Title: Oh dear, poor Jack
Post by: aldo_14 on October 13, 2006, 05:55:40 pm
Back to everyone's favourite internet whipping boy - Mr Jack Thompson

Anyways, said ambulance chasing nutter tried to get an injunction on the game Bully in Florida.  Bully is already amusingly notorious for being the most controversial game that no-ones ever played, on the basis of 2 screenshots and the title.  Actual previews (http://spong.com/feature/10109413?cc=t)reveal the game to be positively anti bullying, and the critics to be self serving twats.

Now, the judge in Florida played the game (this is a story in itself - Thompson claimed he'd won some victory in 'forcing' this, when in actuality Take 2 offered to show the game to the judge), and decided it was not a danger - http://videogames.destructoid.com/jack-thompson-ruling.htm.  Jack Thompson, amusingly, went bonkers mental; http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/jack-thompson/thompson-verbally-attacks-judge-207578.php - even more amusingly, he manages to outright lie about the BBCs' 'finding' of the game as violent.

Ah dear.  IT's like shooting fish in a barrel, really :D

If he's not careful, he might get himself barred and end up damaging the video-game world far worse than he ever could have whilst still holding the anti-videogame banner; someone a lot more competent could take up the torch.

But of necromancy, but things are getting funnier...

Yup, he's up on contempt for talking about what happened under a gagging order.

Ironic part is, a few days after the complaint was made, Jack 'amazingly' decided to announce he was going to run for Judge for that very court incredibly early. Then started accusing the Judge of having a conflict of interest (because he would be Thompsons' opponent) and should recuse himself from the case.

Now, I don't know about the US, but in the UK there's such a thing as 'outstanding business', i.e. all motions made are dealt with by date, the complaint came before the decision to run for judge, therefore, the complaint takes precedence. Not sure how things run there though.

The thing is what Jack did (A cynical manouver in order to change the judge) won't sit very well with whoever does take his place. Jack's basically made it a virtual certainty that whoever tries his contempt case is going to be somewhat hostile to him.

That's probably deliberate though so that he can claim bias when he gets sent down for this.

Well, ended up tha the judge DID recuse himself, but only because he'd put a complaint to the Florida Bar because Jack had written him letters comparing him to the 'Weapons Inspectors in Iran being led round and shown where the WMD's weren't' and for spending the entire hearing trying to hold up a placard with something written on it....

He's like a firework, all loud noises and bright colours, but all that's left next morning is some charred cardboard and a stick :)

There's something oddly familiar about that turn of phrase, the uquestioning head-up-bottom self-rightuousness that DEMANDS COMPLIANCE _INFERIOR MORTALS_!....

Better still, he's writing to shops throughout Florida that because Bully allows you to kiss another boy if you so choose, that it contains pornographic content.

He's completely lost it.

I think he also doesn't understand games in general. He's just looking for a hot button issue.
