Definately one of the most original starts I've seen for a mission.

La la la la la, flying around with that Vasudan Corvette. No way you're gonna lose this mission, cause no bomber's gonna get through the Corvette AND you. Suddenly "Massive jump point forming!" Ravana blasts the corvette with it's LReds and leaves you stunned as it jumps out. That scared the crap outta me.

Derelict had a bunch of those wonderfull "OH, **** " moments, one of the most memorable was when the Narlathotep transmited that Shivan signal and the other shivans jumped in. and then there was the mission were that knossos jumped in, at first thought I thought something had gone nova.

The moment when the Shivans first appeared in mission in FS1. I had completely forgotten about them (and the intro) so it seemed a major surprise (to me).
And the moment I managed to play FS2 Demo at a respectiable screen rate (my computer initially had set it to 32-bit colour and 1024*756 (or whatever the resolution was). Then I realised I just had to buy the game.

You know, the coolest thing I remember was when I first blew up an enemy and saw it explode! Simple yes, but it was my first Freespace game. After that I was hooked with it. I was just so blown away by how much "umpf" it had when the enemies blew up. It didn't look like any normal 2D round sprite spitting a few flames. It was REAL Hollywood style. Aaaaaaah. My "wow" moments would have to be the following:
Command's message in sm3-10 (Apocalypse) - "Capella has gone supernova! Repeat, Capella has gone supernova!..." : completely unexpected turn of events there; while flying to the node I was really thinking hard about how the GTVA would respond to this. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) (didn't know that the game ended there)
Snipes' message (of course) in loop2-2 (Into the Lion's Den) - "Dive! Dive! Dive! Hit your burners, pilot!" : I had my headphones cranked up to full volume and this completely startled me - enough to make me jump out of my chair for a second (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) -, after which my Mara got smacked ten thousand meters away. I thought I was the only one who did that! I must have spent a half hour flying around that thing. I even parked my ship in one of the alcoves and pondered using it to 'camp' during a mission. I was impressed by the size of the Colossus--for a little while. The Sathanas spoiled that for me, though.
One of the moments that seriously got to me was when the tips of the Sathanas' legs just came inching out of the mist like something out of a nightmare.

The one that scared the most crap out of me is (bear with me, I may have gotten my missions confused) when you are taking out the gas miners, "Uh, command, we are detecting another knossos", Sathanis comes out, blasts the crap out of the little sobek. That is scarrrrry to see the beams just coming out of the nebula. The first *bzzt* of the BFREDs I accidentally launched some of my missiles (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Oh yeah, I forgot one other part. When the Capella node was going nova, I was still in the heat of the battle. Trying to save as many civilians as possible. With all the flak around me bursting, wingmen screaming to their deaths, I only just managed to hear the message to get back to the node. So when I saw the timer, I just turned to the node, put all powers in the burners and went for it. Dodging some freighters i said "Godspeed." Not actually knowing what ill fate was awaiting them, I just knew that I had to get to the node FAST! I was really beggining to scream at the screen, edging it futher "GO! GO! GO! YOU F$#@¤& PIECE OF S&%¤#!!" Finally I JUST and just reached the node as the timer ticked its last, even seeing my fighter begin to burn up a bit as I jumped. Thankfully I survived, and literarely screamed out in joy!" (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) Aaaah, those were the days. I just love this game...

I just took a perseus for that mission my third time around. I made it to the node with time to spare.

- Seeing FS1 for the first time on the laptop of some random guy who gave me his copy. I thought "Whoa, games can have graphics this good!" (I was living under a rock, gaming-wise.)
- In "A Failure to Communicate" I burned at top speed, shot off one PXV, and it blew up Deva 1 as we flew by each other at near 350m/s, with me screaming "YEEEEEHAAH!" (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

- Seeing the Lucifer in Playing Judas. That mission scared me to death the first time I played it.
- Seeing the Colossus for the first time.
- The first deployment of the Meson Bomb (Knossos go boom, everything within 3km erased) and the fact that it did nothing (Renenet runs away from Sathanas #1)

I nearly died when I heard that voice screaming 'Dive dive dive! Hit your burners pilot!' I had the volume up way high (I like to feel it when I get rocked by flack or rolled by beams (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)) and I wasn't ready for that.

What really makes me say Oh coooooool.....
When the Colossus is firing its beams at the Sathanas in High Noon. Listening to Command yell more firepower! And listening and watching the Colossus's beams just power up and fire at the Sathanas.
I loved that sound.

Heh, that was pretty cool I guess... but for me, an anti-climax. I'd taken down all of the front beam cannon on the Sathanas down in the previous mission, so I just had to sit there. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Heh, the first time I said "Oh cool" in FS2 was after I installed my 16meg agp video card where I could see everything perfectly.
Before that I had a 4meg S3 Virge. I had to run with EVERYTHING turned to minimum or off.
And then there was problems with rendering engine glows and nebulas, simply didn't work.
Every light source was surrounded by a black box that you couldn't see through. Nebulas were the same way.
Then I installed the new card and boom! F*ing clarity. I could finally see further than 10 feet inside nebulas!
What's really, REALLY sad?
In the SOC missions where you had to defend the cruiser from the pegasus fighters? The hull never dropped below 80%.
After I upgraded I couldn't keep her higher than 15%.

Yeah same here. And what really got me was that in a later mission they said that the Colosus was damaged by the Ravana! I was like "WHAT?! It was at a 100% when I finished that mission." But then I decided that pushing the beam turrets over their limits must have cause some kind of damage. Oh well.

Woah people thought my in-mission cutscenes were GOOD? They took quite long to debug, quite surprising how much effort a mission needs even when you're just sitting there.

Yeah it was fun making that beam strike you, to kind of end the episode with a blast.
