: image?
Now we just have to figure out what to do about those numerals. :D
-
/me sees a new AFD joke for next year

That'd be pretty miserable, actually. You might as well close the forums for a week. Oh, wait... :nervous:
-
/me intends to learn the vasudan characters and learn to recognize them
/me also wishes IRC commands worked on this forum...
-
/me has already tried the same thing about 5 times today ;)

For the most part. There are a few characters shared from the Script font.
Now we just have to figure out what to do about those numerals. :D [/B]
Meh. :o
Believe it or not the script font isn't actually that hard to learn. I intentionally tried to make the individual characters look like their Terran counterparts.
I'm thinking of making the Vasudan text variable width instead, for better nameplating. Thoughts?
-
Yes. Though I'm still not clear on how Vasudans would nameplate their ships, I'm excited about the prospect of being able to try it. Variable width would be most excellent :)

Actually, I spent some time once doodling up some Vasudan numerals, with justifications on why they looked the way they did. I can scan them if you'd like.I intentionally tried to make the individual characters look like their Terran counterparts.
Yeah, I noticed. That might be considered cheating. :p
-
Based on the text Galemp's already made, I think the best way to go about Vasudan numerals would be the dot/line system, where you've got each digit represented by a sequence or pattern of simple symbols. It'd be really cool to let Vasudans use a different base (How many fingers do Vasudans have? Because their number system would probably be based on that) and to design the numbers accordingly. However, random symbols for the numbers is probably not the best idea if you want to use them for that.
-
/me still thinks that there shouldn't be nameplates on vasudan vessels, though. He thinks that that's a distinctively Terran idea. Symbols would work fine, or individual letters representing words, like asian characters, but not nameplates in a terran sense.
-
What, pretell, happened to the Vasudan script font? It's not working for me any longer. Just a blank true tyupe file font.
A shame, really.
And also, these letters look too much like the western standard letters :p
-
Me likes

EDIT from the future: fix the font screwing up the rest of the page's posts -- Goober5000

Imagine seeing @#$% in big bold letters on a destroyer nameplate. :D
-
I know, you have to install the font first :p
But in all seriousness, how are we supposed to tell the difference between the '3' in the script and the 'm'? They are different characters, but not even as different as 'm' and 'M' in Ariel.
-
Soooo... how does one go about using a font like that on this board anyway?
-
Install it. Under XP it's as easy as dropping it in WINDOWS\Fonts.
-
I've done that already... but I'm clueless as to how to type it on the forums.
-
Quote one of the posts.

Thank you!
Finally a Vasudan font!
Thank you so Much Galemp! When the Headz hunt begins, you shall be spared above the rest!

this is getting ridiculous. cursed laptop

Ah. Fixed.

You need an appropriate desktop theme to go with that.

I'm quite pleased to say that, aside from the numbers, i can read the text, and it's only been about two hours.
BTW; why is 3 and m the same character? >..< And 4 and n are too similar. :p
-
They are actually not the exact same character. One of them has a little square corner on the left-hand side :p
But they are FAR too similar.
EDIT: So who's in favor of incorporating this into the swear filter?

That's the fifth time I've done this in the past two days.

Vasudan Variable Width (http://web.njit.edu/~pjo3/vasvarwid.ttf)
Highly recommended for all operating systems and nameplates.
